The Original Shoot-Em-Up Omega Five Official Thread

And holy crap, I didn't realize how useful the ++ modes are until now.

I just started playing this game tonight. What do the ++ modes do?

I couldn't beat the stage 3 mini-bosses using him. None of his weapons seem as strong as Ruby's Type-A. Maybe I should have been using more bombs.

Hmmm...I found his Type-A good enough. Was fine for the mini-bosses (no bombs) and everything else in the game. Type-B seemed generally the same but I've never really messed around with it much. I hate his Type-C because it's slow on the R trigger attack is really slow and seemingly useless.

Yeah, everyone here seems to like Tempest a lot but I do much worse with him than I do with Ruby. Maybe it's because I've just played a lot with Ruby (love her Weapon B).

And I don't get Tempest's "reflect" bullet ability. I mean, you can shoot at the bullets and they turn green and appear to slow down slightly, but aren't really "reflected." I guess what I'm asking is, is there more to that ability/how do I use that ability to my advantage?

Wow Sensei is awesome. I've been using 6 or 7 credits to finish the game, but first attempt with Sensei, got to the end guy on one credit and almost killed him.

Alright, so I just wanted to post that I went ahead and bought Omega Five last night. My girlfriend walks into the living room and says "wait a minute, did you buy this game?? oh god..." then not even five minutes later an XBL note comes in from my friend down the street "please don't tell me you bought Omega Five!"

So now of course I'm feeling kind of stupid and slightly unsure of my purchase. But when I asked them, "have you ever played Forgotten Worlds, Ikaruga, Einhander, Atomic Robo Kid, Gradius, Life Force, or R-Type?" and their response was, "huh?", is when all my doubts were cast aside.

Please can someone help me out on a few things?

- How do you get more lives/continues/credits? I start off with three and never seem to get any more.

- Why is your score only tracked for your last continue/credit? I scored over a million on my first, and expected it to carry that score through to the leaderboard but it didn't :(

- What does the anchor actually do? I'm using it, and have the 15 second achievement, but don't know what help it's actually doing.

Please, hope someone can offer some answers. Thanks!

After 1 hour of play you get 5 credits, then after 3 hours you get 8, then a few hours after that it becomes unlimited.

It's pretty standard for arcade games (usually they add 1 point every time you use a continue, or reset the score to zero or 1).
If you want to upload a score, you need to let the timer run out when you die. When you unlock Sensei, finishing in one credit isn't tough.

2 functions:
-It locks your aiming, so you can move around without having to manually adjust your aim. Makes killing tougher enemies much easier.
-It destroys enemy bullets.

Could somebody please explain me how the RT move with Tempest works? i don't get it... :/

Type A: Changes the direction of the fire attack, homing onto enemies and it can also shoot behind you.
Type B: Spreads out the acid so you can hit more enemies at once.
Type C: Shoots in all directions, and will destroy any enemy bullets nearby.

Perfect! You've been a great help, thanks!

I hated this game when I first tried it. Now I can't get enough of it!

Wait a minute... you asked your girlfriend that? :D

Same here. I wasn't a huge fan of the demo, but free Spacebucks from Fox last night gave me the courage to pick it up, and it's grown on me.

Yeah, she's a gamer. She's more hyped about Resistance 2 than I am.

LOL, whenever I try to talk up a new shmup, my friends always say "ohhhhhh, it's like Space Invaders." =P
That's exactly what my friend said last night. "it's like Space Invaders but with unresponsive controlling characters".

So evidentially, our friends played Space Invaders back in the 80's, skipped every 2D shooter in existance for the last 30 years, and wen't straight to Omega Five.

Still chipping away at Stage 4. My largest pet peeve with the console shmup genre, even though I love them, is that practice mode for a stage only opens up when you've beaten it and not when you get to it.

What this means is that by getting to the last stage or some really tough stage, you're able to perfect your run through the previous stages in practice mode, learning them until you get do no-credit or no-hit runs. But then the stage you're stuck at still requires you to play 30 mins of game, learn a little of the tough stage, die, play 30 mins of game, learn a little more of the tough stage, die, repeat until you actually learn the entire level and that's assuming that each new time through you LEARN things and aren't getting hit at the same spots.

On stage 4 how do you even kill the lasers on the trains before they hit you with Tempest? I can't seem to do enough damage. I can dodge most of the green shots coming off, but I can hit over and over again by the laser beams and lose a lot of life.

Just finished a session where I unlocked infinite continues (not that I need them now), and retro mode, and also 1 credited with Sensei. Retro mode rocks, looks just like one of those Sega CD FMV titles.

Love this game, best XBLA game yet!

Nice to hear the game is good, I want to buy it but my internet just got capped to DIAL UP speed untill friday, the isp I have to use in these uni flats are awful for what I pay (£20 a mo)

How do you unlock retro mode? Is that after a 1cc with sensei? I can't stand playing him because of his stupid attack sounds.

Found some videos on YouTube for anyone who sucks as much as me... you might find some new methods and stuff.

Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Boss Guide (all 4 boss fights)
Untouchable Achievement

Too bad I can't find a stage 4 video since that's the one I'm stuck on. I can make it to the start of the level 4 (with like 2 credits or so) but then I die really quickly. I'll have to try and play for five hours to unlock the infinite credits.

lol, I did the exact same thing, searching youtube for stage 4 videos only to find those. Same thing happens to me, get there around 2 credits and die real fast. Not at 8 credits yet so maybe that'll help or maybe I'll need to keep going until infinite.

