The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

It's sometimes better just to be "satisfied" than to be "full." I mean, with the former, you're less likely to get fat or bloated.

Yeah. Pipe Goombas.

Fuck that. I want love handles and bitch tits of platforming goodness all over my body.

So do most players prefer single or multiplayer? I want to get this if the single player is good.

Single player. I played it for a number of hours with my friends, and while it was hilarious and fun it doesn't beat sitting down and getting some serious time with the game.

Anyone know why they made the decision to go with 'floaty' momentum-y Mario? I am loving the game, but why not stick with more precise jumping? I'm really not a fan of Mario sliding 10 feet after every jump. Not sure what the momentum stuff does for the game, except make it feel less precise.

If you're sliding after a landing in the game you need to take your finger off of the gas (the run button). Kind of different than in past games where you mostly used the D-pad to control your landings.

Why are there spoilers in a Mario thread? :lol

There are some unexpected plot twists.
This time it's not Bowser who kidnaps Peach. There's a conspiracy: The toads (except for those two playable ones) co-operated with Andross (from the Starfox universe). The entire time you are made to believe that you will have to defeat Bowser. In the end it becomes evident that he was only a tool used by Andross and then you will have an Andross battle (just the same as in SF64 and Adventures).

Anyone else see this posted on Destructoid?
Somehow we got on the topic of the new playable Toads in NSMB Wii, and how I wondered if they ever had names. He said that from what he'd been told, they did have nicknames amongst the NSMB Wii development team, but that they weren't official. I retorted that from what I'd been told, Mario was originally called Jumpman, and that the Mario name was at first just a nickname based on the character's resemblance to a janitor that worked at Nintendo. This meant that in the Mario-verse, nicknames can lead to big things.

Of course, I asked what the nicknames were. He told me to turn the camera off. Then, with an extremely serious face, he whispered in my ear, "The yellow one is called Ala-Gold, and the blue one is named Bucken-Berry."

Now, I don't know if this guy knows what he's talking about or not, but I don't care. From now on, the yellow Toad is Ala-Gold, and the blue Toad is Bucken-Berry. Case closed.

Yeah I saw that option but you can use it only once i think. Still better than nothing.

You mean by "only once" as it only creates one file? As far as I know (although I haven't defeated any bosses yet) but the actual hard saves save to your original file, anyways.

If you don't mean that, I am not sure what you mean by "only once". You can do suspend save again, however it will just replace the previous suspended save. Which I don't see as an issue.

Or do you mean something else?

Oh my. A very early rough level editor has been released.

EDIT: Jeez, make that TWO. There's another one out. One's called Tanooki, and the other is Reggie.

Why can't Mario games have spoilers?

Spoilers don't necessarily have to apply to story only, but also types of stages (fire/lava, air, etc), or locations of specific Star Coins, secret stages, etc.

Thanks for the single vs multi player feedback everyone. I'm going to use my 40 dollar Amazon game credit for this one.

Heck, in retrospect I was going to buy this anyway. I'm such a Mario fanboy. I bought the N64, gamecube, DS and Wii pretty much because of the little guy.

This game isn't really that easy as far as Mario goes. I remember thinking that a few of the later levels in world 1 were pretty serious for world 1 status.

dunno. i remember NSMB and the older ones all being more difficult.

I think this is another case of people not realizing that these games seem easy only because of years of experience with the 2D Mario formula. I played SMW from start to finish for the first time at about the same time I played NSMB DS. The latter gets ragged on for its lack of difficulty when I thought the former was by far the more insultingly easy game.

i don't really think it's a case of that. there are still levels in SMB3 and SMW that give me problems more than any level i've found in this. however, if that's the case, then big N needs to change their game design plan a little in the opposite direction as well. now you've got things that slow down the pace and make things easier like user-controller moving platforms.

co-op actually adds to the difficulty in some of those areas, especially the ones that are timed, because sometimes it's hard to get everyone close enough on some of those platforms.

LOL I complained to Amazon because their preorder bonus of $10 off a future game purchase couldn't be used on Amazon marketplace, so they gave me an extra $10 off. Just picked up M&L3 for $15 shipped :D

Very cool.

Lunar Magic is one of the greatest things to happen to Mario in the last ten years or so. Some of the user levels are just insanely good and definitely on par with work Nintendo has done in the past (for the top few).

I suppose it's unlikely a Wii editor will result in the same quality of work as it requires you to mod your Wii to play the game in the first place.

after watching some videos online, I was thinking that this game would have been absolutely perfect for saving replays/trading with friends. I am only a bit in but I have pulled off some pretty neat moves that I would have loved to have been able to save/rewatch.

More than that, I doubt the average guys who hack SMW can do much in the programming way of the Wii. They can make completely custom bosses in hacks, that's insane.

This is really awesome though. Even if it'll be kept vanilla (no new stuff), more levels for like the next 10 years will be badass. I've seen vanilla hacks that are better than World already.

Very nice.

I was actually looking at the level data files on my disk. I'm not too good at hacking, so I couldn't do anything with them. I'm glad someone else is doing it!

It goes to show that this game will likely be more popular. There's only 1 level editor for New SMB DS, and that didn't come out nearly as fast as this.

