The Spoony Experiment

How come whenever i watch spoony or other channel awesome videos on ipad i never get ads?
Not that its such a bad thing, but its sucks that im not actually supporting their shows.

Catching up on "To Boldly Flee", and I had no idea how big of a part Spoony had in it. Makes the whole rape-jokes/firing even more awkward. Haven't watched Spoony's stuff regularly since FFX, mostly because I dislike the counter-monkey stuff and his vlogs. Oh well.

Agreed he has such a big part in Bold Flee that his departure from them just feels more odd now. Still i've been enjoying it though.

I'm making a thread once every part is out.

And I'm not watching until all the parts are out want to watch it as a movie.

Sigh. What a nostalgic day. These spoony videos, my rewatching of The New Adventures of Captain S, and some of the old Game Heroes podcasts, man... time flies, and nothing lasts forever.

Finally watched all To Boldly Flee parts back to back (it was long but I hate to watch separated parts each day/2 days).

and well.. it was better than expected (my expectations were too low after Kickassia and Suburban Knights crap) there was a plot, characters learn stuff from the story, references to the other reviewers stuff and movie, actual set, villains, many funny parts from Spoony and other guys, Snob was awesome, RoboTodd, I'm a Distraction..ect so yeah credits to the Walker brothers here. (They should have Spent more weeks to use green screen instead of the house setting, the "ship" set and palatine room were good tho).

so yeah, nice anniversary movie for the first time ever(and last time since they will not do it anymore) and nice goodbye for Spoony(got the biggest role with Doug and Brad).

What almost ruined it for me was the crazy Spoony fans who are still insulting Lupa on the comments section(srsly let it go),but I stopped reading comments since there was not time.

I hope for Spoony this means that there's less structured review-y type of reviews, basically the same boring stuff everyone does now, and does more Vlogs, Counter Monkeys, Let's Plays, etc.

He'll be alright. He's a smart guy, and very talented as well; he's given me a lot of entertainment over the years, and I really appreciate that.

EDIT: Holy crap at that video. I had no idea they were so self-aware about the whole "critic" business they've built up. Kind of crazy. I guess like 2006 to 2010 or so was like the golden age for it all. Crazy how fast that goes.

He talks about his departure from TGWTG in depth here.

Seriously guys, you have to watch this video. If you're interested in why Spoony really left, or just how stuff works in the "critic" business, it's really interesting. Not to mention Spoony goes into a lot of the stuff of the time. Really interesting stuff.

Well I feel better now that Spoony explained more about his point of view.

Now give me FF13,more counter monkeys and let's plays :)

Have we reached an impasse with the angry review age?

Yes, yes we have, it is a style that is slowly dying out due to supersaturation. Also, I with Spoony on the matter of payment for services rendered, Doug and his entrouage just bought a fucking studio and they couldn't pay Spoony for his role in the film? That I don't like and yea Spoony is right to have it be a sore point.

I'm honestly not sure why Spoony was ever with those dude's, he was far better off by himself, he never needed them.

Have we reached an impasse with the angry review age?

God I hope so, was never a fan of any of that stuff.
The only people I have seen able to do it well are RLM, as the plinkett character actually makes the reviews more enjoyable.

So Spoony really left because he sees the end of NC has the death of TGWTG?

Sort of, but that's not the only reason. He didn't see TGWTG having a bright future, for multiple reasons, mostly due to how they were hiring and treating different producers, and the fact that he didn't want to have to pack up and move to Chicago, because he saw almost zero job security in it.

Can you blame the guy? I mean the ratings get worse and worse, and the way things are going, the writing is on the wall. That site has just too many different people doing different things, and its design doesn't help people discover anything, and most people don't care to discover anything anyway. I mean, just look at it, it's kind of a mess. They can fix that, but they can't fix the over-saturated talent pool so easily.

I'm guessing the whole twitter thing basically was the catalyst that got all the talks going and allowed Spoony to say his peace earlier than expected. Or he could be lying and he just got canned; either way I guess it doesn't matter. The fact of the matter is that he's gone and by himself now, and he'll still likely be okay. At least that's what I got from the video.

