That's the part I really can't get my head around, how can they mess it up so badly.
I mean shit the thing is most likely end up being 2nd best console ever sold but those user purchases don't carry over properly.
Don't want to be hyperbolic about it, but I'm having issues to how they couldn't have had a better solution when it should be more important than BC for Xbox.
You guys need to pay attention. PS5 is natively backwards compatible with PS4. That means most games will run 1:1 with how they run now. However, if you expect any of those games to run better or "boosted", then that category of games will be approximately the 100 most played games.

What the fuck just happened? I missed it but looking at the specs, I expected FUCKING MOREEEE.
What the fokk for? PS4/XBO games already looked stellar, and now the devs have 10x the processing power... we will be shitting into our trousers and wouldn't want to change them because our brains were already fried :D.

Even acknowledging going in this was going to be a very arcane presentation primarily aimed at developers to replace GDC, this was a rather lukewarm presentation.

-No visual technical demos from any of their first party studios and how they're using the tech,
-No actual console design or controller talk. Which is odd after hearing about the recent patents specifically highlighting the new Dualshock features.

PS5 doesn't even seem like an actual tangible product yet when compared to how Microsoft have been presenting the Series X.
This thing doesn't even feel like it's actually coming out this year.

Well, at the very least we no longer have to deal with bullshit insiders and constantly changing rumors regarding specs.

Why is everyone sure that Xbox series x will be $100 more than the ps5? The cost for manufacturing their systems on a chip are about the same. Sony just made a very stupid design decision going with 36CU instead of 52 or higher. The cost of the materials between the two are said to be the same, in fact, one source said PS5 materials actually cost more than XBox Series X. Running at higher clock speeds will make the system cost more, need for more elaborate cooling, etc.

Far far from salty. Not everyone is like you and the rest of the pathetic clowns on here

I OWN ALL PLATFORMS. Go to sleep
What’s with the ad hominem remark? I own them all too. You sound tough in your posts I bet you are some twink in real life you cookie cutter porn addict.

Sticking to the topic. Yeah ps5 I’m in day one.

OK tbh, this is what I really wanted to see, you guys have heard me say several times that the breakdown is what's more interesting to me than just the TF number.

I find the TF and CU power could be higher, but it seems they went really high end on the cooling solution for the worse case scenario, the most stressful gpu+cpu call..... 2.23ghz is really high and I'm really curious how high it can run uncapped, that part was really fascinating to me.....

I think they went all out on sound, this should be really impressive in games, should be a tangible upgrade over PS3 audio which I dearly missed....

All in all, it sounds like a very easy console to develop for, that's a great thing.... I think the custom engineering and its strengths will be quite noticeable, but I do wish their clocks were higher and they had more ram..... I suspect this will be a $399 console again..as opposed to a $500 console, but we shall see...

The way Cerny speaks, it's still a work in progress on many fronts till launch day, so the upcoming information and reveals should be interesting.
But tell us what you truly feel

I guess I’m one of the weird ones who likes this kind of tech discussion. Why did people find it so bad? I guess people wanted to see games and the like but that ssd and system speed is going to be king. I’ve been saying it all along the ps5 ssd is the key to their graphics strategy and this is just awesome. 10TF yeah it could be better and I am disappointed they didn’t go with a larger number because more power - better game’s but I feel like a large amount of the custom work Sony have put into designing an efficient system probably make up the difference.

I loved that cheeky little comparison to an imaginary 48CU system hahaha.

Alas, it’s going to be a shit storm on forums for a while.

30 minutes in and honestly this guy cant speak for shit. Its absolute unwatchable. His rambling about hardware information nobody cares about for these 30 minutes is god awful, and that voice almost feels like he's talking to you like a toddler.

Finally some real information.

CPU downclocks and gpu downclocks. GG its not even 10 tflops and its not even 3,5ghz cpu speed.

Men they got checkmated by microsoft.

zapped forwards as its 20 minutes of audio rambling can't watch it further.

