Someone dumped their tape collection at the local record store:

Wish some of those were CDs as I haven't been able to entirely replace/upgrade my old cassette collection.

Any recommendations for Moonspell? I heard and liked Medusalem and had looked at their expansive catalog on Spotify. Any good starting points?

If you liked Medusalem, then you should probably start with their newest, Extinct. The whole album is really quite excellent. Probably one of their best. After that, I would recommend you check out Wolfheart and Irreligious. Wolfheart is their first album and is a fantastic blend of Gothic and Black Metal. Irreligious finds them pushing more towards straight Gothic Metal and it contains some of their best songs, like "Full Moon Madness" (they usually close their shows with it), "Opium" and "Ruin and Misery".

What Plasticine said, except make sure you give Sin/Pecado a spin too. It's kind of the culmination of their early period. They kind of went off the rails a bit after that album.

Too bad it's wasted on the worst format ever xD

LOL.

I dunno though, does anyone remember fast forwarding tapes to make them all sped up and chipmunk like? Only with Cassettes, LOL.

But yeah, they were good for not much else.

Speaking of format, what formats do you guys usually go for? I prefer CDs, mostly. Though I can get digital if it means I can get them for free through borrowing.

I've had the album for a week now, since Relapse shipped pre-orders early. It's good, but I don't love it. Omnivium took a while to grow on me, though, so we'll see. Cosmogenesis is still my favorite.

I've had it for about a month now (review promo) and I gotta say it really grew on me the more I played it. I was originally lukewam on it, but now I really love it. Give it time I'd say.

Here's the review if you care: http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2016/01/29/obscura-akroasis/

New Borknagar is really awesome. Hadn't heard of them before this, but it's kind of an addicting album. Is their other stuff good too?

SO what are you all looking forward to in 2016?

Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä I guess Oranssi Pazuzu is an established forece in the field of psychedelic black metal after 3 releases (Valonielu from 2013 being my favourite). What has been released on Värähtelijä so far sounds amazing. Spacey yet energetic music from the void. Releases on February 26.
Official released track: Soundcloud & bandcamp, crappy youtube version
Leaked track: https://youtu.be/TGfLyhkYrbw

Deströyer 666 - Wildfire Christ, it's been 7 years since Defiance released. Deströyer 666 play the death/thrash/black metal war anthems of a rampaging horde. Now for this release... the track that got released doesn't sound that great. Feb 26

Any appreciation of Colosseum here? I can't get over this part:

It's so good.

Damn, yes hehe.

I love most of their stuff, but the high for me is still Empiricism, if not just for the drumming. Asgeir Mickelson was out of his mind, a statement performance. One of the best in the world at the moment of his career where he had the perfect material.

This new Fleshgod album is fucking awesome. It feels like they finally got the right symphonic and death metal balance. Previous albums were a bit harsh on the vocals and a bit sharp on the symphonic, at least that's what I remember anyway. This one is a good blend of both.

It is, although you have to know their older material is a bit more extreme than this.
Even their acoustic album Origin is pretty awesome.

Yep, I'm loving the new Fleshgod album as well. So good, Gravity is my favorite track so far.

Checking out the new Rhapsody album now. So far so good.

Listened to a few new albums these last 2 days, some impressions:

Rotting Christ - Rituals
Got the leaked version yesterday, it follows the same formula of their latest albums, it really makes you feel in some macabre ritual with the strange chants. It's worth it, will listen to it more when it's officially released.

Obscura - Akróasis
A good album, at some parts reminded me of Necrophagist, but in reality it only made me miss Necrophagist a lot more. Decent mix of brutal and technical.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - King
Love their new album, very subtle and well done mix between the extreme, melodic and symphonic. The orchestral version of the album is awesome really good, it feels like a movie score, mainly a Batman movie score.

I love it. Sometimes I play that CD just for that particular part in that song.

It really is that good, and that's considering the rest of the album is killer. One of my favorite doom albums ever, but my taste in doom is apparently pretty narrow. I like the atmospheric, enigmatic stuff over all of the boutique fuzz Black Sabbath variations.

Shape of Despair's new album is in a class by itself, then there's the Colosseum albums.

Streaming. Physical is dead to me lol.

1. The convenience is awesome. My discs no longer rattle around the car getting scratched. Plug and play. The library is wherever my phone or computer is and I mostly listen to tunes at work.

2. I can pay a low monthly fee and get just about everything I want. If it's not here...well there's thousands of other albums that are.

3. I don't have some massive pile of stuff though that was more movies and games but I'm mostly digital on those as well now. The clutter extends to digital mp3 storage. I had a shit ton of those and simply deleted anything available on my service. Plus that's a pain in the ass to rip, name, and maintain. Then you have to buy a big ass card for your phone or swap out stuff. I want on demand, what I'm in the mood for not what's available.

