oh yeah, i think it was GuardianHeroes in the genesis thread that got me onto cleaning every single cart i get, however it looks (even in cases), i was surprised how very dirty some where & still worked.

does windex work for taking sharpee names off the cart casing? just noticed some chick's name on my Majora's Mask, that shit won't do. you had like 20 minutes into this holographic-labeled masterpiece and sold it to me on the cheap, it's mine now!
I'll definitely want to clean these and since I'm picking up the proper tool will clean all future carts.

Windex didn't work for one of mine that had Sharpie used on the back. I'm not done yet but if anyone knows something to clean the carts, and remove the permanent marker even if the stickers should be avoided, please let us know.

On the verge of ordering Castlevania, Blast Corps, and Mischief Makers on Amazon...

Castlevania comes in the original box, but the other two are in universal game cases. Is there any comparison of those next to the original game boxes? Are they bigger? Smaller? About the same size? I don't have any experience with those cases. Everything I own is solely with the original boxes.

Here is the pic I took. Still working on cleaning them up but thought I should go ahead and post since it will likely be a while before I am satisfied I have them clean.

Edit: for reference I've worked on cleaning the top three (not done tho). The bottom ones still need cleaned up.

i can take a pic at home, ive only got mischief makers (j - thanks again bradders!) in original box, it sits slightly taller than the universal game cases i keep for NES/SNES/N64 carts, but they're great for looseys.

Ah, thanks! :)

By "j," do you mean that you have the Japanese version? If so...cool! I'm not sure if the sizes for those are different from the US ones, though. I know that Super Famicom game boxes are definitely a different size from SNES boxes. Same with NES, GameCube, and I think GameBoy games, too. Not sure about N64, though...

I still haven't ordered anything yet...heh. I might go ahead and order Castlevania since it comes with the original box and is only a few bucks. The rest...I'm still contemplating. I have this slight obsession with only getting everything with the original boxes...instructions are optional, though.

yeah, japanese...now that you mention it, i have no idea how those relate to US boxes though, somewhere between all the moving i was doing back then, i realized my nintendo boxes had no chance of survival (lost a bunch in a hurricane/flood anyway) and just started using plastic cases of any kind, so UGC's being uniform + allowing for custom cover art was a godsend for me. if i can dig up a proper us box off someone else nearby ill take a pic as well!

ps where'd you sort out castllevania 64 with manual for cheap? it looks like my ebay guy failed to send it (or it just didnt get here), wanted to try again for but super cheap

Those cases sound like a great idea for replacements. I thought about getting some for a few loose games I have...I might do that eventually.

Amazon. I keep getting a lot of free gift cards for them lately, so I've been ordering a lot lately. Hah. There's a few boxed copies of the game on Amazon right now for $10-$20 or so. There's also one that seems to come with a universal case along with the manual, but that one is actually more expensive...

Edit: Crap...someone bought the copy of Mischief Makers with the universal case that I was thinking of getting while I was waiting to make my final decision. A bunch of stuff that I had "saved for later" in my Amazon cart ended up getting sold over the last day. Heh.

Just got this baby from Japan today.

(Super Robot Spirits)

Sadly, after ripping it, it doesn't seems to run on P64, the picture is all squeezed up on top and the emulator crashes after the characters selection screen. *sigh*

Time to hook that N64 to the CRT!

That said, I'll add that, after importing a couple of JAP games, I really prefer these boxes and inserts. Better overall quality imo.

Next step: I'll be looking for some Bomberman games, because I got NONE of them. D:

Behold, a thing of beauty:

The 'Mini Mii'

The 'Mini'

Found these on Youtube about a week ago. The guy has modded original Nintendo 64 consoles into mini versions and has them for sale. The orange version has sold already and the second version dubbed 'Mini Mii' is in the prototype stage.

It's difficult to PM him, and as he's in the US I'm unsure of the availability of custom non-110v power adapters (he uses his own not the console originals). It looks like at least on the Mini Mii version the tabs have been removed to allow for Japanese cartridges. Loving that Mini Mii version!

