Do I have to beat with Tempest, or does it matter?

yeah, aku listed them earlier in the thread.

later on Im gona do some score runs on challenge mode, I also need to do a 1 cred with any character bar Sensi, its cheating a little with that guy.

Anyone have any scoring/combo tips and how the hell do you get the x30 multiplier?

With Tempest. He's a really really good character.

Deflect slow moving bullets by flicking the shoot stick when they get close to you.
Press R2 trigger to change your gun style. With type B gun, it'll cause it to spray which works great against big waves of enemies.

Whoo 200/200 achievements.

Once you know where everything is, adjust your eyes to deal with those damned green balls, and figure how to use each character well, it's really not a hard shooter.

I just couldn't imagine doing it with Ruby.

I still don't know how some of you crackheads 1 credited this game on the second or third playthrough. :lol

I'm in bed, sick, with a 100+ fever and I did it on my second try.. it's really easy. Now I just have to figure out which weapon I like with Tempest. All of his options sort of suck.

I wrote up a bloggle after my first time playing .. my impressions really haven't changed. It's really fun, the scoring system seems interesting and I love the music ... it's just not really challenging.

Man, I'm still stuck on Stage 2. I can get through stage 1 without dying easily but those chained orb things in the later parts for stage 2 always fuck me and I'm like guaranteed to die on the the boss.

Dunno if it'll help, but I struggled with the stage 2 boss because I was always trying to run away from the "feathers" that he shoots. Once I sucked it up and realized I could shoot my way through the feather barrage instead of dodging, it got a lot easier.

When he goes for the feathers, just try and put some distance between you and the boss, so that his shots will spread out a little bit, and you should be able to blast right through them. This is with Ruby, btw, I can't speak for the other chars yet.

I try to kill them fast, and never be afraid to use a bomb.

I hate you hardcore shooter fans. :D

I've got to the last boss with every char now on my first life... and died right near the end when he goes nuts. =(

Oh, those. It won't do anything for your score, but what I do is rush to the right-hand side of the screen, go up top and just knock them off as quickly as I can. You just aim for the glowing parts until they fall off the stage completely. If they spam too many of those gas balls, just use the escape tech (LB/RB) and get out.

I've got to the last boss with every char now on my first life... and died right near the end when he goes nuts. =(

When you get to the point where he has both the meteors and the big glowing balls at the same time, he's typically dead enough to be killed with one bomb. Other than that, the meteors are really easy to dodge and when you just have the giant balls to worry about, hide up in one of the corners and fan the area with bullets. They're REALLY easy to knock around, so nothing should get near you.

For those complaining about the lack of challenge, I do believe that is why the Arcade++ was inserted in the game in the first place, has that been tried out yet?

too challenging for me ;)

I just got most of the way through stage three for the first time, I'm not great at this kind of game but I'm really enjoying it so far.

How do people decide which gun is the best to use?

For Ruby, I've noticed that nothing rips apart enemies like Type A level 3. I haven't played enough with Tempest to judge his weapon set.

Oh I'm not complaining, I think its perfect. Easy enough that I can do it in one credit, hard enough that I have to be trying my best to do so.

Well I've finally 1cc'd the game. What does 1cc stand for btw? One credit, no continues?

Well that's what I did. This is the most non-cheap, non-frustrating shooter I've ever played. Once I figured out Boss 3's bullshit, and that you can off Boss 4 with two bombs.

God I wish this was a fleshed out, 40$ game with 8 levels and extras. Ah well it's awesome while it lasts. Now Bring on Raiden 4, Ikaruga, TriggerHeart Exelica, and Rez!

So it figures that now that I unlocked freeplay I can beat it without continuing. Did it with R.A.D. on my first try with her. Got 203 on the leaderboard with 3.1M points. Also I'm pretty sure I can beat the first level without getting hit, I'll need to try ++ mode.

I'd happily buy levels for this as DLC.

Oh, and this game is so not a 4.

My shooter skills have atrophied much in the years; once upon a time I could beat Thunder Force III on the hardest setting without dying, but those days are apparently far, far behind me. :lol

I have tried six times now to beat the second level and can't do it. It's such a sharp jump from the first and I can't seem to adjust. But it's hard for reasons that make it not fun: the worm takes up so much of the screen that if I'm in the wrong quadrant when it shows up, I take tons of damage. Huge enemies leap onto the screen at multiple points, so if you are in that half of the screen, down goes the life meter. It's less about skill and reflexes and more about knowing to avoid large chunks of the screen when the "boo" monsters pop up. The first level had many of those moments with the robot jumping in, but I memorized those parts quickly because it, well, was the first level. But now that it's clear that this tactic is a major component of the game, I'll pass.

I can tell that I'm not as good at these kind of shooters as I used to be, but I have no interest in memorizing levels like that. Great visuals and art style (the second level reminds me of the valley level from Panzer Dragoon Orta, which is a GOOD THING), but it's just too frustrating for me. Shooters like Heavy Weapon, where memorizing the levels are not essential but strategy and reflexes are, are more my flavor.

