The Unpopular Opinions Thread: GAMING EDITION

in today's episode of retardation without repercussions i oh oh oh where have all the good times gone? can't take a piss nowadays without getting a run of the mill muddy fps caught in my urethra. i lay awake at night staring at the ceiling wishing for blue skies something to make sense of all the world, my autism. message board discourse, opining about the superiority of j/wrpgs as if they aren't all a sickness, about things that are passe like online gaming and having opinions. my two cents and here's a dime, go buy yourself codblops... i don't give a fuck what you think bitch.gif

Halo 2 is the best Halo
Mass effect 1 >>>> Mass effect 2
CoD campaign is boring
Final Fantasy is not the best JRPG series even before 13

Fixed.

And they are in deep crisis sales and release-wise, but as far as everything else goes... really? Seriously?

The WRPG is the only genre where the developers and fans alike will lie to you about how much freedom you have, and the options in the games. I don't understand it.

As I see it the two major developments in WRPGs that have made them so succesful in recent years are 1) open-world games like Oblivion, and 2) cinematic games like Mass Effect.

JRPGs have trouble competing with that - at least in the West. Sure you have games like Final Fantasy XIII that have very high production values but at the cost of extreme linearity. And of course Demon's Souls show that taking chances can still pay off. But the overall picture is quite bleak.

You sure are.

Nintendo 64 was better than PSX in everything but JRPG's and game prices.

Cool colors in Pokemon (blue, silver, sapphire, etc.) are always better than the warm color versions.

Guitar Hero plastic instruments feel better than Rock Band's.

Kurt Cobain singing Bon Jovi and Public Enemy in GH5 was awesome.

Tetris Attack (or Panel de Pon) is much better than regular Tetris.

Mega Man X series is the best Mega Man.

I liked SNK vs. Capcom Chaos

"Games" can't be art (because art is not always fun, and any game MUST be fun or rewarding) but videogames can be the vehicle of art in the form of music, design, etc.

Mortal Kombat's peak was 3, not 2.

God of War series is everything but "mature".

The only major development in WRPGs to make them successful has been that they're now being released on consoles additionally instead of exclusively on PCs. As I understand both open world and cinematic genre offerings have been offered for a long time already.

JRPGs are being shoved under the carpet at time of release in the West by faithless publishers, but this has always happened; there's just less console JRPGs now. I mean, if we're talking pure sales numbers didn't Final Fantasy XIII outsell all WRPGs in the US this generation?

I rented Mass Effect with high expectations, and couldn't even bring myself to finish it. Just not my cup of tea. (prepares to be crucified by GAF)

I don't think you understand the thread. You are not supposed to just post something that no one will believe. It is supposed to be genuine points of view.

Speaking of jrpgs pound for pound the Dragon Quest series is superior to Final Fantasy.

As far as Wrpgs go Mass effect 1 was way better then Mass effect 2. They scaled back on the rpg elements too much

Transformers: War for Cybertron was one of the best multiplayer experiences this generation.
Thumbs up.

I'll add that WfC in general is wayyyy better than the PS2 TF game that a lot of people always prop up as a good licensed game/overlooked gem whenever those sorts of threads pop up.

I have no clue what's the deal with the hype behind NSMBWii. Played it to the end, found absolutely nothing special or remarkable about it, except the lengths Nintendo will go to save money even if the game is destined to be a bonafide success. Can the visuals in this game be any lazier and cheaper?

I believe Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory is the best multiplayer FPS ever.

This game is one of the few shooters, if not the only, that properly implemented a class system. The weapon limitations and the support capacities for each were all balanced and fun (except maybe for the flamethrower). Heck, even sitting for 20 minutes in the corner of the map calculating angles and staring at the map to shoot mortars was fun. The original maps were absolutely amazing, and its objective oriented gameplay made it fun for everyone; the less skilled shooters could concentrate on working on the objective, for example dynamiting and putting mines as engineer, defending with a mounted MG as a soldier or calling airstrikes as field ops, while the skilled shooters usually rambo-ed as medics. The game also featured REAL teamplay. While pubs were mostly frag fests, clan matches/scrims were very tactictal and super intense. On top of that, the game was FREE! There's much more to add (trickjumping, graphic tweaks using the console, experience points and levels... etc.) but I'll stop here. Now, the game has changed a bit because of mods and such, and there are no more servers that run ETpro. New games of the genre now feature weird map designs and vehicles which are a real turn off...

