The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

They're really not my style. I listened to New Bermuda and it had a couple moments that I dug, and my friend wanted to see them, so we stuck around. I have to say that they were extremely disappointing live (as far as showmanship). Sure, the vocalist was a madman, but the rest of the band might as well have been mannequins. I've seen more movement from the band at Chuck E Cheese.

Come on man. Metal fans I know like innovation, but don't just buy into nameless "hype". We also have the tendency to be skeptical of buzzwords and other empty statements. Deafheaven aren't really doing anything interesting to some of us. If you find it as such, that's great, but don't try to be pretentious about it.

That's kind of a hyperbolic response for an incredibly plain statement of "i went to this show because i like tribulation" where an opinion of any sort on deafhaven was barely even expressed. I know they do get a lot of shit, and if you like them and read about metal online a lot, you're definitely sick of it by now, and being frustrated is reasonable, but damn, a statement of "you're a stupid child for not liking this thing" is overkill in response to the way that opinion was phrased..

on that note, I should listen to new bermuda while working today. I still haven't given it a shot and BM is such great productivity music.

Fuck that. I saw the same show in Atlanta, and Tribulation are for sure the better band. I was interested to see Deafheaven and I think New Bermuda is a pretty solid album, but it just came off as boring live. I get that they are unfairly hated on by the metal community, but there is some truth to the hate. It's not just because pitchfork likes them.

Bear in mind I did not at any point mean everyone should bow down to Deafheaven or anything like that. It merely pisses me off that everytime I see them mentioned in impressions people ALWAYS (without fail) have to add an addendum saying they weren't there to see them or some such thing. Why do people care so much? I'm not saying anyone is a stupid child for disliking them (hell, I don't even like them THAT much), I'm merely saying this inherent need the average headbanger has to immediately distance him/herself from them every time they're mentioned is at least somewhat childish. This whole shared-subconscious perceived need for a rep or kudos within the community drives me crazy. Deafheaven and Liturgy are probably the funniest examples... the lengths people go to to make sure others don't think they even remotely enjoy these "hipster metal" type bands just reeks of desperation.

As for them not doing anything interesting, I highly disagree. Again, I'm not that big a fan of theirs, but I admire them (along with Alcest) tremendously as a beacon of ambition. There's no shortage of great albums coming out these days, but the vast majority of them are highly derivative and as such I will always be a huge supporter of anyone who's exploring new soundscapes and pulling it off with a defined and matured sonic identity. When I see the adoration Djent (which manages to not only be the most creatively bankrupt sub genre ever but also the most disappointing in that nothing so far has even gotten close to matching or rivaling the quality of Meshuggah's output) gets in contrast to Blackgaze, it just hurts a little as a huge lover of extreme music to see such narrow mindedness preventing the scene from growing out of this sheltered little comfort zone it's cornered itself into.

As for them not being good live, and I'm sure I'll get alot of hate for this, is anyone really? I was a very active concert goer from about '97 until late 2011 and quite honestly I've never seen anyone that really blew me away, ever. Metal just does not translate well to a live stage, imo... and do bear in mind I've seen a ton of great bands in their prime (like Death in '98, Gojira in '06, Opeth in '01, Mastodon in '05, Meshuggah in '03, Nevermore in '06, Isis in '05, etc etc etc etc) so I'm not just saying this out of spite.
I love the atmosphere and the crowd (which is why I still go to the occasional black metal or hardcore concert every now and then to trip or vent, respectivelly), but there was only 1 single time where the live show was superior to just listening to the studio stuff with a good pair of headphones (Negură Bunget, OM tour). Compared to hip hop, progressive electronic (Tangerine Dream are a highlight) or minimalist stuff like Nils Frahm which not only sound incredible but reach their true potential when doing a live performance, metal in general is something I mostly just gave up on when it comes to live shows... I no longer see the point, to be fair. It will forever be my favorite subgenre of music and it'll always hold a special place in my heart as it was the gateway drug that led me to further musical exploration, but I don't really think anyone is that good live, to be honest. Too much gets lost in the cacophony.

All that said, I apologize if I came on a bit strong... but this is gaf. I tend to hold gaf to a higher standard and then this kind of stuff happens... sorry!

Haha, what a bunch of pissy, pretentious rubbish. So someone doesn't like a band you like and prefers another band instead. Somehow that's OK when it's a presently trending band, but how dare they be so "narrow-minded" when it's the opposite? He didn't even shit on the band, he just said he preferred the other, yet you write this insane rant?

What's even more infantile about the metal community is this bizarre notion that if you don't like specific bands (usually the artsy and "original" hipster favourites), you're somehow narrow-minded and an elitist meanie and a "problem" of the metal community. Complete nonsense.

Read above. Also, I do think it's a problem in the sense that there seems to be an active need to poopoo such bands just out of spite... it's a bit of a toxic environment, imo.