On the high res modes with the Expansion Pak, were there any games that didnt have a hard FPS drop when enabling the mode? High res is nice and all, but I dunno if the framerate loss is worth it. Also, is it true that S-video cables that also have the yellow video input arent true S-video?

I've got my N64 connected via S-video cables I got from Racketboy that also have that yellow composite attached...of course it could just be that N64 games arent really as sharp as I remember them either way lol.

Also using Gamestop universal cables with S-video (the "legacy console" labeled variety) for my SNES. I've seen it mentioned, just not sure if it was true or not.

Been having a bit of a rough time recently, but been cheered up by the fact that my girlfriend bought an N64 for me earlier

It's a Japanese black unit, it has an official expansion pak and was only £30. Its pretty much a bargain.

I've already got a SCART RGB cable and a UK power brick. I've got a load of US carts still - I guess I just need to hack off the tabs in the cartridge slot to play them, right?

One thing I'm missing is a controller. I'm either going to get an N64 official pad and a third party replacement stick, or a hori mini.

Removing the tabs seems like a fairly simple process, my JPN N64 came with them already removed but there are guides everywhere on the web on how you do it.

Oh and once you go Hori you can never go back. They are a bit expensive but damn do they make playing the games so much better.

To be totally honest, I would only be paying the same price as a new 360 or PS3 controller for a Hori Mini on eBay. The price isnt that bad for what it is. It'd have to be a transparent blue one though - they look awesome.

And if you don't end up liking them, you could always relist it and get your money back through resale.

Here are a couple of avatars I made up for grabs. To claim them just reply like 'Claimed the chocolate avatar', etc.

The first is one inspired the recent Conker's Bad Fur Day directors commentary on Youtube (really fun btw). It's a piece of the anti-gravity health chocolate, refined a bit.

The second is a character from Getter Love!!, an Japanese party game made by Hudson Soft for the system.

So, the RGB mod. Seems simple enough (I did the SNES 50/60hz mod easily). Is it worth doing? Picture difference noticeable?

As mentioned before, I have a JP console coming my way soon.

again my RGB modded/amped system is right here, but im waiting till mid july when retro_game_accessories returns from hiatus for a proper cable, meanwhile it's on upscaled composhit =/

if you're still asking in a little more than a few weeks ill totally take pics & post impressions though! for what its worth my modder said it was fantastic on his end, he's usually more reserved about such a claim too

Wahay, my N64 was posted yesterday...but considering it's coming from Japan, I have no idea how long it will take to get here to the UK. Hopefully two weeks or so.

I won't have a controller until august either way - I want a hori, but Ive spent enough money already.

Broken on the neo-geo board is selling Nintendo multi out cables that he makes for $15 shipped in the us. I bought one for my SNES and RGB modded N64. He's supposed to ship them in the next few days, but supposedly he makes high quality stuff. If you want his email pm me and I'll give it to you.

interesting...still wary of buying from other people since that horror story in the saturn thread (dude thought he had one kind of cable from en ebay seller, ended up the other & he fried the RGB in of his XRGB...), but if you can verify it's a euro SCART RGB & high quality, i might consider it!

Just bought one of these

I used to have one back long ago, and I heavily recommend it to anyone who wants a decent third party pad. The shape of it is ideal, and the stick is superb, and doesn't get worn out. The only downside are the mushy shoulder buttons (rubber buttons), but the rest is pretty much as good as you can get. Due to the better stick, I would actually recommend this over the official pad. Seriously. The placement of the Start button is great too! Just a quick move to the left and bam, yooure paaauuused

will hold me over until I can afford a hori mini!

and for reference, this cost me a tenner. Quite a bit more than the 99p I paid when I discovered my original one in a GAME bargain bin over a decade ago but ah well. Still great for the price.

He does both, but he mostly sells them for PVM's and those are all Euro. If you're using it with an XRGB he actually has some stuff specifically for that as well.

Right. I've just ordered an Everdrive 64 NTSC. I want to bundle all my carts away in display and just use this - what's the best way to rip them? And before anyone says to just download the roms, I want to keep my saves from my carts!

I have a retrode...so would the n64 plugin for that be sufficient?