Even the Plikett character has basically been sidelight for softer and lighter take on things with Half in the Bag.

That's more because it takes awhile to make those reviews, and Half in the bag lets them review recent stuff quickly.

There currently working on a plinkett review right now, possibly two.

Have we reached an impasse with the angry review age?
I would hope so. I don't mind someone being angry in a review, but that routine plays itself out very quickly. The thing I enjoy about Spoony's videos is that he also covers content that he is really excited about.

My favorite content from James Rolfe and Doug Walker were when they would sit back and do a more casual/talking to the camera video. Would I have ever watched those if it weren't for feeling acquainted with them through their reviewer personas? Probably not, but I feel like I get a much more interesting video when they take the costume off.

The thing that I really enjoy with Spoony, is that you can tell he's really passionate about the stuff he reviews, and he knows his stuff in and out. I mean, I've never played most of these older PC RPG's, or DND, but the way the guy paints a picture of what it used to be like, and what he expected back when a game first came out is always special and interesting to me.

Very interesting to hear his side of tings. Can't say I disagree, it sounds pretty logical even. The site really did have too many reviewers that just don't belong. For instance: I'm a big fan of Video Games Awesome/ Awesome Video Games. (they're listed as Fraser on the site I think) but they don't belong on the site, they have a very, very different style of show that just doesn't gel with the rest of thatguywiththeglasses.com and subsequently they get shafted by getting terrible reviews by people that just don't get the show.

I'm sure there are more examples, but my point is: it makes the site an incoherent mess. Hearing his side I have to agree with Spoony; they have a business to run. It's not all fun and games. If you're not making money off an venture, is it really worth doing it? You'll create some goodwill, but if the statistics basically tell you "you don't need to do this"...why do it?

I wonder if James will ever retire AVGN. It seems like he's spent all his energy on the movie and that there really isn't anywhere to go from there for him.

Assuming the movie will be decent (I hope it will be; I backed him for $250,-) I kind of hope he'll call it quits after that for the AVGN character. He's been going downhill for a while now and the mediocre (never bad though) are starting to outweigh the good.

Yeah. I wouldn't mind if he kept doing reviews, and maybe have skits based on the reviews, but there's really no need to do the angry thing anymore.

I just like Noah then "Spoony" if you know what I mean; I find him more interesting when he's doing things off the cuff and real.

I think the Movie is going to be the Nerd's sendoff.

I hope so. He seemed to be kind of getting bored with it, but I think the idea of doing this character in a movie one last time appealed to him, and seemed to be the best way to end it. To be fair though, AVGN brings in the dough, and I wonder how he'll do revenue wise without that character? Hopefully he'd be okay.

The difference is that he doesn't have anyone else really on his site like Doug Does, so there's no real "business" behind it. He seems to really just love to make videos and movies.

The thing that I really enjoy with Spoony, is that you can tell he's really passionate about the stuff he reviews, and he knows his stuff in and out.

This is what I like a lot about Spoony, Yakumo, Mark from CGR, and AVGN over a lot of the other reviewers, especially the more recent ones: they love the subject they are talking about, and are making shows because of that and not just as a way to make some money/gain internet fame. I get the impression with some of the newer reviewers that they've simply looked for a niche to cover as a basis of a show, without necessarily caring too much about the subject matter.

Angry Joe, for example, can come off a bit brazen and loud, but I can tell the dude really cares about games, and gamers. He's always trying to bring some noise to something that tries to fuck over the consumer (like bullshit DLC, Capcom's stunts, etc.).

Yeah, I find his enthusiasm charming... even if he kind of goes back to that standard video game review metric of "graphics, sound, gameplay, etc" some times.

You could definitely tell that he was getting bored, a lot of the newer episodes seemed to be phoned in. I think he's a youtube partner and I think he still does some things with SpikeTV, plus there is his main site, which drives revenue traffic as well.

Damn it, Spoony is going to coerce me into watching this Boldly Flee stuff to hear all of his opinions about a lot of stuff, isn't he?

Boldly Flee Commentary Part 2

Spoony talks more about the industry, SOPA, PIPA, and how the amateur critic business isn't going to last forever.