Now to talk about other things... I think there's nothing wrong with using narrative concepts in a video game. Yeah, of course, the main characteristic of the medium is interactivity, but the greatest thing about video games is that they combine many art forms. Methods of narration in a video game work in the same way as music in a movie, or lyrics (narrative) in a song. I believe 3D gaming takes a lot from cinema with its use of music to immerse the player/spectator inside their worlds. Video games excel in creating atmospheres and there is nothing wrong with using cutscenes to reinforce its setting or plot. Combining gameplay with storytelling is just another method to do things.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is the best RPG of 2010.

I pretty much bought a DSi (yes, DSi just for the slightly bigger screen) just to play the game. What a disappointment.

Still a solid game. But such a huge step back from SMT:Nocturne. Game is ridiculously easy, a lot of systems make absolutely no sense and the story and constant exposition is bad. Their attempt at the sci-fi elements were just cringe worthy (and this makes up for so much of the dialogue between dungeons). Love the visual style though.

- Sega and Rare are as good as ever.
- Metroid: Other M had a really nice story, for a Metroid game.
- Oblivion is better than Morrowind in a lot of ways.
- By and large, Japanese games are still better designed and more creative than western games.
- 3D is a more important technological advancement for gaming than HD.

MGO is one of the best multiplayer games ever.

The set up process alone makes it look like a brown stain on the mattress. MGO is an embarrassment to all other online PSN games and Sony should have never allowed it to pass certification.

If me saying SO4 being a masterpiece isn't quite valid, then I'd replace it with "Sega has been very good this generation". In fact, Sega is probably the top 3rd party Japanese publisher (and maybe developer) supporting the home consoles right now.

I know you liked it, but would you really consider a 7.9 (or whatever you gave it in the review thread) a masterpiece?

I tried to be as objective as possible in my review. If I was very subjective, I'd give it a 9.5. :lol

MGS3 Subsistence's MGO was the best MGO. It's borderline criminal that Konami forced the servers for it down after less than a year, in a ridiculous attempt to strongarm people towards buying Portable Ops for their MGO fix.

I already said on page 1 that this is the best FPS of this (or any) generation.

I'm going to elaborate.

Most underrated game of this gen? Yes.

Best/most unique story in FPS history? Yes.

Amazing open world with tons of different stuff to do/vehicles to drive/terrain to explore? Of course.

Guards and checkpoints respawn. Okay. At least enemies don't constantly reappear until you hit a certain spot on the map, like every CoD game. It's unique and different than any other FPS we've seen, well, ever!

It's like 15 bucks on Amazon, people. Give it a shot. Game of the generation. (GT5 tomrrow might overtake though)

Seriously, I'm tempted to start a FC2 appreciation thread, but I feel like only me and 7-9 like minded individuals would post. More love for this masterpiece, please!!!

This.
I try to play a lot of western games but I don't understand how titles like Halo, Uncharted, God of War, The Witcher or Diablo 2, to name a few, can be considered better than just "good". I don't even want to talk about the mess that is the Elder Scrolls series...

What? Not only is Halo a linear title with constant mission updates, but it has a way point for pretty much every location you need to travel to.

I found myself wandering around Halo 1 for at least 45 minutes at a time trying to find out where to go. Maybe I'm just used to constant hand holding now, but I could have used a better mini map. Admittedly, the other Halo games cleared this up since they were linear but Halo 1 frustrated the hell out of me.

Also, Guitar Hero had better note charts and better plastic instruments than Rock band ever did.

Both franchises overdid it with releases. Yes, Rock Band did it too, think about it. AC/DC, Green Day, Lego, 1, 2, 3, Beatles, and several "track packs".

Thats 8+ Rb releases since RB 1 (same year as GH3). I won't count all the track pack discs, just count one of them as a whole.

GH: we'll count 3 and on, to be fair.

GH 3, World Tour, Aerosmith, Metallica, Greatest Hits, Band Hero, 5, and Warriors of Rock.

That's 8 a piece. And yeah, guitar hero was a year late to the DLC party, but since World Tour, they've put out the same amount (if not more) than RB in terms of DLC, and offered a full fledged Song creation mode with unlimited free downloads since World Tour.

Why exactly is Guitar Hero the bad guy? I know why. Activision is hated, and Harmonix has crazy fanboy loyalty.

Get over yourselves. Both "brands" worked together to kill the plastic instrument genre. Stop acting like Guitar Hero totally saturated the market when RB was doing the exact same thing. That's always pissed me off.

BTW, I like both games. I'm not taking sides. Just hate the crazy polarizing effect that's occurred. Don't hate GH and praise RB. They both did the same exact thing. RB was just one year ealier to the DLC party.

