The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

wow that cvg review.. i want this game - they also mention a big surprise after getting all the coins, I wonder what that could be

Edit: Apparently, the full episode of GT-TV is up on Gametrailers now:
http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/77?ch=1&sd=1
It shows multiple boss fights, so if you think they are spoilers, then don't watch. It likely also contains the recent Zelda Spirit Tracks spoilers.

For all the talking the characters do, I'm glad the Yoshis don't grunt when they flutter-jump. The sound is a lot more like the original Yoshi's Island one.

This is true. Yoshi's voice, as someone growing up with Mario World 1 and 2 on the SNES, is kind of annoying. I like the voices of the other characters, though. I find their disappointment when they lose a life to be funny.

Something I wonder, though... In multiplayer, if you hit a [?] block, items fly out of the block everywhere. If it's only one player, does the item slide up normally? It'd be slightly annoying if the only item from a box flies into a hole in single player.

Why would you do that? said:

I suggest that in 1p, it's a mix of a single item sprouting out of the box, and in cases where it makes sense, the item will bounce out... but who knows.

Super Mario World FTW.
FUCK YES!

Man, seeing that pic of Bowser Jr. in the Clown Car is all kinds of fan servilicious. I can't believe how well Nintendo is treating Mario fans on the Wii. This game and SMG 1 and 2 really make up for the dry period the series went through in the N64 and GC eras.

If I remember correctly, it goes like this.

The specific cards that Huelen's talking about will do two things for you that are VERY good things.

1 - Fireball shots will turn enemies into coins.
2- Vegetables, a la Mario 2/USA and Adance will be spawned in levels.

Now, with the fireball->coin thing, what's really good here is that, any foes that turn into coins will stay coins until the coins either a) are picked up by Mario or b) scrolled off the screen. But like in Mario World, the game has a certain limit of how many coins can be on screen, which will then affect how many enemies can appear. Basically, turn more enemies into coins, and then you won't have to worry about enemies later, as long as you can keep the coins on screen.

As for the Veggies? Well, that's not hard to imagine. FREE PROJECTILES that can go ahead and wreck house, in addition to whatever you may have on Mario's person already. Mario with the extra maneuverability that comes from the SMB3 engine, along with some very good items. It's too good. :D

The E-reader power ups are indeed awesome.

It's too bad a lot of the E-reader bonus stages were kept in Japan though. :( Man, would I love to play some of those after seeing the vids on youtube.

It's a terrible shame, but even worse is the fact that e-reader cards are region-locked!

WHY?!!?!?!?!!?!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!? Why would you ever need to region-lock a piece of paper?!?!?!

I've been watching the Gametrailer TV special, there's a ton of new footage. My favorite bit is a clip of multiplayer in the desert where a Toad riding on a yellow Yoshi uses a spiny thrown by Lakitu to spit-kill a giant Pirahna plant. As if I didn't have enough evidence that this game is going to rock.

I'm going to import the game and all the proper E-cards someday if I have to in order to play those tasty stages. I'm too die hard to be stopped by region locking forever. :D

Someone actually made up a website with instructions on how to print out e-cards, with conversions of the Japanese SMB3 cards for use on American systems.

I remember this site being out there a few years ago...

It would be a total treat if there was an extra world where each stage was a recreation of past 2D Mario title. Make it happen Nintendo!

And its reasons like this that GAF is always disappointed by a game.

It's still out there, and updated since I last looked. I dunno how kosher it is to link here, though.

See, this is why you rule the internet. I'm not even trolling here, it was TMK that made me fall in love with gaming and more importantly Mario. Major props sir. I don't think I would actually use the resource, but the fact that it is possible makes me happy. Death to region-locking!

One of my favorite things in a Mario game was when Super Mario Bros. 2j had, after you beat the game, A-1 through D-4, which were re-imaginings of previous levels in the game, re-imagined to be much harder.

Also, if you don't use any warps, Mario 2j has a World 9, a parody of the -1 world of Mario 1. 9-4 is a level of Japanese text telling you that you're a good player or something.

It's hard to do, though. A while back, I remember reading that you need very specific paper in order to do it.

I'm fine with retro stages (lord knows romhacks love their 1-1 recreations), but I don't like exact recreations.