Microsoft going for the jugular this next gen. The Xbox series x will NOT be more expensive than PS5. it doesn’t cost any more to manufacture so why would it retail for more? They both have similar ram, systems on a chip that cost similar to manufacture (more CUs doesn’t meant it costs more to manufacture, not by much, Sony just made a very stupid design decision), etc. if anything, the PS5 looks to have more expensive SSD and cooling. No way will MS let Sony underprice them.

It had a throwaway line about devs can choose to implement it or not and that was about it for RT.
Sounds like Xbox Series X’s implementation fo ray tracing is more advanced. MS said their solution offloads raytracing completely from the GPU, costing no GPU resources while Cerny said the PS5s used A surprisingly small amount of GPU resources.

The one good thing about that 10.2 Tflop number is its getting there by using higher clock speeds over just more compute units at slower speeds which will offer better performance
LOL, what does that even mean? in the end, Series X can throw many more polygons one the screen than PS5. How each console gets there doesn’t matter. If anything, you want the lower frequency, high CU console, not the one with lower CUs running at very high clocks and high temperature.

I've been watching your posts...certainly a slant to them. Good luck with that, it appears the load time is all that you've got as you keep hammering this home.
No, not necessarily. I believe the PS5 will be faster in more than that sense.... it will deliver the Tflops faster and will have less bottlenecks than the XBox. The audio looks like it will be way ahead also....

I'm still disappointed with the presentation and the fact that X will be ahead in raw power, it is a marketing blow more than a practical one.

I think Jim Ryan is shit at his job, the presentation appeared amateurish and had nothing for average people...compared to the Xbox reveal which was way way way sharper and more flashy. I dunno what is going on at PlaySTation but it isn't good since Ryan took over.

I am actually considering getting an X in addition to the PS5 now. I don't say that lightly.

the way he speaks and delivers is abysmal , I was looking forward to this reveal and it was a borefest. not because of specs but because of how it was delivered. cardboard cut out people was just stupid.

the thing with the gpu+cpu clockrates is that's at best possible scenario and most likely will not run at that most of the time. there are some good things about the reveal which were good like how the ssd will work, the sound bit was interesting but I am betting most people will listen to the games through the tv speakers or sound bars so no idea how it will make a massive difference to that

Series X is bottlenecked and will have significant load times compared to PS5. Don't worry!
Lol, just the opposite. Series X looks more optimized than PS5. It looks like an amazingly well thought out console. Hell, just compare the bandwidth of the two, Series X has like 20% higher bandwidth.

It’s funny in here tonight reading the comments. I watched both the Series X DF release and this. Where’s the XBox lead architect up on stage talking the crowd through the design choices which led to the overall design? All we got was Richard shoving some bits of plastic and metal together into a plastic box (I’m a DF fan btw). No soul from MS, no passion - why? Cerny’s talk was much more engaging. Possibly cos they’re keen to point out the plusses rather than focus on the lack of raw computational capacity - for whatever that’s worth. Still no games on display from either party which was a shame. Interesting taster from both but hardly conclusive on who’s going to win the generation despite what the ranging, frothing, forum whores would have you believe. I can almost taste the salt from both ends whilst typing....

Since both Sony and Microsoft offered mid-generational upgrades during the xbox one/ps4 generation, I'll be getting the Xbox Series X at launch and then the PS5 Pro when that launches as the more superior console. Probably going to keep doing one launch base console and one mid-generational console and alternate between the brands for as long as console lifecycles will exist.

We will have to see when they come out, TBH I am extremely pissed with PlayStation at the moment and just considering buying a PC..... I don't understand why they are so incompetent and allowed that idiot, POS Jim Ryan to take over and turn everything to crap....

If they don't start turning things around soon, I'm out till they get somebody new.