Eh, might as well:

- Shadow the Hedgehog's OST was one of the best soundtracks of last gen.

- N64 has a better third-party library than most people tend to claim.

- The games of Pokemon: TCG were better than the main Pokemon games and Nintendo should've done more with that series (insert avatar quote here)

- Bible Adventures wasn't a bad game at all, in fact quite a few of the Wisdom Tree games are pretty solid, although there definitely are a few turds (like Sunday Funday)

- I don't really find gaming on the PC as "Welcome to PC Gaming!!!" as people portray it, yeah I play the big titles here and there but I can't see myself playing it more than I play my consoles/handhelds.

- Mega Man 4 is the best of the original series.

- Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter > X-Men vs Street Fighter

Okay I'm done.

Half-Life 2 is boring and incredibly overrated
Uncharted 1 and 2 are both average
Super Mario Sunshine > Super Mario Galaxy
Valve has never made a fun game
Bioware's only fun game was KOTOR, since then everything they've made feels the same
Call of Duty is below average
Unreal Tournament 3 is one of the best online shooters this gen
Final Fantasy XIII is the best RPG this gen
Demon's Souls blows and is only popular because it's "hardcore"
Fallout 3 and New Vegas are dull and boring

BURN ME AT GAF's STAKE!

- Grand Theft Auto 4 is a masterpiece that's reviled because kids couldn't pretend to go to the gym and have eating binges in it. The scale and quality of Liberty City is unrivaled even now.

- Playing with strangers online is not fun.

- Most games don't need multiplayer.

- Super Mario World is best Mario.

- Rage Racer was the best Ridge Racer.

- Soul Edge is the best in the series.

- Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence is the best Metal Gear.

- The Halo series was a mishmash of ripoffs from other works and it was only successful because it was the best FPS implementation on consoles and marketed very well. The series didn't mature until ODST.

- Morrowind is superior to Oblivion, and we will never get another Elder Scrolls game that complex.

- Civilization V lost the character of the series and I can't get back on it.

- StarFox for SNES is also the pinnacle of the series and has one of the best soundtracks ever made.

- Nintendo fucked up FZero and never realized it as it deserved.

- Codemasters can't make a proper rally game since Colin McRae 2.

- Road Rash 3D was fun.

- Sonic 3 is the best Sonic.

- Final Fantasy Tactics is the best FF by a very large margin.

- Developers should stop focusing on graphics and deliver on interaction and content. See Dwarf Fortress for an (albeit extreme) example.

- The best online FPS is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

- Sonic games will not be the same again because we grew up.

- Bioshock and Batman Arkham Asylum should be examples of how to build a game world.

- Symphony of the Night is the peak of the Castlevania series and will not be matched, time to move on.

- The Forza Motorsport franchise is the equivalent of giving a hillbilly a blank check to buy an exotic car.

- The N64 should never have been released using cartridges and was only so because Nintendo was too fucking proud to admit they fucked Sony over.

- On that note, the original PlayStation is the greatest console of all.

- Silent Hill 2 is the closest to an adult game was there is, and if you "get" it you will not forget it for years.

- Vagrant Story and ICO are the most beautiful games ever made.

The only thing I agree with in this list is Tactics being the best FF. Otherwise, so much wrong. Tsk Tsk.

Picross 3D is the best puzzle game ever made since Tetris.

Gotta disagree on that. Every time I start a puzzle in it, it feels like a chore; there is no skill having to erase all of the zeros on the block, so why not allow the player to choose to have them erased in the very beginning? Versus Picross DS, which eliminates all rows with nothing in them, it's an inferior product.

You were close though - PDS is the best puzzle game ever made.

This one is absolutely true.

I mean, we had Beetle Adventure Racing, Rocket Robot on Wheels, Body Harvest, Goemon's Great Adventure, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Harvest Moon 64, Mischief Makers, Ogre Battle 64, Space Station Silicone Valley, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and many more.

A few more

Madworld>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>God Hand
Little King's Story was GOTY last year
Skies of Arcadia is one of the best games ever
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the stories in most games written by Nojima
Devil May Cry 4>1
Masato Kato is the best writer in the industry
Mitsuda>Uematsu (both are fuckin awesome though)
Baten Kaitos> BKO
The character dynamics in Valkryia Chronicles 2 actually aren't too bad
Kojima should grow a mustache

I honestly think that if I was given run of Sega I could do better at running it than Sega. Truth be told I think most gaffers with a little business acumen could do better.
