The Official "New Super Mario Bros." (DS) Thread!

I'll probably write more on this later. This game is insane fun. Whoever was complaining about the difficulty is either too skilled for their own damn good or must have just been running through the game Sonic style. How could you not slow down and enjoy it's savory juices? I've beaten it and am currently finishing up the secret worlds and going for 100%. For what the designers were going for (mainly a SMB throwback but w/ elements from the whole series), I would call it a "Massive Triumph."

There is some great level design here, but I agree with the posters who said they didn't take some of the ideas far enough as in Yoshi's Island. The fact that in that game, each stage had a name clueing you in on the level's unique theme added a bunch of character as well. I mean, "Touch Fuzzy, get dizzy" Come on, that's just greatness right there. And that boss fight where you get swallowed and have to fight the boss from inside its stomach... *runs off to play Yoshi's Island*

Woot! Cleared 100% of the game. Some of the last few coins were quite hard to get (especially the mini mario ones) and there was a dastardly ghost house one which took ages to figure out.

My review after all is said and done

8.5/10

AWESOME AWESOME GAME.

why isn't it a 9 or 10?

It had to end, and there wasn't any suprises ala STAR ROAD. :(

Its is however a very enjoyable throwback to classic mario and the platforming + control i
is spot on.

Some stages feel too short.

I do have problems with their limitation of power up keepsake to 1 which makes the mini mario challenges a bit frustrating (definitely something to try ONLY after you've beaten the game and unlocked the
save anywhere
feature.

Its highly replayable and I'm looking forward to playing it again.

1up podcast. Sold out in San Francisco EB? Anecdotal hit!

The game is good or great, but not quite fantastic -- I like the game, but it leaves me feeling empty after I'm done. Arrrgh...

It's just as long as SMB3 is, but it seems less...something. I don't know exactly what it is, but the game is just lacking something. It's still better than 95% of all other games on the market, but as it is a Super Mario Bros. title, I keep feeling like it should be even better.

What's driving me nuts is that I have this annoying feeling Super Princess Peach has more replay value than NSMB... and I really don't want that to be the case.

You are killing yourself with Nintendo nostalgia. :[

Now I fear of Twilight Princess coming out, I think that no matter how good the game is we're going to see people bitch about it.

TP had better be fuck awesome though.

They delayed it to add Wiimote functionality.
They've been saying that it's going to be the best zelda ever.

Lets see if Nintendo doesn't kill the LOZ brand name because they've sure been milking their franchises of late.

Got mine today and it's... too fucking hard! But then I've never managed to finish a single Mario game so I'm just a lamer I guess. I'll stick with it though.

Meh I'm to lazy to go through all the freaking posts to see if anyone has posted this but if you haven't bought a copy of the game yet go to Circuit City and get it. It's $27.99 there and it probably will be till Sunday. But I'm guessing this was already stated.

This game makes me so freakin' mad. 8-4 (the one with the
spiders
is kicking my butt). And the more frustrated I get, the more I rush or make stupid jumps. :(

oh. i remember that level... :(

World 8 is there to own everyone who was being sloppy in their platforming up 'til then. I know I was and I got stuck for a while at 8-4. You've gotta really rein it in and not just jump all over the place.

8-Castle2 is awesome, if by awesome you mean horrifying. I really enjoy that those moving-platform levels exist, but damn if they aren't wildly frustrating.

Sadly this World 8 can't really hold a candle to the brutal and amazing World 8 in SMB3, but it's a step up from the end area in SMW, to me. The level with the volcanic rocks falling from the sky is awesome.

Anyway, this just in from elsewhere on GAF: even Drinky says NSMB is excellent!

Which one? Bowsers castle? The final one? Because that's literally the easiest final castle I've ever played. Plus,
if you go in with a Mega Mushroom and whip it out during the battle, you can't lose. Squish Bowser and Jr. into the ground
.

Or did you mean the second TOWER? In which case I agree. Damn
moving green platforms
took my life too many times. Plus I can't get that third coin.

This game is just what it is supposed to be. A throwback to the old SMB's with a few new features.

I beat the game in about two hours, i unlocked level 4 and beat it on the way, then I skipped level 7. I am in the process of finishing it 100% but it is getting a little boring and repetitive. I think im missing probably 2 or 3 stars in about 3 or 4 of the worlds. I am going to take a break from it for a week or so then try to finish it up.

The game is too short or I am too good at SMB. There were not any difficult parts in the game, it is really easy, but still a lot of fun. I beat this a lot faster than I remember beating SMB3 I havent played it in years, but I think Im going to hook the old nes back up and give it a go to see how the difficulty compares. From memory I think SMB3 is a lot harder than this game.

Its not totally what I expected, but its a nicely done game. I dont think anyone that grew up with the NES will be disappointed in this game.

I think that the problem is that the game succeeds wonderously at what it was trying to accomplish...but part of me feels it should be accomplishing something else.

