I went from the Atari 800 to the ST but in the end betrayed Atari and bought a Amiga 500 .
I loved the early racing sims. , played Formula one on the ST days on end and multi player stunt Car racer with two ST's linked with a null modem cable on 2 screens all the time but the main reason to buy the Amiga for me was Indy 500 .
I adored that game , played for the full 200 rounds on professional , had races where i crashed in the wall after almost 2 hours in the 175 lap or so .

Great times !!:D

The Atari 400 and Atari 800 was designed by a team headed by Jay Miner for Atari. Jay also designed medical equipment including innovative pacemakers.

I also had an AtariST, I completed Dungeon Master on this computer, the first 3D realtime action computer role-playing game.

I also played a lot of multiplayer games on both Amiga and AtariST, the original version of Lemmings on the Amiga was much better though as for example you could use 2 mices simultaneously and on the AtariST one had to use a joystick. Stunt Car Racer was awesome to play on two networked computers, likewise was Knight of the Sky and the Populous games.

The first online game I've ever played was on the Amiga during the 80s, Backgammon, Chess, Checkers and such, games from 1987 for the Amiga 500 and higher specced Amigas.

@ CaseyTappy

Emulation of the Amiga 500 has come a long way, you can even play those old nullmodem games over the internet through emulation, neat stuff.

You could do a lot on even an entry level Amiga like the Amiga 500, people can take a look at this video here to get an idea:

Amga 1000, the most revolutionary home PC ever created:

This picture sparked some memories of an old TV show that aired around 1985 in the UK, called Micro Live. Here's the obligatory YT vid for posterity (they introduce the Amiga around 2 mins in):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS-NYK-8KL0

Back then, when I watched the show, things like the Mouse and WIMP (aka GUI) were like magical devices! The show put the Amiga on the map for me, and I couldn't resist an A500. Awesome times.

EDIT: Micro Live.

Can anyone here help me out getting a new powersupply for my A500??
I picked on up last year, but it was missing the PSU.

Even though the 500 had faster boot times, I still preferred my 1000.

Wish I had it today so I could play some of those old Cinemaware games like Defender of the Crown and King of Chicago.

did anyone pick up a Minimig? Been a little tempted!

Everytime someone mentions this I get really tempted. I go over the websites, read testimonies and start convincing myself that it would be a great purchase.

Then my senses kick in and I realise that over a hundred quid for a hardware based amiga emu is just a bit much....

Maybe one day...

well, if anyone ever goes for it, they should report back....

(finger goes towards order site...)

Wise fwom youw gwaaave...

It's been.... 5 years since the last article but ta-da! Article number 8 is finally out! And it's about The Demo Scene.

A history of the Amiga, part 8: The demo scene

Author’s note: The Demo Scene is the latest piece in a long-running Ars series on the history of the Amiga. The last installment in the series ran in 2008, but professional obligations for the author caused a delay. More chapters are on the way—emphasis on chapters. The ultimate aim is to compile all the parts of this series into a book. Stay tuned!

And for the previous ones:

A history of the Amiga, part 1: Genesis
A history of the Amiga, part 2: The birth of Amiga
A history of the Amiga, part 3: The first prototype
A history of the Amiga, part 4: Enter Commodore
A history of the Amiga, part 5: postlaunch blues
A history of the Amiga, part 6: stopping the bleeding
A history of the Amiga, part 7: Game on!

Guise, guise. I want to buy Amiga Forever, but apparently there's no list out there of the games included in any of the versions. Anyone know what's up with this? I don't want to end up with a pack of games I don't want to play :/

Does anyone know how I can contact the creator of the old PD/Share ware game Master Blaster?

Btw I have the signature of Petro Tyschtschenko on my Amiga and I also am a proud owner of the Amiga theme song on CD ;)

The Amiga was fantastic and if you miss Deluxe Paint I can recomend Pro Motion by Cosmigo (PC).

What I really miss is CygnusEd.

Funny to see this particular thread today...I pulled out an old INFO magazine from 1989 to read on the train to work today. Interesting to look back at the beginnings of IBM's encroachment on the Amiga gaming space from this perspective.

And OMG OMG Mac users can now use desktop publishing! Never mind the Amiga had that available for years previous. Yes I'm still bitter.

You and I both. I had many popular programs. At the time I was a flight sim nut and loved FA/18. Turbo Silver, Paint programs and I think Pagestream was it? Tons of games too. Ferrari Formula 1, The Tv Sports games. Shadow of the beast. In Utah in 89 there was a damn fine computer store which had all the Amiga games at all times.

To watch Commodore destroy it was heartbreaking to say the least. Later on the Draco and other variants tried to resurrect it to no avail. The two idiotic companies, First Escom then Gateway gave me hope for revival. Nothing but mostly lipservice IIRC. Especially Gateway. To this day a small part of me wishes for a revival. I know it's not happening.

