The Official Okami Thread of Awesome

I picked up the only non-preorder copy at the EB in the town where I work. They only had seven preorders and the one extra.

Won't be playing for a while, I'm sitting in my office at our elementary school open house, hoping that someone will come in and visit the lonely school psychologist.

Game is absolutely incredible, and everything I hoped it would be. What I was worried about the most - the combat - has been a non-issue. The combat's not uber-complicated, but there are enough subtleties and it's presented well enough to make me actually enjoy the battles. I like freezing the action and finding just the right angle for my Power Slash to hit three stupid ass monkeys at once, or making a slew of trees pop up around a group of enemies and then slapping the shit out of them with a mirror.

Moreover, there's so much soul, so much life in this game. It's fun, it's gorgeous and it puts me totally at ease. At one point, after feeding some monkeys, I just hung around and switched to first person, looked at the scenery and watched the monkeys slap their asses. I just sat there and took it all in, every time I look at the scenery it feels like I'm living inside a painting. And after I was done chilling with the tiny monkeys, I switched back to the default camera, and Ameterasu was curled up, lounging around just like I was.

This game is total bliss.

what's with the walls of text and talking in the game?
I hate the fact that I can't skip stuff

I'm gonna give it a 10 hour chance,, and if there is always talking talking unskippable, then i will return the game

I wouldn't replay a game over if I can't skip the talking

I will be picking this up soon. I am sort of backlogged now. Probably within a week or so. Loved the demo.

Same here. I was too tired from work to drop by EB, but I hopefully will tomorrow or Friday

Wow the intro was long/annoying :(

Voices need to be muted.

i agree.
but i'm running around helping the villagers and it's fun.
but as i was watching that intro, i kept wishing it would be over, and in my mind i was wondering what those folks who were hailing it as better than zelda were thinking.

Heh, this thread prompted me to start replaying the game again. I only played up until the Agata Forest, but I actually stopped to do everything this time (where as I rushed a bit more the first time). The game is still so very beautiful and this is the first time I really spent a lot of time playing it on my newer TV. Absolutely lovely even when stretched to fill the screen (looks almost natural). The colors are strikingly beautiful.

Out of curiousity, how did they handle those signs pointing the way to each area? I always thought it was a neat stylistic touch, actually, but it seems like it would look a bit odd written in English (too many letters). What did they end up doing?

I'm a chlid of the 80s, as well. But for some reason, unskippable in-game text and cutscenes have never bothered me.

It seems to me based on the first 4.5 hours that main plot text can't be skipped, but most sidequest/NPC/Issun text can be skipped.

Me neither. I would like it better if it moved at the speed that I read, but it really isn't a bad thing.

Does anyone know exactly what the game does differently when you choose Standard TV versus LCD TV in the display options?

I think LCD TV looks a little clearer on my AE900 projector, but I can't really tell why it would.

In any case, the game is gorgeous and looks absolutely gorgeous on the projector too. It must be the art style, because it's the first PS2 game I've played that I've liked the look of it on the projector.

Wait, there are standard and LCD display options, but nothing for widescreen?

Wtf is the purpose of all the food I have been collecting? My bag is full.

I encounted the guy in the village
who thinks he is the decendant of the warrior guy from the story.
I can tell already that him and I are going to get into some pretty zany adventures together.

when you die, it restores your health, from what I've come to understand (haven't died yet)

but the game is really great so far - it may start off a bit slow, but the visuals are so fresh that it doesn't bother me. At this point (about 2.5 hours in) it's really starting to pick up.

Hrm, I'm confused. Isn't Amaterasu a she? I recall folks mentioning that in the import thread too. I mean in the jp mythos. she was the sun goddess. Did Capcom change this domestically?

Too much exploring to do. I'm 5 hours in and am at the
dungeon part trying to find the dog.

I find myself exploring every facet of the game. Feeding those animals better be worth it!

But I just love the music and visuals when feeding the animals. This is the lucid dream I want!

I believe so, she is considered the mother of all.

They didn't change it. Many of the constellations refer to Amaterasu as "mother of all". But I do recall the senior localizer on the game saying they tried their hardest to make other characters who don't know better refer to Amterasu as gender-neutral pronouns (mutt, furball, etc.)

Just stopped playing since I have to get ready for bed(Just restored the Kamiki village, want to play more but I would play forever). But DAMN does this game look great. Looks amazing on my TV. I would take pics but I lent my sister my camera... damn

Hi, honey. I'm home!

So now me and Stay Puft are going to sit back and chill with Okami, and maybe use the art board to make dirty pictures.

I've just finished the first chapter.. and I'm getting used to the control scheme now. So far, pretty good.

Yes, intro was long and annoying. (no skip function ftl.) Camera movement is a bit too slow and loose for my taste - but after reversing the controls in both x-y axis, I finally got used to it. Pressing R3 is a little awkward way for me to reset it, but I can see myself getting used to, no problem.

Thick, stylized outstroke looks took a bit of getting used to. (looks pretty, but not as proficient of drawing 3D plane, but I guess that's the art-directior's choice, mimicking the 2 dimensional aesthetics of chinese/korean/japanese drawings, and it certainly adds some serious points to the atmosphere.)

There's no lock-on the enemy nor strafing unlike Zelda's z-targeting - but it's not too hard to hit an object/enemy due to generous collision recognition. Brush slashing, so far is pretty original. I'm excited to see how it unfolds, and how deep they would explore the brushing elements in this game.

