The silliest names in games

Absolutely fantastic visual design though.

And Ghetsis' from B2W2's hard mode was an absolute bitch.

Well "Cofagrigus" didn't factor into the design at all since it was his dub name, and I assume the Pokemon are given Japanese names first and it goes from there.

He is rubbish...

Say what you will about the design, but there's nothing wrong with the name. It's a nice, simple pun like you'd find in Generation 1.

You bring up Gundam in a silly name thread, and the first example you pick isn't Quattro Vagina? For shame

To be fair Quattro Bajeena is a fake name, not a real one...technically Full Frontal is presumably the same and I'm pretty sure it may have intended to be a slight throwback to that given the circumstances.

And this makes it less silly how? If anything, the fact that someone chose to call themselves that makes it even sillier

Well, technically his name is supposed to be Quattro Bajeena, it's only after being roundtripped through katakana by people who know just enough english to be dangerous that it turns into that.

Lets be honest, we all know what it was actually meant to be. I'd assume Bajeena was either poor english spell on the Japanese side (happens a lot honestly) or an attempt to tone it down in bringing it over

If it was written in katakana in the first place, that means it was meant to be a word from a foreign language, given that that's the entire point of katakana

Exactly. It's such a horrible name that no one would suspect it was a name someone purposefully chose for themselves.

Cofagrigus.

I have NO CLUE what TPCI, or whoever decides upon the dub names, was thinking. I mean, it's a mummy Pokemon, it shouldn't be that hard to come up with a simple pun for that. The Japanese name is the pretty cool デスカーン, usually romanticized as Deathkan meaning "death coffin".

But no, we get COFAGRIGUS, a name so bad it even originally set off the censor and couldn't be traded online! I guess the pun is "coffin" plus "egregious" as people speculate, and should be pronounced sort of like "sarcophagus", but it's clunky as fuck and there's no way someone can look at this name and think, yes, that's what we'll name a creature in a series with mass market appeal.
Sarcophagus - ph + f - a + i (jumbled) = that^?

Guybrush Threepwood for me but I've never played the games. Just doesn't roll off the tongue too well.

Edge Maverick.
Edge. Maverick.
EDGE FUCKING MAVERICK.

I know this only starts a whole other argument about Star Ocean, but the cheesy "tryhard" character names make sense with SO3's revelation that
the entire universe exists inside an MMO.

I personally enjoy the twist and how it frames the world and directly addresses the player, but most people seem to completely miss the point of the swerve and scream that
"Nothing mattered,"
when the entire point of the idea was that everything
legitimately happened and it's supposed to be a big "screw you" the the kind of people who would take the twist in a knee-jerk "I need to be angry about something" sort of way.

It's one of my favorite twists because the people who decry it are exactly the sort of people it's suppose to be subverting, but they don't have the self-awareness or willingness to explore the concept to realize it.

It basically a direct attack on "complaining about games I didn't want to have to think about." And I find that amazing that it still "works" to this day.

That said: Star Ocean 4 was TERRIBLE.

Ugh every name in Destiny

The Traveler
The Speaker
The Reef
The Hive
The Fallen
The Awoken
The Cabal
The Citadel
The Nexus
The Archive

...notice a trend here?
Seriously I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

The new trend in sci-fi/fantasy worldbuilding is to be as vague and general as possible, then, when your fanbase fills in the gaps with theories and idea, you appropriate one of them and claim it was your "vision" all along.

It's crowdsourced fiction.

Roll Fizzlebeef.

But seriously, 90% of Final Fantasy games have atrocious names. Rinoa Heartilly? Lightning? Cloud Strife? It's like they let some 12-year old girl make up these names.

I just remember this-
The name of the villain in Lost Dimension is The End.
Literally The End

One of the lines of dialog in the game is even '...dastardly The End!'
Like you couldn't ahve just called him Omega?

Japan pls....

Guybrush Threepwood for me but I've never played the games. Just doesn't roll off the tongue too well.

The silliness of his name is constantly referenced in the Monkey Island series so it's supposed to be kinda dumb.
Although the actual name "Guybrush" takes its origins from placeholder file name of his in-game sprite.