Was talking to Amazon Saturday about a GC problem. They ended up discounting my order by mistake(some obvious English/India language barriers). Will get the game for a little less now

I especially like the crazy SMW hacks which are at times more like puzzle games than platformers

It's too bad finding those awesome hacks is an exercise in frustration simply because of how many bad ones flood the internet :/

And of course all the top tier ones get cancelled/are perpetually in limbo for whatever reason, leaving nothing but a tease (I'm looking at you Keytastrophe)

I'm pretty sure you could farm lives in SMB3 as well, as long as you didn't finish the level.
The world 7 fortress was made of gold coin blocks. If you were quick, you could grab around 10 lives before dying and getting yet another opportunity to do it again. A great way to build inventory for the last world.

Ah, memories...

I have to say that it my biggest pet peeve with the DS NSMB..I never ran out of lives. I mean never. It's almost impossible, mainly because the game is easy, but mostly because the game allowed you to collect multiple 1-ups in every stage. I had 99 lives by the time I got to World 2.

Tell me the new game doesn't fall into this same (we give you a 1 up for everything you do) trap. Galaxy had the same problem...even if you lost lives Toad was always around to give you 5 more.

I've seen some people say that the propeller hat is a weak flying powerup compared to SMB3's raccoon tail or SMW's cape. I think this is a bad comparison. The modern New Super Mario Bros. team seems against flying in general, to prevent people from skipping stuff by just going over it. The propeller hat is more of a jump with benefits; in the same class as Super Mario Land 2's bunny hat.

You could fly through some levels with ease using the bunny hat though.

Oh man, you know what would have been awesome in this game? Mii implementation.

Totally serious about this one. It's not like there are any gameplay differences between the four characters to begin with.

wait..so Luigi doesn't have his shaky legs jump?

and yeah, why not allow you to use your Mii? Think about how awesome that would have been. It's almost like creating your own Mario character.

I have to say I think Super Mario Land 2 is amazing. It's definitely the best handheld Mario game by far and I love the different worlds. This game alone is why I want a gameboy virtual console on the DSI.

Just finished World 4, and found all Star Coins in Worlds 1 through 4. A few of them are really strategically hidden, and force you to think outside the box.

It's been said before by me and others in this thread, but at the halfway point now I feel compelled to repeat it-this game is better than NSMB DS in every way. Graphics (same general artstyle, but cleaner and more varied), music (a marked improvement, although not as classic/catchy as most of the old tunes, imo) and gameplay are all improved. Don't get me wrong, I more or less liked NSMB (100% completion 5 times) but this game just seems a lot more carefully designed.

Favorite level so far-
World 4's airship
.

Something small that caught my eye earlier-when jumping under one of the multi-coin blocks, Mario occasionally switched arms back and forth while hitting it. I don't remember seeing that in NSMB DS, if it was in there.

I have 99 lives, have not continued, and don't see myself doing so. There are still multiple opportunities for death and some clever, tricky platforming, so don't let that bother you that much. It's just really generous with the extra lives.

Yeah, I already have 18 lives at 1-3. And I have died about half a dozen times now. It’s not too difficult to get extra guys. But, I don’t think it detracts from the fun of the game at all. At least not for me.

BOOOOOOOOOOO..........
This is what Im talking about!!! Fix this Nintendo. If I have 99 Lives, does it matter if I even die? I mean you had to EARN lives in the early Mario games. In Mario 3, you had to win those mini-game match games..or it would be game over for good yo. Especially in world 8. I remember finishing the game with only 1 life left...so stressful.

I guess Mario World was the first to break this rule, but it totally takes away from the "suspense" of a level when you know you have another 99 tries ahead of you.

With the ability to save progress, and re-track cetain levels there is no reason why we should need so many lives.

I understand you like the greater challenge that way, and maybe they should make lives less common to come by. But one thing I did not like about the earlier Mario games is there was no saving, the guys you had to complete the game, that’s it. To some, they may like that, but for me it would just be frustrating. I am glad on that change, where you can actually save now.

Then I guess NSMB Wii perfected the idea of a "lift" item that doesn't make it possible to just fly over everything.

And, honestly, I approve of the direction that the designers took with the helicopter helmet.

no, I agree that you should be able to save. I just think that since you can save, there is no point of having 99 lives to begin with. There shouldn't be more then 1 or 2 1ups in a stage.

Not only does giving you so many green mushrooms make the game too easy, but it almost completely gives you NO incentive to collect coins.

We collected coins in SMB1, because we NEEDED those extra men. Not so much anymore.

If you don't like the helicopter, you can always go with the small mushroom. Lets you float over stuff without having to shake the Wiimote. You're much weaker though.

So, Berry and Gold. That's not too bad. Easy to remember.

By the way, I don't really get the lives/saving complaints yet. I'm coming from a bit of an action adventure point of view, and I can safely say I'm not at an age where I can have a nice afternoon sitting in front of the TV playing the same levels over and over again. The game is big enough that just a couple runs of the whole thing separately are enough. I still hunt for every coin and every life even if I'm maxed in World. I'm having more fun that way. I don't care about the effect of my actions about my lives.