4. With a service that has a decent library I can usually dig deep into a bands library. I can also sample a lot of bands and not buy duds.

5. The low cost but high availability means getting access to more than my wallet allows.

This Vipassi "Sunyata" album Metalsucks is streaming is pretty good. It's got members of Ne Obliviscaris. It's instrumental.

I mostly listen on digital. I use spotify and iTunes match to make sure my phone has almost everything under the sun on it. I still buy a ton of CDs, though.

This is my current collection (just bought the storage):

I have quite a few things on vinyl, though, but it's mostly old prog records. There's something nice about old prog on vinyl. I don't really like buying vinyl full priced, though.

And I thought my 120 CDs or so was a decent collection.

Kudos to you sir.

Yeah I have somewhere a little over 700.

I'm a graphic designer, so I like to have all these cool inspirations around. It's nice just kind of sitting by that shelf and picking something out to look at it for a few moments even if I'm not going to listen to it. The new shelving is even more great. My old stuff barely fit all these and started to fall apart so I was almost afraid of taking stuff out of it and looking at it.

Nice subtle Bowie showcase right there. :) I have that album on vinyl and I get the feelling it clearly is the main medium he intended it to be on, despite his history of ditching the traditional for the hot new stuff. (Sorry for being off-topic here)

Every time I listen to some Deströyer 666, I am filled with shame. Because of how long I wrote them off because of the "dumb name".

What a fool I was.

Easy mistake to make, I thought the same when I saw they were support at an Evile gig a few years ago,I thought they'd be a bit crap but we ended up seeing them anyway and they were awesome a nice find in the end.

Listening to the new album KING now... so Fleshgod Apocalypse went full powermetal huh... don't know that is genius or horrible :P
I don't really get any power metal vibes from their new album. It definitely feels more melodic than their other stuff, but I think it's great.

For me it's the pianos and choirs that makes it feel powemetalish. Was definitely not ready for this sound.

To me, I associate that with symphonic metal. Power metal (at least for me) is stuff like Hammerfall, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Primal Fear, etc.

I liked the older stuff, but some of it is a little too "wall of sound" for me. I really have to be in the mood for it.

sematics then :P power and symphonic are the same for me, but I get your point.

The KING songs would fit right into a Wintersun album. And they of the more "wall of sound symphonic" than "kick asses symphonic" of like Rhapsody.

Well melodeath is already power metal with growls, when you think about it.
Really? Are you sure you don't mean Butterfly Effect?
Very sure. Sin/Pecado was bland, wimpy and lifeless. Butterfly Effect at least had some intense moments and had a decently dark atmosphere, some edge to it.

Just finished Into the Legend, barring the bonus song which I'll listen to after dinner. Actually a lot more non-ballad songs than I expected for a Rhapsody album (Shining Star and Kiss of Life being the only slows). I have an overall positive impression, but I still don't know my entire feelings on it yet.

If you liked either the title track or Distant Skies, you'll (probably) enjoy the rest of the album.

"Kiss of Life", in particular, was strange. It's a ballad that's encapsulated on both ends by rather typical Rhapsody fare, although much like the rest of the album I felt the instrumentation was substantially better than even Rhapsody's average.
Standouts would have to be "Winter Rain" and "Rage of Darkness".

Vektor as well? Wish they would swing by the west coast this tour but oh well. Have fun!

That's the one. Little mini-review. Decent crowd, I was expecting it to be half empty due to the superbowl, $30 tickets, and well, frankly Voivod not being that big in the US. Too weird for the nuthrash kids, not heavy enough for the too extreme crowd, not gimmicky enough for the Ensiferum crowd. That said, they do have their hardcore fans, which I think made up the majority of the crowd tonight.

Eight Bells: Admittedly not really my thing, but solid for what they were. Kind of a mix between psychedelic occult rock, doom and prog. Dug their reverby guitar tone, reminded me a little of Negative Plane.

Vektor: Well, not the best I've seen them. To me they seemed (maybe just the frontman) visibly tired, though they did get better as they warmed up. Played two new songs, that sounded like Vektor songs. Apparently they have a new album coming out which I completely missed, though I guess it's about time.

Voivod: There's something about certain bands (usually ones that have been doing this a long time, but not always) that's really elevates them above other live shows. It's more than just professionalism, it has to do with fitting all these moving parts together into a well-oiled machine, and then making it look effortless. Voivod is one of those. (Suffocation is another.) Anyway, great set. Only real complaint is I wish that they'd change up the setlist a little bit more. The only two songs I expect to hear without a doubt are Ripping Headaches and Astronomy Domine, and maybe Voivod. The rest I wouldn't mind them changing out. I think most of the diehards wouldn't mind hearing some deeper cuts. Black City? Order of the Blackguards? Lost Machine? Brain Scan? Hell, personally I'd even like to hear Clouds in my House. Might be alone on that one.

Anyway, good show all in all.