Almost able to beat it now with Tempest. Can do no death stage 1/2 and getting better at stage 3, but stage 4 is screwing me over a lot as I'm learning it. Tempest is really really fun.

But yeah, I have no idea how I will do this with Ruby, some of the parts like the stage 2 dragon thing when you're inside in the small area and bullets are coming from every direction; that works with tempest because of the reflect but with ruby? ^^; Might need to wait until I get 8 credits or free play for her.

Played it, bought it, have one question. What's the point of using the big green guy? It just seems like the girl is way better than him.

This game is fantastic, but easy (I'm a pretty seasoned shooter player, however). That said, the additional modes like Arcade++ and the challenge modes more than make up for that. I just love so much about it and wish the tutorial did a better job of explaining some of the finer points of how to play the game effectively.

Also, if you want to unlock Sensei easily and don't like playing with Tempest, get to the end boss with another character, die, then continue with Tempest and beat the game. Sensei should be unlocked as long as you beat the final boss with Tempest.

Once I unlocked the
retro mode and checked it out, this became one of my favorite shooters in recent memory. So much fun. I love the visuals and the tinny MIDI music.

Good times.

What's the point of using the girl?

The big guy is basically invincible for the entire game as long as you avoid physically running into enemies or getting hit by the green colored shots. Just keep flicking the right stick instead of holding it and not a single bullet will touch you the entire game. That's ...useful. I can't see how the girl can compare at all.

One really lame thing about this game is that if you play it offline, the game freezes when you finish, since it literally won't let you continue without connecting to LIVE to upload your score.

It just throws itself into an infinite loop of connection messages, and there's no way out but to cold-stop the Xbox.

Dumb.

I'm all for LIVE integration, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. They need to consider that sometimes you'll be offline for the future.

Other than that, good game.

Oh, come on, it's nowhere near that bad. Just don't hang out near the edges of the screen (which is something you should never do in any shmup), and pay more attention; the snake pops his head in and stays there for a second or two before launching.

Ruby can destroy the snake. Level 3 Type A and a bomb and you're set. Just aim for the head whenever it pops in and you'll destroy it before it really starts filling the screen with bullets.

Psychotext said:
Is R.A.D. basically Ruby but moves a bit faster?
And with a bit slower aiming, yes.

Hm...really? I'll have to try that out.

If you know the pattern of the snake, you can get through most of it with just dodging, though. There's one section where you need to do the left-bumper flip through a hail, but other than that it's fine as long as you have Level 3 weapons.

I just can't seem to pass the second stage. I can get the stage two boss to around 15% health and then I die... argh!

Does the game give you two credits for every hour of play or is it just a one time thing? It gave me a message that I played for 60 minutes and gave me two extra credits. Maybe if I play for ten hours or something I'll have enough credits.... :lol

I'm not very good at the bullet dodging stuff and I can get past the snake without losing any energy on Ruby. I suppose it just comes with practice.

Picked this up Friday night.. XBLA needs more shmups. I voted with my money.

Definitely worth it.

No online coop really sucks.. but what can ya do, I didn't wanna miss out in protest :lol

I hadn't figured out how to deflect shots with Tempest, but knowing that, it's probbly going to be a lot easier.

I'm sure you all already know... but if you spin the right stick with Sensei he'll do a move where his sword spins around him. Useful if you're stuck in the middle of a hail of bullets.

Apart from fighting games, shmups is the genre I suck at the most. I can only reach Stage 4 with 5 credits using Ruby. Can't wait till I unlock the 8 credits thing though I have a feeling by the time I've played enough to get 8 credits, I'm probably good enough to pass with 5 anyway. -_-

wonder how its going down in the shmup circles? or if its pulled people back, nice to see its doing so well on GAF but past that guess the rest will be word of mouth.

Anyone know leaderboard new numbers?

I can't believe there's someone bitching about the amount of memorization this game requires.

You know her grappling hook wipes out enemy bullets, right? Make a habit of firing it regularly and it'll take out most enemy fire, making it really easy to dodge what's left. She also destroys enemies much faster than Tempest. I couldn't beat the stage 3 mini-bosses using him. None of his weapons seem as strong as Ruby's Type-A. Maybe I should have been using more bombs.

WHOA. HOW.

(Man this game is so rad.)

This game is so worth my money.

It's hard at first but I'm definitely getting better slowly.

Been using Tempest with Type B (ice beam?) or is it Type C... anyway, it's the one that looks like he's spraying green shit over everything. :lol

First shooter with a bukakke character, especially Tempest's mercury looking ice balls. :lol

Using Tempest after Ruby really fucks me up. All three of his weapons seem godawful, but I've been neglecting Type C.

And holy crap, I didn't realize how useful the ++ modes are until now.
