The Unpopular Opinions Thread: GAMING EDITION

Little Big Planet was a disgrace of a platformer. Horrendous controls.

YES!!! So yes.

No game defines the PS3 'blackboard' more than Little Big Planet. Ties for first with Heavy Rain for the most overrated game of the generation, and gets a nomination for the most overrated game of all time.

The Nintendo 64, despite having a handful (I by that I mean 5) memorable, landmark releases, is one of the worst systems ever released.

Agreed. Outside of Goldeneye, Kart racers, and wrestling games, my system just collected dust.

This generation's digital releases are better than its retail releases.

Tough one, but I've certainly enjoyed it more than I ever thought I would. Size restrictions being lifted certainly helped. I remember when morons defended size limitations, what fools.

ICO and SOTC are terrible games and "artistic" merit is irrelevant since games are about gameplay and art/story isn't important.

Word.

And to contribute myself:

Most of the stages in Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are dreadfully boring.
Grinding to unlock weapons and abilities is the worst thing to ever happen to FPS.
Super Meat Boy is the best platformer in well over a decade.
Uncharted 2 is unremarkable. It's a good game, but nothing special.
Earth Defense Force 2017 was the best TPS of this generation, until the best TPS of all time - Vanquish - was released.
Morrowind and Oblivion are two of the worst games I've ever played in my life.
Shadowrun is the best multiplayer console FPS since Halo CE.
Operation Darkness is a good game, although the camera is terrible.
OutRun 2 is the best racing game of all time.
Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is one of Rare's best games.
Sonic Unleashed (HD version) isn't half as bad as most people make it out to be.
Fable 1 was way better than Fable 2 (and probably Fable 3, but I skipped that game)
The best Japanese games from this generation are much better than the best western games. Quality > quantity

:D

JRPG's and anime are useless wastes of media, and anyone who utilizes confirmation bias to convince themselves otherwise is a fucking peasant. It's 2010. Japan isn't the glorious land of milk and honey anymore. Games are made for us these days, so now you don't have to pretend that you understand another country's (ancient) culture!

some game-specific ones:

Sonic 2 is not very good. I'm not sure if Sonic 3/K is all that good, either, since I'd have to revisit it. The original is far and away better than the second, though. Especially Labyrinth Zone.

Streets of Rage 2 is not one of the best beat 'em ups. It's a little too long and fluff-filled, especially compared to the Capcom masterpieces.

Under no circumstances is House of the Dead Overkill a good light gun game. When compared to the other four (yes, all four) games, it's an embarrassment.

Damn son, did Nomura run over your dog?

While this topic will mostly be used for slamming popular games, I'll try to keep my opinions on the positive side!

- I personally think the PS3 is the best console ever created, since it has had the most amount of console games that I love. I'm an oldschool PC gamer though and still love that platform more.
- God of War 3, while having some flaws (mostly in regards to some boring areas in the game), still beats many of the other action games released this generation that are generally found to be better.
- If the game's captivating enough, I can easily look past most of its bugs or gameplay fuck-ups; see the Gothic series, Fallout 3/New Vegas (GOTY), Bloodlines etc. I always assume crap will be fixed.
- Sony has the best first-party studios this generation, and pump out too many games that appeal to me. :D

- Aside from its pretty graphics, Flower blows

People who rage against all anime sound exactly like people who rage against all video games. Ignorant, in other words.

Also, you don't need to know anything about Japan's culture (ancient or modern) to enjoy Japanese games from Mario Bros to Vanquish.

Here's a crazy one: I had more fun playing Alpha Protocol than I did New Vegas.

I'd also argue this says more about how good Alpha Protocol is than anything about New Vegas. Both are great games.

RPGs are too long for their own sake. They don't need to have 100+ hours as a bullet point feature to become fulfilling rich experiences.

I'm more referring to the gamers who grew up playing Japanese games (basically all of them) and later moved on to anime as it seemed to be the logical next step. They had no reason to like anime, but they convinced themselves it was great because it came from the promised land. They buy anime posters, figurines, comic books, anything they can get their chubby little hands on. They try to teach themselves Japanese. They convince themselves that they aren't actually total losers and that in Japan they would be understood.

They are subjected to my judgment.

Bethesda makes boring games.

Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed are 2 of the most overrated game series this generation which in which both look incredibly bland.

