The Official GTA: Chinatown Wars thread

Anyone got tips for the "Pimp His Ride" job? It's simple enough but for whatever reason I always run out of time (the shop takes me like 1 hr over the deadline). I've tried ,ike 5 times now.

edit:
NVM. I'm dumb. I didn't know i was supposed to go back to that dude's garage.

I came across a big accident with a burnt out truck, police and ambulance etc at a junction the other day and wondered whether that was a kind of one-time scripted thing or whether these things are really put into the game world randomly. Impressive.
I hadn't been playing for more than an hour and I got an SMG because I came across some thugs having a shootout with cops. I ran the thugs over, cops didn't seem to mind one bit, and I scooped up the SMG one of them had been using.

This game surprised me quite a bit, saw the excellent reviews and caved even though I thought GTA4 was in the totally wrong direction from San Andreas. Not only is it a ton of fun to play (the old school meets new school comments couldn't be more apt) but its also a technological marvel for the DS. Super impressive.

God damn, I played the Dragon Noodle Delivery service mini-game. It was all standard delivery routine until suddenly rival noodle houses started coming in shooting you and blowing stuff up. Holy crap :lol

I'll have to find this one! Has anyone met the prostitute yet?

There is a Dragon Noodle place very close to where your first safehouse is, so check that out.

I met the prostitute and her gangs. It was a close encounter but my body armour prevailed :D

There is another random encounter I had where a guy said he needed to get ready for a porn audition of some sort. He needed to be "ready" before arriving and he couldn't ready himself while driving so I had to drive him to the audition place while the car is rocking all the way there. Oh, and then something like 7 ladies left the car after arriving at the audition place @_@

Beat the game yesterday, very good game when playing it, but the story is utter shit, the ending is the most pathetic shit I have seen in a long time.
And dont start me with why
they killed at the start the only fucking girl in all the game, I would have understand it if they were more girls, but no, all the story is about transexual chinese guys.

Is Bully the only R* game with an awesome story?
Thank god the rest of the game plays great.

I had no weapons or armour, so I just ran away as fast as I could, which counts as a pass!

Thanks, I'd seen that thing before, but not realised it was even a vehicle!

I've also found a woman with a hospital appointment
there's 2 missions with her.
And a talky woman who needed driving to meet her husband or something, but she got killed somehow and I can't find her again :(

The story is light and fun for a crime game. The story line is a nice fit for a game with this cartoon art style.

I can see why you hate it though if you are looking for a real storyline.

More my kind of story than the GTA IV story.

I loved the GTA4 story so I was hoping to get more in that style. It's not a big complain though. The story works and the gameplay is amazing. It's in my top 3 GTA list for sure.

Not sure if this is posted already but....

The Times newspaper interviewed Gordon Hall, the president of Rockstar Leeds about Chinatown Wars:

Gordon Hall said:
"The company is run along clear rules. “Rule one,” says Hall, “is that every other meeting takes place down the pub, where we can talk and the ideas flow. See that road over there? There's a pub up the hill that'd go out of business if it wasn't for us.”

Gordon Hall said:
We may only have 16 people working on a title at any one time, but as far as I'm concerned, all 80 people here are games makers. Once a week, we have a day where we stop work, and everybody in the office, my PA included, will play a portion of the game we're working on at random. We listen to everybody's comments and try to make improvements accordingly. Over the two years we've been working on Chinatown Wars, everyone you see in here has played every single section of the game. We all know it inside out

I was not looking for a serious story. Bully had a great not serious story. This on the other hand sucked, and sucked major balls, as I say the ending is just rubbish.
I have to say I love some of the quotes that Huang said to his bosses, but the rest is forgettable.

I'm looking for no story in a game like this. Game is a success in that regard. Doesn't bog the game down at all by trying too hard it's just here's a bunch of random bullshit now go have fun.

Never before has the company opened its doors to an outsider. I am allowed to look around, as its 80 employees sit in open-plan silence at blinking screens, tweaking, playing and testing Chinatown Wars and other games whose very existence the company will officially deny.

Hmmmmm.

Indeed. No more than 16 of the 80 people at R* Leeds ever worked on Chinatown Wars at the same time, so the majority of the studio is obviously working on something else. Probably something bigger.

Really enjoying it at the moment. I find myself getting a little too caught up in the money making/drug trading side of it though.:D

This game is so fucking great, I spend around 3000$ on the lottery, damnit

Yeah, it's crazy. Lottery is so simple and even stupid, but it's much more enjoyable than pool and darts in GTA IV.

I'm not having a big issue with driving anymore. I can weave through traffic easily now. Just can't floor the gas all the time, need to learn when to let up on it to slide between cars.

Love the drug trafficking aspect of the game. So addicting.

Hold X near a cab :p.

You must not be holding it for long enough, even though it doesnt take long. Hold X and the character should put up his arm in the "HAIL HITLER CAB" pose, the cab should stop and allow you in.

but the trick is to be far enough away from the cab so that you don't hijack it. I think his problem was that he was hijacking it instead of calling it.

I read on GameFAQs that after you beat the main game,
some lion statues or something will randomly spawn in a couple of them for some endgame bonus missions.
(Not really a spoiler, but don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone)

That could be wrong though, given the source was the message board (I know, I know..)

from ds-scene forum

The Blue Swirls: At the end of the game,
2 Golden Lions will randomly appear at the blue swirls. Catch them, then go online and upload your stats to the Social Club, and you will get 2 Bonus Missions!

EDIT: beaten by a mile, i probably should have refreshed

Probably not the most convenient way to do it, but I really like the option to whistle for a cab. Makes me look a bit silly, but it works pretty well :lol

Did so today. Check the dumpster nearby - got a shotgun that REALLY HELPED. Also had body armor that helped me get through it...

So does anybody know how to get the ammunation trucks? I tried stopping one but totally destroyed it, so I couldn't collect anything. Can't hijack it either.

Hit it with a molotov and the driver should get out. Hijack away.

When hunted down by too many cops (e.g. 4 stars and above with alot of guns), i just prefer to die. It seems to me that when I die, i keep my weapons. If i get busted, it is zero weapons again >.<

I had thought that dying would wipe my guns as well, but it seems that i still can keep them.

On the other hand, GTA:CW is like a condensed GTA, without all the visuals. It focuses on a lot of classic GTA action. (I.e. punching pedestrians, wait for ambulance, run over ambulance crew with ambulance.)

The mini games helps quite a lot to break some of the duller moments.

Whether this will go to the Wii.....I don't know. I think they would shy away from it, especially if we look at their past attempts at entering into Wii.

When you get busted, the cops take your weapons/drugs. When you "die" you get fixed up at the hospital, and one must assume that they don't care about your weapons and drugs. Kind of weird, but it's always been that way in GTA.

EDIT

By the way, this game is fantastic. Not trying to sound like one of those annoying "I hate everything that's popular" dipshits, but it absolutely spanks GTA4. Best one since Vice City, imo.

I also restart when busted. As discussed earlier, it's pretty easy to get busted in this game but thankfully I rarely lose any progress thanks to the friendly save system.

Yep, to put it sappily it really recaptures the magic of GTA3. It's certainly flawed in many ways, but then again so was GTA3, but that desire to keep coming back and doing different sidequests, and to just cause chaos and see what happens reminds me so much of playing GTA3 for the first time. I liked SA a lot too, but that was because of depth rather than the aforementioned magic.

This is the first GTA that has been able to pull me away from the story missions to do the side missions. I'm addicted to the drug-dealing economy of the game, it's not even funny.