It does a good job playing with platforming mechanics and developing a title that feels new and old all at the same time. I LIKE platforming games, especially Mario ones, so there is a sense of fun and enjoyment throughout.

However, at the same time, I can't help but feel that everything seems a little bit too anemic. That there really should be something here to differentiate certain parts of the game from others. It really is just an updated rendition of SMB. This is fine, worth the $39 (Plus $10 Gift Card, so kinda $29 CDN) that I paid for it...but yet part of me still wants them to create worlds that throw me for a loop with their style and theme, and allow me to feel new emotions...not just going back to ones I had in the past.

I think it's difficult to deny that the game is fun. However, I can't blame people for being disappointed; this game very much exists as if SMB3/SMW don't exist.

I think my response to this is, if you can come back to me as of 1/1/2007, with NSMB, Yoshi's Island 2, Mario Galaxy, and Super Paper Mario all under your belt, and you feel like on the whole you were not well served by the group of them, then at that point there's a problem.

I'm not saying, like, you will definitely be satisfied, just that the realm of what a Mario platformer can accomplish is getting split up into four games right now, and NSMB is the retro one while SPM is the most likely wacky, innovative one.

...see, but I'd rather have a game that also innovates within the realm of the straight platformer. I don't think that "Well, if you buy all four games you'll be happy" does anything to change the fact that there is MUCH more potential for a Mario DS Platformer. That doesn't make this game bad, or even disappointing, but rather perhaps something lesser when there could have been something more. It's still good...but it could have been superb. It could have been epic...nothing here feels epic. Nothing.

Er.... how? I just said that the game wasn't as good as SMB3, although it's still a very good game. It's still a good game, just not as good as one of the earlier in the series.

DS is charging and I've never unwound my charger cord and I'm not about to do it now. I've never unwound my GBASP charger cord either, I'm just weird like that.

I thought the game had some hard moments. Nothing in Mario World or 3 was any harder.

I'm playing through Yoshi's Island again after finishing NSMB. I've currently got 78 lives without even TRYING to collect them because there's so many bonus games that are just SHOVE lives down your throat. I'm also virtually never dying. The only time I lose a life is from accidentally going too fast fast and falling down a pit. The mechanic of losing Baby Mario and having time to reclaim him makes the game very safe.

However.

The reason why Yoshi feels more meaty, is that besides the stages being a bit longer on average, just surviving a stage isn't the same as scoring well. Mastering a stage is usually very hard and requires a lot of exploration and experimentation. And trying to never get hit to avoid losing stars does make it much "harder".

As I've remarked before, this is the only place where NSMB falls short. It merely needed a stage scoring system for the hardcore to play around with.

The gold coins is your reward for expert play in NSMB, but I do agree that Yoshi's Island system is a better way to track expert play and it is the main reason I think it is better than NSMB.

I hate you with a fiery passion. On second thought, maybe that was just the Mexican food I ate.

Well I've only played up to the mid-castle on the second world and I'm enjoying it so far.

I love the music in this game that plays on the mushroom levels (that is, the levels with mushrooms that do different things, like bouncing mario up higher than normal or leaning a certain direction depending on where mario is standing on the mushroom)

I wish there were more collectibles, namely the three coins, eight red coins and blue coins like in SMS.

tiny big worlds

Yeah, it'd be cool if there were two more secret worlds, tiny world where you access it with a Mega Mushroom, and big world where you access it with a Mini Mushroom.

I rather like that piece of music myself, that being the only one...did the dude who usually does the Mario music compsoe this as well?

Okay my money is back and copy of the game sold. :) I'll stick with SMB DX for GBA Mario goodness and Mario 3 for DS Mario on the go goodness.

ugh no. Let's not turn it into a collectathon snoozefest like Sunshine or Donkey Kong 64. I do wish there were more stages, but the 3 big coins is enough. One of my favorite parts is I can easily replay the game to 100% every few months or so and it will still be fun.

I bought Drill Dozer from toysrus.com today for $16 mostly based on the suggestions of you, MAF and Drinky. (Was on sale for $20 and I had a $10 gift card and then S&H and tax have to be factored in but ANYWAY) The game better be good!

I think it sucked too but I don't think I'd trade it just yet, I mean at least it's better than the oringal Super Mario Brothers =\

It's really a shame, because if it didn't lack the impact of prior Mario sidescrollers, I really do think people would consider this the best one. It's amazing. And the music. :\ So good. Need a soundtrack.

Koji Kondo supervised the music, but he didn't compose it.

Ah so thats why the music wasn't catchy...hell at least Super Mario Sunshine had some catchy music, did he compose that?

That is what Yoshi's motherfuckin Island 2 is for. :P New SMB is fine but I would have liked more levels and better boss battles but I AM AN INTERNET NERD AND THEREFORE AM NEVER PLEASED.