Yes! I would love a 15-20 hour traditional JRPG experience.

is it possible to out troll a troll?

N,N+ >>>>>> Super Meat boy

Super Meat boy has horrible graphics for a game that admits its graphics are crude

Final Fantasy XIII is the second best Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy IX and VI are terrible.

Lunar 2 is garbage compared to Lunar 1.

X4 is the Best X game and X is the best version of Rock.

Legends is a piece of shit.

Little Big Planet is a terrible terrible platformer.

Yoshi's Island sucks.

Wind Waker still sucks.

Metroid Other M is the best Metroid.

Warcraft III sucks.

Warcraft and WoW lore is terrible.

Gamecube was the best console of it's generation.

Halo 1 is okay, the rest not so much (admitedly haven't played Reach)

Metroid Prime 1 is a very boring game.

Devil May Cry 4 is a better game when it comes to character and combat then any other DMC.

DMC 4 is a better game then Bayonetta.

Resident Evil 5 is a better game then Resident Evil 4, though REmake is still the best RE.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is the worst Metal Gear.

But do they have to be? I honestly think the term "video game" is becoming increasingly outdated, as proven by the likes of Heavy Rain and flower. The high level of personal connection one feels with these experiences, as they are the ones controlling what occurs on screen, has a vast amount of untapped potential as an art form in my opinion.

PSP has a better library of games than any other portable and current gen consoles.

Seriously, I would trade away my Wii, 360, and PS3 before trading my PSP.

I beat Chrono Trigger in 20 hours. And it's the only non Nintendo JRPG I like.

EDIT: Why does everyone hate Yoshi's Island ;_;
EDIT 2: GODDAMNIT the second I edit this post, there's a reply below me saying they didn't like YI.

- I can't realistically say it's a bad game, but Team Fortress 2 is just okay.
- I don't like Yoshi's Island
- I really loved Kingdom Hearts II
- Half Life 2 and it's episodes are tedious—HL1 is really cool though
- I have no problem giving Activision my money—they have games and I like to play games
- The Phoenix Wright games are not really that fun
- I really liked Jak 2—or forced myself to.
- I like Sonic 4 and won't buy Colours despite owning a Wii
- My DSlite is basically an Advanced Wars player
- RPGs in general aren't really that fun (except Kingdom Hearts 2)
- I haven't played Links Awakening, yet love Oracle of Seasons

Open-world games are inherently superior to linear games.

Elite proved this a long time ago.

The fact that most games used to be linear was a techincal issue that has now mostly been solved.

Okay.

Gears of War 2 singleplayer sucks (never played multiplayer so can't comment on that)
Online co-op is no excuse to drop Splitscreen. Give me back my splitscreen co-op.

Mass Effect 1 is a lot better than Mass Effect 2
I enjoyed ME2 but the game played too different from the first and played mostly like a shooter with a good story and not a lot like a RPG.

Call of Duty is overrated (but I doubt that's such an unpopular opinion on GAF)
Halo series went downward after the first part of Halo 1. When the Flood comes in I thought why am I playing Doom 1 again? (Again never played the multiplayer)

I am one hundred percent sure Gears 2 had split screen co-op.

Or are these two unrelated points?

  • FFVIII was a step forwards, whereas FFIX was a step backwards.
  • I've played RE:CVX more than RE4.
  • It's beyond me how some people are willing to pay for online gaming, when I don't even want it for free.

Sorry yes Gears 2 had split screen co-op. Main reason why I even played Gears 2 was because it had split screen co-op
But they were indeed unrelated points.

Explanation will result in flame battles and a locked thread. It's best to just post the opinion and not get into too many specifics. Don't think of this as meant for discussion, it's for venting.

I think even SquareEnix would agree with you there.

COD bores me to tears. COD2 sp and COD3 mp is where the series peaked, it's all down hill from there. However, all my casuals friends still play COD:BO, but then again these are the same guys that thought the Wii was the console to have less then 2 years ago.

GTA IV is the greatest game of this generation. Silly people were expecting SA 2 missed the beauty of IV. It deserved every review it received.

Ah, alright.

I do absolutely agree with you about split-screen co-op. Every game with a co-op mode should have that, as well as split-screen online play. I'd hope that this wasn't an unpopular opinion.

And to another point you made, if you hate the Flood sections of Halo you should play Halo: Reach. There isn't a zombie in sight in that game, and it is glorious.