Retrode is pretty much the only way to go for what I know, but it doesn't transfers the saves, even if it does with SNES/GEN games. :(

I've recently moved all my old systems and games from my parents house to my own apartment. I feel like hooking up my PAL Nintendo 64, with a broken reset button, but I don't have the space for a spare CRT TV. What's the best way to hook it up to an HDTV? I own a Sony Bravia KDL-40V4000 but I prefer it to be hooked up through my sound system, a Onkyo 22HTX with an HDMI out on my TV. Any advice?

I don't really get this part. So you want the N64 audio to come through your sound system? Isn't this what happens when you just plug the N64 into your TV like people have been doing since it came out? That's how all my systems are hooked up to my TV. Everything goes into the TV and then there's an audio cable going from the TV to the stereo. Zero fumbling around, just plug it in and go.

Or maybe I can do magic without knowing it.

My set up is gonna be N64 via SCART to my TV, then optical out to my sound system. Done.

everything else is set up via HDMI to my receiver, and then to my TV via a single HDMI out. I'm happy with it. Simple.

I don't have any specific N64 cables. If you internally mod your N64 for RGB, then a SNES scart cable should work with it.

Don't see why not, since they use the same video output port.

Anyway, I got a copy of Mischief Makers thanks to televator, and damn, man...this game rocks! But that was expected, since it's from Treasure, after all. Haha.

Yea, if you've got a scart rgb cable it'll work just fine with an rgb modded n64. It'll also work on a GameCube modded to output rgb I believe.

out of curiosity, what's the advantage of an RGB modded GC over just using nintendo's component cables?

I actually don't know. I don't know if you can even get 480p through scart, and I don't even know if GameCube will output 480p at all. The only reason I would use it would be to play it on my Sony pvm monitor as opposed to have it upscaled on my main HDTV.

In a couple days, this thread will settle down into what matters: talkin' 'bout Ogre Battle 64 ALL DAY ERRY DAY.

God I fucking miss that pre-rendered kinda look the 64 rocked. Person of Lordly Caliber and Harvest Moon 64 both just killed an aesthetic nothing even resembles today.

Just look at that Ankiseth:

This would look good if it wasn't so low res. I really liked the art in OB64.

You should take some pics of the N64 through scart when you get some time. I'm anxious to get mine up and running. Fingers crossed that my cables will be in on Monday!

Very nice on the Everdrive. I've seriously been considering getting a few of them.
It's definitely worth the money. The firmware is fast, the build quality is absolutely superb. It's customizable to a nice degree, and you can even save memory pak saves to the SD, providing you have a memory pak plugged in ( to fool the system).

very happy with it.

I still want that Perfect Dark jp. cover version as a poster. Couldn't find any HQ images yet ;(.
Here's one I found, not super hi-res, but still. I think it was one of the original Rareware promo wallpapers.

Also captured these Paper Mario 3D stereoscopic images from a video on Youtube showing the iZ3D driver in use with Project64. Cross your eyes at a distance from your monitor to blend the two images.

So, I got my Japanese n64 today.

Works fine using my GameCube's composite cable, but the SCART cable I have doesn't display any image - just sound. Do I need a Japanese SCART cable?

Composite is so, so, so bad.

JP 21-pin RGB cables are wired differently from SCART, but also be aware that no N64 is capable of RGB out of the box.
The early N64s can be modded for RGB output, but the later ones cannot.

Heh. Ive had mine today for a few hours and I've already RGB modded it. It's only three wires, easy shit.

But yeah, I guess I'll have to get a proper RGB cable. I guess that could be tricky

^maybe not so much; turns out the same SCART RGB the SNES uses works fine!
Maybe my scart is just a dud. The description did say it was ONLY for the GameCube, but I assumed they were universal. I mean like I said, the composite cable I'm using now is from my GC.

Sorry about not following up on this sooner. With my set-up, it's the other way around. I have everything hooked up to my sound system and there's a single HDMI passing through all video to my tv. I was just wondering if there's a decent way to display the video that way. Currently it's just the sound hooked up, which is a bit of a nuisance.

I've also ordered an everdrive v2. Can't wait!