Make it your own, y'know? Add some spin to it. Change some stuff, maybe make it in the dark, put a few secrets scattered. I'd be angry if I reached to world 9 and it ended up being exact levels from past games with a new engine.

Something I think is even more inventive (yeah yeah shut up, I don't actually expect this) is taking retro levels from other franchises. I know a romhack that took levels from Megaman, Zelda 2, Sonic, Tetris and covered the Star World with them, and they were all really fun. Realistically Nintendo could only do it with Nintendo franchises (realistically they wouldn't do it at all) but whatever.

A few days ago my brother and I were talking about if World 9 was a retro world. If it had 8 levels there would be enough to have one level from every other 2-D Mario (if you don't count NSMB and if you count YI). That would be one level from SMB 1, 2, 3, SMW, the Lost Levels, SML 1 and 2, and YI. Here's hoping for a remake of Hop, Hop, Donut Lifts!

I love that Lakitu's cloud moves fast now. I guess they had to make that change, otherwise riding the cloud in multiplayer would be really problematic.

Pretty sure that some of the promo cards are damn expensive.

The only way to play the (excellent) 32 extra levels is to download the .sav that has them unlocked. Unless you're rich of course. Such a waste to do those levels and then confine them to e-reader hell (I mean, even if you were in Japan you had to get some of the promo cards to be able to play all the levels, that's pretty stupid). Nintendo should REALLY release them on DSiWare.

Well at least shows Nintendo can still make old-school levels, hope someday they do a similarly styled sequel. Sure NSMB is great, but it's not the same style. I finally played the e-reader levels this year and enjoyed it much more than NSMB DS.

Just FWIW, the save doesn't have unlocks; it actually contains the level data. The cards contain the level layouts themselves.

Man...It has been SOOOOO long since a console 2d Mario.

Freaking A....

3D marios are awesome and all, but nothing is better than where mario started his roots from.

My brother and I used to play SMW day in and day out. It was like the only game we had for a whole year, cause we werent rich like that. My jaws dropped when we found star world and the extra bonus stages. Hopefully, there is something extra like that in NSMBwii.

It seems like the game is more a throwback to SMB3 because of the layout of the worlds, the similarities in the small things (ie: the card games, the coin battle...)

Only thing I wish was that they had more powerups SMB3 crazy style. And it sucks how Peach isn't a playable character. Maybe she is, after you beat the game? I dunno.

I am hyped.

Singular as in "jaw dropped" or plural as in "balls dropped"? . . .

Well, I had nothing to do with that -- don't go praising me for things I have nothing to do with (and there are others who are far more deserving of praise than I am).

What's the difference?
It isn't content stored in the game that's unlocked with a simple code. People don't like that in games, especially if it's content you have to pay for.

The e-Reader cards contain the levels on them, so, if they wanted, they could continue making levels for it, even today.

Thinking about this, I had a brilliant idea... Nintendo should sell cards with a dot matrix picture on them, like QR codes... and when you take pics of them with your DSi, the code would be read and you can play new levels.

I don't know how, but a QR code can hold 2,953 bytes (about 2.7 KB I think), but Nintendo can create its own thing that can hold more bytes.

I know the levels aren't stored in the cart (just the assets), but I don't understand the answer... you can play the levels with the save through an emulator.

About QR codes, they could do that, or just release a batch of them through WiiWare/DSiWare. Easier for everyone (especially because you know they will make that level card you can only get at E3 and it'll cost a million dollars to buy it)

Yes. However, it is still a big difference, whether extra game data is stored in a save or if it is stored on a cartridge. Emulator-wise, it doesn't make much of a difference, though.

For collector's reasons, I think cards would be pretty nice. Of course, the cards would be scanned and stuff, but oh well.

Also, if they want to be really nice, they could just have pictures online, and you could take a picture of it on your monitor. That way, they could create and share new levels for free.

Bangai-O on the DS has a system where you could create and share levels though sound files that sounded like a modem. Because of this, there's a ton of replay value out there, and I think levels are still periodically released for it.

I'm conflicted about this game, it looks amazing but if it wasn't Nintendo's holiday game we would've gotten Super Mario Galaxy 2 this year.