I've been meaning to write about this album for a while, but Running Wild's Death or Glory is absolutely amazing. It's definitely one of the only albums I've heard that uses the Pirate theme and makes it sound so genuine, full of energy, and really has an air of authenticity to the experience. Favorite songs off the album?

On another note, my school is improving due to starting ADHD therapy and getting the help I needed. Thanks Metal, I wouldn't be here without you!

That band took the Pirate theme and ran it into the ground, they are a fun band regardless. Dancing on a Minefield is one of my favorite 2 Minutes to Midnight riff like songs (not off the album mentioned of course)

My favorite track off the one you mentioned is Running Blood

"Death or Glory" never really stuck with me. "Blazon Stone" is one fine album, though; particularly the title track. Man, that's some catchy deutches metal.

When I think of a good live band, I think of one that has a lot of energy and moves around. If I just wanted to hear the band play great technically, I could sit at home and listen to the CD. That being said, a band that can play great live and also has great energy and movement will always be the best combination.

Of recent years, I'd say that Sabaton put on one of the best live performances I've seen.

I released a tech death album a year ago, and to commemorate its anniversary, I'm making it free, so feel free to check it out - https://nynmetal.bandcamp.com/

I also have two videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqi4Gp25Tbo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cus0dxrSuLU

Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed the two videos, I'll have a listen to the album when I get chance, out of interest what is that beast of a guitar you're using and how many strings does it have?!

I've also just noticed that your newest output is Melodeath. Exception or new direction?

I explained it on several social media outlets, but the idea is that I had these riffs lying around for a long time and wanted to have a throwback EP as a love letter to the music that got me into the genre. The second album is underway, and it will be at least as heavy as the first album :P

Well they are certainly beastly guitars, i'm not sure my fingers could stretch to play one of those, I struggle enough with a 6 stringer.

I've never found that I struggle with extended range guitars (see my side project where I play an 8 string bass) but the neck of the strandberg was uncomfortable and the whole guitar was bulky to me.

This is the strandberg neck profile, it's supposed to be different at the top and bottom for lead/rhythm playing and your thumb, but it just ends up hindering you unless you play in a very specific way:

Killswitch, Howard Jones, and Devil You Know may not be super popular here...

But the new Devil You Know album is orgasmic. As good as the 1st.

Sounds a million times more interesting than any Opeth album.

Edit: psychedelic folk? Ehh, okay, only a... hundred times, maybe.

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea what that is. It's kind of weird, Psychedelic music has usually sort of left me cold, though I obviously do like a few bands that dabble in the genre; Pink Floyd is the most obvious (one of those bands that's truly one of the greats).

By the way, I remember you saying you were a fan of Loreena McKennitt (I think it was somewhere in the thread or something). Somebody recommended me her music I think late last year; Holy shit her voice.....OMG. She's fucking amazing, god damn,

Yeah, Loreena McKennitt is incredible. This summer my dad and I were sitting around drinking beer and he threw on this concert because he thought I'd be interested. We ended up watching the entire thing, barely saying a word to each other (which is a rarity for us).

Yeah? How's Howards cleans these days? Dude has a great voice and I know the diabetes have effected it a bit. I havent gotten around to getting the latest one but the first album was pretty fun, I got it recently and been enjoying it. He seems back in his element.

Tried making a Top Ten Favorite Opeth Song List, this is what I came with.

10. The Baying Of The Hounds
9. Wreath
8. Dirge For November
7. Forest of October
6. The Apostle In Triumph
5. The Drapery Falls
4. Harvest
3. Black Rose Immortal
2. Faith In Others
1. Blackwater Park

Also, in other news, Mikael is working on a Swedish-language Folk album, apparently. Huh.

Nice list, I'd put Black Rose Immortal at the top of mine though (and include Master's Apprentices and Reveries/Harlequin Forest), I love those long songs.

So Luca Turilli's Rhapsody is coming to my town next year...anyone ever seen them live?

Just returned from Vienna.

holy crap

Ghost slaughtered. Fantastic show with awesome sound (Mummy dust live just kills). Crowd was also great.

Off to bed now, I am awake for almost 24 hours

You're not a fan of Metal-GAF's favourite band? I thought this thread was a circlejerk!
Yeah, because they only get shit on any time someone so happens as to mention them in this thread. I don't care that you don't like the band, but calling it a circlejerk is a load of bullshit.

Been listening to Black Monolith - Passenger today, really enjoying it. Cool mix of melodic/depressive black metal and full-blast crust punk. The first and last tracks are particulary good, imo.

(note - it's non-sexual but I'll warn you that there's nudity in the album art, so probably NSFW)

These 13 year old's cover Mayhem - Freezing Moon. Listen to this little bad ass on the vocals lol. Fucking impressive as hell imo.

This is so good, ahahah

Damn, my neck still hurts. And I miss that nice lady that was in front of me. At least I know her name... :(