That’s not a bad idea, Actually. Might do the same. Buying both at launch when I play mostly 3rd party titles makes no sense

I feel they didn't care about tera flops or hardware specifications
I feel they are on advantage on SSD usage for games development specially open world games if we use it then draw distance and easy access files for easy development on games

i feel the aim of ps5 is speed with sound superiority
meanwhile on xboxsx is power with technical marvel on console standard

Loved the spec analysis and almost to the bone explanation of the parts going inside the box.. I can understand how the ADHD crowd was getting distracted, since there wasn’t any loud sounds or flashing lights :p

so we got the specs for this console.. a little less than maybe what we wanted, but not so little that it won’t be a good jump from last gen. Also feel like Sony has taken into consideration the diminishing returns of graphical improvements and tried to look at other areas where things could improve :)

only thing left to get out of this thread, is finding out, how many of the XBots, is actually just one persons alt accounts.. 😜
if there was one thing that was boring about This presentation, it was how predictable this thread would be, to read through.. but GG WP system warriors :)

To be fair to Cerny, that is the way he talks. He's more of a storyteller who will drag out something for 10 minutes. Can't blame him for that, since everyone has their own style of presenting.

The problem is it seems he's the only tech guy at Sony, so if someone is going to detail specs it's got to be him, or nobody.

What they could have done is do more an MS thing with SeX with splash videos, DF guys adding videos, doing some basic demos like loading time and RTX.

Instead they got Cerny to do a GDC chat with really detailed stuff like John Carmack detailing idtech for an hour, and Sony promoted this presentation for everyone to watch, not just tech heads who probably appreciate the meticulous detail more than an average gamer.

I am a tech head and it was dull, yes better videos to demonstrating things. why didn't they show the Spiderman load times that we have all seen on here to show how good the ssd is, why use bare basic wireframes to demonstrate how corridors work for helping stream the data. use what they have shown in private and proper showcase the console to show how good these specs are.

they turned what should of been amazing look at new tech into a borefest. I think the ps5 looks like an amazing piece of kit but good god deliver it better for us techies to

You totally misunderstood what I said. I'm not talking about Xbox Series X.

I'm saying if 10.2 Teraflops was Sony's target then they get better performance getting 10.2 Teraflops by boosting frequancies instead of using more compute units and slower speeds. Meaning they could have just added 48 Compute units and dropped the speeds to hit 10.2 Tflops, but then they would actually lose performance and would make the GPU die even bigger.

Going further, it was likely cheaper for Sony to boost speeds and use an improved cooling solution than ask AMD to make a bigger chip to get to 10,2 TFlops.

How hard can it punch compared to the XsX?
Raw Tflops, XSX is stronger, more TU's...….Sound, Storage. Ease of development......Sony is stronger....Give me a bit to go over the video again, I was at work when it was revealed, I missed the first few minutes, need to take it all in and try to soak in all the details......I still need to go over what they said on memory bandwidth and RT...

Cerny said that in all operations PS5 will stay at that clockrate and number unless it doesn't require that amount of power for the operation......In essence PS5 games will always use the full power, BC may not need to....The cooling system deals with such things on the fly.....based on power needs...

If the structure of this presentation was Jim Ryan’s idea, I think he should be fired. This is amateur work here. I’m not at all bothered by the specs. I believe because of the way the pS5 is build, it will punch much higher then it’s weight class (hoping ) but it just looked really weird, right down to the use of a CG crowd. Like what was that all about?!

PS systems are a lot more mainstream than Xbox. They sell a lot more. And the best way to keep up unit sales is a reasonable price. So that's why Sony didn't gun for the best specs.

On the plus side, I can see it being $400, which is the price Sony likes to top out at now. No more $500-600 PS3 stuff. PS4 and PS4 Pro started at $400 and were ideal prices.

I feel ya, and I hope youre right. But didn’t we learn, with the PS3, that asking devs to jump through special hoops for multiplat games, hoops that the other guy can just brute force through or be easily coded for, doesn’t work out in the long run?

It’s supposed to be for GDC. With the backlash they’re getting they really need to show off games in the next week or 2.