Home to best home version of Marble Madness I ever got to play, even with a mouse instead.. FA18 Interceptor one of my favourite flight sims ever.. I sold hundreds of the Amiga Batman and Cartoon packs when I was in retail, and fixing the greens screen problem was one the easiest and most profitable things I ever did.. My first hard disk (20MB) and my first virus shortly after - threatened to crash the hard drive heads (it didn't lol). Monkey Island 1+2, Great Giana Sisters (arguably the first time I ever played a Mario game), Jesus on E's, the 20th Century Fox and Scanners head demos, Mod trackers, Guru Meditation, Deluxe Paint, It came from the Desert, Shadow of the Beast and Lemmings (Psygnosis!)... I could go on all night.

<3 Amiga Forever.

I sold quite a few of those grenade style joysticks pictured as well and they had a pretty close to 95% return (as in completely broken) rate as far as I remember.

Armour-Geddon was the most ahead of it's time game ever created.

It's mind boggling how innovative it was.

RTS before RTS.

Realtime 3D first person control of multiple vehicles.

And you could play head to head against someone over a modem.

All in 1991.

It took 10 years for anything even close to it to come out.

Oh man. The memories. I had an Amiga 600 back in the day. Came with a full Meg of ram and more compact design (no number pad). Suck it Amiga 500. So many hours playing this thing. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Who remembers skidmarks? Good times

The Amiga...the machines we should all still be using today instead of all this "i" crap, damn Commodore, I wish you and Apple could trade places.

Have some Desert Dreams...because I said so.

The A600 was cramped...

I had a tricked out A3000 as my main Miggy (Also had an A500 and A2500) that was a machine to contend with.

I remembered it being an ergonomic nightmare and lo and behold I remembered correctly. So uncomfortable to hold. Need another joystick (or two) if I get this working. And I need to descend into my basement to check which games still boot.

Edit: I need this again! Rockstar at my hamster

I had an A500 that I adored. I loved the OS and the games seemed so advanced.

My personal fave: STARGLIDER 2. Man that was epic!
Hope I get some of the same vibes playing No Man's Sky...

Cool, make sure you let us know what still works.

Konix Speedkings FTW!

Lol. All I remember is I loved the shit out of it. Even had street fighter 2 on it at one point (fucking terrible controls but I was a kid and still loved it because it was my fav arcade game at the time).

I sure will. Hopefully I can borrow a cable this week.

I had the Konix one but the stick is too short for my liking.

Also, that Cheetah Bug joystick by krejlooc looks hideous! But if it works then it doesn't matter. :)

Wow... cool thread. I don't remember if I've ever touched an Amiga. If so, I didn't know it at the time.

I was an NES kid, but it's cool to read about everyone's nostalgia for this old hardware. Subbed :-)

This thread makes me smile. Even though I had computers before my 500, it was the Amiga that helped grow my love for gaming.

Monkey Island made point and click my go to genre for many years, using the password wheel to make pirate face combinations is something I remember even now. The 'fun' of changing the disks countless times for Beneath a Steel Sky is another good memory (God knows why, it was a massive pain in the arse).

And those are just the point and clicks, that's not including the Dizzy series, Batman, the Robocop games, Wings, Soccer Kid and countless others.

Fucking loved the Amiga.

If we're resurrecting this thread, then I gotta post the Spaceballs/State of the Art demo:

And while I'm at it, Sound of Silents, with music by Jesper Kyd (who went on to score Assassin's Creed, Borderlands, and a bunch of other stuff):

As a bonus, the title music for Turrican II:

First GAF thread I've ever subbed to :)

Seriously, though I loved the Amiga, for me it was a golden age of gaming full stop. The ST gave the Amiga an excellent run for it's money (though slightly inferior) with often superior ports (and vice versa). The SNES and Megadrive (I'm UK) were great machines as well, and you had the excitement of the first imports in there too (so many copies of Super Street Fighter II at £70 sold)

I don't have a lawn

I remember paying about £10 a week for one from Rumblelows. I was only on a YTS, imagine paying a 3rd of your wages for a year for a XB1/PS4, but i just had to have one.

The Space balls State of the Art demo is still amazing full screen on a tablet, even more so considering it was done 20 something years ago on a 7mhz machine.
And Chris Heulsbeck is God, I have to lookup if that Kickstarter of his music ever took off.

They did some amazing stuff. Still do but not as much.

If I remember correctly, Housemarque, had some history in the Amiga demoscene, so that's why I always expect them to have very beautiful effects. If you look at Super Stardust and Resogun it must be the case.

Ha, great to see this thread on the front page, I just got my brother a 500 for Christmas. Many fond memories of him coming home to find me on his Amiga and the subsequent shouting matches when he realised I'd ruined his sensible soccer save!