And the voices. All the giberish is really annoying. They could have done much better with somewhat "Ico" or "Panzer Dragoon" ish alien-style languages, rather than those blib-blibs, or just put in Japanese words - all the names are in japanese, why not keeping the speech for authenticity? Those annoying blib-blibs somehow fails to add the "mythical" quality, although the intension is understandable. (or, perhaps they just didn't have room to add spoken language?)

Other than that, I'm enjoying the game very much, and I guess those niggles will be more apt to be ignored as I progress more, so I'm very hopeful.

So far, including the jumping fairy/artist thingie - this reminds me very much of Zelda's beginning, (almost to the point of semi-ripping off, but I guess following the good example is never bad, right?) sans annoying intro.

However, I'm having doubts that this game will really be able to hit the mass market like Zelda did - as it screams out "niche" all over with heavy Japanese amaterasu ookami references, and a bit too radical, if not arbitrary aesthetic choice for most people. (All the fav names from any games are gathered here - staring with Orochi, Yomigami, etc etc. ;)) Nevertheless, so far, very refreshing and good... and that's what the niche titles are supposed to do, anyhow... but not everyone, I don't think, will be able to overlook the initial premise of playing a god-wolf with brushing technique in oriental painting style artwork. I think this game will be one of those hardcore favorites, which would get overlooked by general.

Shame, if my worries are proven to be true. However, before calling someone "part of problem", having let down with this kinda situation in many occasions, I've learnd that it's not really worth to argue with. People will get what they want. I'm just grateful, that a game like this got ported over safe and soundly.

Wow, I put 6 hours into the game today (honestly didn't want to but my DSL went down) and I've been pretty amazed so far. The art style/graphics are mind blowing. It's amazing what devs are still pulling off on the PS2 hardware. The combat is easy, but it's very fun. The Celestial brush is pure genius and the game has such a great sense of adventure. So far my only qualms with the game are the gibberish voices in the beginning of the game and the slow text speed. Capcom are ****ing gods. I can't believe people weren't hyping this game more, it really deserves it.

The game's fantastic so far. I was worried about how it'd look stretched and on an HD set, but it actually looks pretty damn good so far. I only played it for less than 2 hours, can't wait to play more tomorrow...

I WENT TO 5 STORES TODAY AND STILL CAN'T FIND ****ING OKAMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >_<

ANYONE know how to make an offering? this is really bugging me.

Side Note: Capcom am awesome, they included a glossary in the manual of kanji they didn't translate throughout the game. Awesome! now all we need are FULL COLOR MANUALS

Just picked up my Buddha Board. This is one of the nicest preorder promo items Ive received for a game. Granted the "okamification" of it is cheap, the actual product is nice.

For someone who played the JP version, is Kushi Kushinada. My knowledge of Japanese mythology isn't great, but I have a very strong feeling they shortened her name (for some reason).
Also, there is a character that uses French phrases in the game
Waka, although from the intro card to his battle, I think his JP name is Ushiwaka
. For a game that seemed to try its hardest to maintain as much Japanese stuff, this is completely out of place, and really bothers me.

so much for finishing yakuza before okami comes out -- i played four chapters of yakuza and then went back to chromehounds :x

i'd better get cracking.

Well he spoke goofy modern English like Dante from DMC in the Japanese one, so what else were they gonna do?

Interesting. I wasn't aware that Dante spoke that way in DMC.

unique model for every character in game, thats what i like most about okami ( kinda hope zelda:tp could do the same, i really hate seeing the same npc model over and over again like in DQ8)

Ok...maybe it's just me but the....

Boss fight with the Spider Queen

just kicked this game up to 11. That was amazing. In fact that whole dungeon was awesome.

KB Toys. I work there, and you were lucky to find anything. The company wanted to totally drop video games last year, and most stores did. Then it was decided at a meeting last week to only carry Nintendo products next year...hold me.

I noticed at my Gamestop that there was only 1 copy left in the case other than the pre-orders. The guy said it had been selling well, but I think it was mainly people picking up their orders.

Played for almost 2 hours. I like this game, can't wait to get deeper into it.

Hilarious picking this up at Best Buy today though (go there for the $5 off coupons, I'm cheap like that. :D ). The dudes hadn't even heard of it. The guy who stocks their video game section was like "AKUMEE? I think we got something like that in, but I'd never heard of it so I put off stocking it until we had free time." Took his cohort 15 minutes to dig a copy up, but in that time I got a fun little game of pursuit force in and watched two rednecks spaz out playing Guitar Hero. :lol

6 hours in, just beat the first real boss.. this game just keeps getting better and better.

Btw if anyone is having trouble with the vine ability, make sure your brush cursor is green at the beginning AND end of your line, or it won't connect. Took me a while to figure that out..

Doing the ruins where you get the vine brush ability.

Holy shit.

This game isn't Zelda, but it's basically the next best thing.
True.

It's also getting me in the mood for Zelda. I'll probably have this finished by Tuesday. Then I'm playing through Ocarina of Time. Then Okami again, if I don't decide to go for an instant replay instead of Zelda in the first place.

Well as in they both use a lot of stupid "hip" phrases that are ten years outdated like "Yeah baby!"
Check out OoT, friend.

I haven't gotten here yet. I saved right before the boss (I assume... I went as far as I could after receiving the vine ability and there's a giant stone dome on a pillar I am saving for later), 4 hours and 45 minutes in. Next time I play this game it's going to be in a soundproof studio on a plasma screen with 10.1 surround sound on the best speakers and screen I've ever experienced in my life.

Exactly how the game was meant to be played : D

3 hours and I just left the village. This game gets me Right Here.

The jibba-jabba SUCKS though.

But everything else, and I mean everything else is a dream.
