While it sucks we have to wait a few mor days, I have to disagree. This is pretty much a worldwide release. A few years ago we would have waited for month for this.

well, i actually started the game in co-op. played through world 1 and part of world 2 with my wife. then went back alone to get all the remaining star coins. then started another save file and completed all the same levels yet again in single player, getting all the star coins again.AniHawk said:And the thing is, that's just the game as a single player experience. It is that new and that crazy for just one person to play through it, to get every coin and clear every obstacle. Co-op makes it into a completely different beast. And that's not counting the two competitive modes.
I was thinking about this for a while. However, in the end, I think I still prefer Mario 3. It mostly has to do with the fact that, once you beat New SMB Wii, you don't progress in the game anymore, and that I always need an excuse to go into a level on my own.jarosh said:holy shit. i think... i think this might be the best 2d mario yet. the level design is just so fucking brilliant.

No luck here, and I've been trying for a while. My thought was that.there must be an alternate exit somewhere in the mini-fortress, because the icon for World 7 when you select a world has a huge vine as part of it, and there's room beside the fortress for a possible path to the right, maybe a vine going up into the clouds

And as for the hating the tilt controls, the world 7 fortress is an intense use of tilt and platforming all at once. Just nuts.

Not going to spoil how to get it, but I just thought I'd tell you that you're on the right track.Johnas said:Has anybody on their own figured out how to unlock World 7-6?

Also, apparently the methods for accessing the extra mushroom houses are different in single-player and multi-player? I played through in co-op first and it required the old "magic number" flagpole method (touch the flag when the last two digits match). In single-player, I guess you just have to rescue a toad?

But I gotta say that Nintendo is really lucky to be able to pump out a deluxe version of an 8-bit 2D platformer and have fans go ga-ga all over it. What would happen if EA or Activision tried to put out a 2D plaformer?

You could always just have the suicider press A after they get the coin. Puts them in the bubble, no life lost.I Push Fat Kids said:It completely changes the approach. I've been playing with my girlfriend who is much worse at the game than I but it's genuinely fun to figure how to utilize her in getting the coins, particularly when it sacrifices one of us :lol
I like it when there are coins suspended over a pit and neither person can get it and back up without dying. However, by entering the exit tube at the right time you can both pick up the coin and not lose a life. So awesome. There's probably easier ways to do it but it's very satisfying![]()

Henry Hatsworth was very well received. BCR as well. Shadow Complex is more of a platforming/shooter hybrid, but people still loved it.speculawyer said:The game looks cool and I'll probably get it eventually.

Finally on to World 8.
WIRED Frantic multiplayer, adorable character designs, lots of challenge.
TIRED Forced motion controls, imperfect single-player experience.
People would probably wonder what a plaformer is.speculawyer said:The game looks cool and I'll probably get it eventually.

But everything else about the game left me with conflicting emotions. I kept wavering between nostalgic joy and the sense that something was amiss. Upon hearing my initial impressions, one of the other editors commented that it sounded like I was describing an encounter with a childhood friend, and that perfectly describes my reaction to the game. It was a bittersweet experience because it dredged up so many fond memories but at the same time, I was left with the realization that things just aren't the same any more. Mario and I used to be the best friends but our paths had diverged and now, we're two completely different people. The game also had an oddly divisive effect on my expectations as well. My old school sensibilities left me ranting over things like the loss of flying privileges and Mario's new way of moving -- he walks like he's constantly on ice which I hate -- but my now matured tastes also left me railing against authentic holdovers like getting kicked out to the map screen after every death and having to fight the same boss multiple times. It got to the point where I almost gave up because I thought I was muddying the waters with my pseudo-mid-life crisis but then the light bulb went off in my brain: I was having a hard time figuring out what the game was supposed to be because the game didn't really know either.

In Mario 3's pipe world, there's one stage where you have to grab a starman and run across an entire level of invincible piranha plant type enemies, grab another starman before yours wears off, and keep running. If your starman wears off, then the remaining ? boxes that would have been holding more stars will just give you coins, and you're basically fucked over and have to retry.EzLink said:Wait, what? Don't listen to these other shmucks. A blind 4-player strike force run is the only way to play! Just make sure you aren't playing with people who are easily pissed off.taoofjord said:Would you guys recommend playing through this game multi or singleplayer for my first time through it?