Odd.

I failed to be arcade mode long enough to get 8 credits.

...But the first time I played it with 8 credits, I 1cc'd it with Ruby. Maybe it's because I realized the power of Ruby's Level 3 Weapon A.

I was having a tough time with this game (dying on level two) until I read that Tempest can deflect bullets, that really changes everything.
I wish there was a way to switch characters mid-game. I do better as Ruby on level one, Tempest on two and three, and then Ruby on four.
And for some reason I only like the B guns for both characters, but I'm not sure if it's because that's what I'm used to or because they're actually better.

Hmm. I've 1cc'd with everyone now (well, I still need to do R.A.D., but whatever) and I still haven't gotten the free play, so I guess I'm still under 5 hours. I'm not sure what everyone's having so much trouble with.

I really wish I had a video capture capability of some sort to just make up some quick videos (that youtube link earlier in the thread is pretty bad), but I'll try my best to just give general hints instead.

1) Like a lot of shooters, dying is sort of a double-whammy since your guns are going to be crap upon resurrection. I know it doesn't really help to say "just stay alive," but you'll find it really helps to hang on when you can instead of viewing your 3 (or however many) lives as one big energy bar. Know where all the health regeneration points are, there's a lot of them! This can really help you to focus on a comeback if you make some mistakes early on.

2) For the record, I use:
Ruby/RAD: Type B
Tempest: Type B

I'm not sure why anyone would use other weapons, but apparently some people do.

- Realize that Ruby's little probe/latcher thing can eat bullets, shoot it at any incoming fire you can to reduce dodging needs.
- I don't like to use bombs unless necessary, they are more useful as shields in most cases, and there are several areas where you can use them to destroy ships while concentrating fire on other places if you have all three.
- Don't forget the little bumper-flip move for Ruby in a pinch. You only lose a very little bit of health, it is always better to use this than to actually take a lump from pretty much anything in the game.

3) Everything always happens in exactly the same way. Don't try to beat this game on sheer reaction times or innate ability, just memorize what happens in the hard parts and use that knowledge to easily take care of things. If you already know what's going to happen, it isn't that hard to deal with.

4) For stage 4, (this seems like the one most people have trouble with?) try memorizing where the snake/trains are coming from (first one comes from the top, second from the right, etc) and shooting right at the head the moment they appear on the screen. Destroying them immediately is your highest priority on this stage.

As mentioned before, dying will make destroying things in time very difficult on this stage, so losing one life will start avalanching with others.

I usually just use bombs on the very last section where the four vertical snakes with lasers go by since the stage 4 boss is so easy anyways. That's probably the hardest part anyways. There's two life-restoring pellets at the end if you've already used your bombs, though, so it's not a big deal.

For the mid-bosses, realize you can go around the ship and shoot from the rear when he does his gun-shooting. Makes it faster and you totally avoid the bullets.

5) Just FYI, you can position yourself so that you start inside the "square" of the first boss' opening formation and blow a bomb to do massive damage. You'll probably take a hit on the way out, but it's a small price to pay to just get this easy time-waster out of the way that much quicker, imo (for those sick of plowing through stage 1 just to get a shot at later stages, etc)

Other than that, I really don't know what to say.

Hope someone can at least find a part of that useful in some way. Good luck!

Damn it took me forever just to get to the stage four boss with Ruby and Tempest, after unlocking Sensei I got there in my first game.

With Ruby Type A is better in certain situations as it does more damage. If there's a solid floor and ceiling Type B is the best bet, if you're out in the open like most of level 2 then Type A is better.

People actually like Tempest?

I have two more achievements (Tempest and Samurai 1cc), but I don't care to get them. I'm too busy chasing high scores on my friends leaderboards.

Yes, so glad to see Omega 5 at number 1. :D Hopefully, this will convince other publishers to bring more both horizontal and vertical shooters to Live Arcade.

Why wouldn't you like a character where you don't have to DODGE BULLETS? It's one less thing to worry about while dodging everything else.

Finally beat the game yesterday with Ruby... AWESOME.

And R.A.D... WOW, she's a pure blast to play with!!

Best Live Arcade game ever after Lumines IMHO.

Let's not get too excited yet, guys. The latest game is almost always the #1 game for that week. The real test is next weeks list!

Its twice as easy to beat the game with Tempest (and like 100x with Sensei). Anytime a bullet gets near you, just flick it away with the right stick and cause huge damage. Use weapon type B and hit the R button to make it shoot in a wide spray so you can hit many enemies at once.

Sensei, well he's just ridiculous. His blade can go through walls, it destroys normal AND green bullets and he's tiny as hell.

Ruby's satellite is plenty effective for wiping bullets away. It's not quite as relaxed and easy as Tempest's field, but the firepower makes up for that.

This game doesn't throw a whole lot of the standard bullets around, either.

Well, with Boogie Bunnies as the sole release this week, I can't fathom Omega Five dropping all that much in a weeks time.

A few weeks back we saw Gripshift at #3 and then dropped off the list. Omega 5 being #1 is a good reason to celebrate.

Look at TRON, that hit number 3 this week and I doubt it will last too long on the list.
