The Unpopular Opinions Thread: GAMING EDITION

There are exceptions here and their but you cannot design that FPS level design (and 3D level design in general) has become insanely simplistic compared to its toddler years.

As for Reach =, well I can't really comment on something I haven't played.
Not necessarily. Most FPSes today focus on the encounters rather than the actual levels. A level can be overall linear, but each encounter can be pretty non-linear in how you approach it (like Halo).

Games can attain the level of art, but not by aping cinema. Titles that are pure gameplay, that innovated the interactions between game and player through level and game engine design qualify, IMO.

Super Mario Bros. 1 is a piece of art.

They don't, in fact this time is the best in history to be a gamer; it appears to me that you have been looking for games for you in the wrong place.

It IS the best time to be someone that loves video games, but only because we have access to the older games. There are some genres that don't get much exposure yet are doing just fine when it comes to new releases (2D shooters), sure, but not every genre is like that.

If I were scoring games, I would remove a point from every game that does the "gray screen means you're dying" thing.

So ME2 would get an 8, inFamous would get a 7, etc.

Here we go:

-Gaming's center of axis shifting from Japan to the west is one of the worst things to happen since the Crash of '82
-Star Ocean 4 is a great game, better than most RPGs released this gen
-Japan still makes the best games
-Turn-based RPGs are the best genre
-Random encounters are awesome
-Many WRPGs tend to be buggy messes with shallow combat systems and the most ghastly-looking character modeling
-Music/rhythm games are just glorified "Simon"
-Goldeneye (N64) was garbage. Grating MIDI music, single-digit framerate, confusing levels, shitty N64 blurry graphics and boxy models
-This generation of home console gaming is downright awful
-Focusing on online gaming at the expense of single player gaming hurts the long-term viability of a game and is one of the biggest complaints with gaming nowadays
-Bioware is overrated
-GTA series are broken messes with some atrocious controls, but some of the better licensed music in games
-COD is dumbing down video games for everybody
-Resonance of Fate is the best console RPG to come out in years
-I question anyone who has given up hundreds upon hundreds of hours of their life to play MMOs
-Gameplay and fun are waaaaaay more important in games than pretensions of being an "artist" or having an "epic" story
-Double Fine games have great art directions and a decent sense of humor, but the gameplay in their games is an absolute chore
-People who tend to obsessively hate Japanese games/animation are usually ignorant, racist, and uneducated bastards
-Wind Waker character design is hideous, and sailing sucks
-Spirit Tracks is one of the worst "core games" Nintendo has ever made
-FF10 was better than 9, and it was the last good FF game
-FF5 is the best FF game ever, 6 was good but very overrated
-Blizzard would get much more love from me if they made a game in a genre I actually gave a fuck about, right now I just look at their games and scratch my heads thinking "why the hell did this take ~6 years to make?"
-Xbox 1 was nearly worthless apart from Sega's exclusives
-Twilight Princess was much more enjoyable to me than Ocarina
-The original Unreal Tournament is still the greatest multiplayer FPS of all time
-People who refuse to game on handhelds should have their "hardcore gamer" card revoked
-Mario Galaxy 1 was a better game than 2

Exploration or navigating the levels themselves is no longer an obstacle in first person shooters, it's all about combat now. Love it or hate it I guess.
How is this an unpopular opinion?

I mean, I most of the time only see people saying some random stupid things without arguments and then wander of.

^ Wow, perfect. Although I can agree with most of them.

We should get married. <3

No, no encounters were more non-linear back then too.

Fallout and all its cousins are exemplars of lousy design for a single-player campaign. Don't inundate the player with stats, details and unlimited freedom right off the bat. It's daunting, and ultimately boring when you realize you can do anything, but suddenly feel like doing nothing.

Unpopular opinion for sure.

Another:

Random encounters are for the fucking birds. Archaic game design that has no business in any game today, at all, ever, under any circumstances. Ditto for random dungeon designs.

I hated Bioshock and I liked Too Human.

Demon's Souls was okay.

Final Fantasy XIII blew despite having great combat

Final Fantasy XII is the greatest in the series.

I love Gears of War 1 and 2

I worship at the alter of Vagrant Story and I think Matsuno is one of the greatest of all time.

Mass Effect 1 was amazing and somehow ME2 is better.

I think this is actually popular opinion. :p

-There's a reason why the Japanese games industry is failing.
-Mother/Earthbound is the only JRPG series that isn't a complete waste of time.
-Okay maybe Chrono Trigger was slightly above average.
-Realtime with Pause is not "pretty much the same thing" as turn based.
-Half-Life 2 style cutscenes are STILL CUTSCENES

Here's part of my list that would get me probably stoned on GAF.

I dislike western RPG's with the exception of Demon Souls (which is more western style to me even though it was made in Japan). Bioware and Bethesda are given too much credit for being RPG's gods this generation. They make decent looking games but they aren't as good as everyone hypes them up to be.

I still love JRPG's even despite the fact that they have been mostly lackluster this generation at least on consoles, which is the majority of where I play most of my RPG's. Even though everyone would tell me to go hang out with my DS I don't have interest in playing RPG's on my DS for the most part. I've got Chrono Trigger and am Buying Golden Sun.

Dragon Quest is the worst JRPG series and I've never understood how people like that Slime thing.

Tales of Legendia is something that I consider to be the best in the series. Especially before Vesperia but now they're about equal. Legendia still wins in the best story category.

The only Strategy RPG I like is Valkyria Chronicles. Every other game I've tried in this genre I've not been able to stand. FF Tactics, Fire Emblem etc.

I don't understand the thrills behind 1st person shooters IE: COD, Halo, Medal of Honor. Yet I love 3rd person shooters like Uncharted.

I cannot stand the Grand Theft Auto series but I really enjoyed Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire looks to be impressive.

Zelda hasn't been exceptional since Wind Waker, despite it's flaws I still love it. All the others are grandma easy games that I cannot stand.

The first Xbox was a miserable console with one of the worst title line-ups in years for a complete console. It had a few gems here and there. I still don't get how Microsoft got so much support after that first console.

I like Super Mario 64 more then I loved both Galaxy games, even though they are all fantastic.

PSP has better games then the DS.

:lol at all of this, but especially the bolded.

Almost anything could be described that way.

Command-RPGs for example, which you suggested was the best genre. A certain monster appears, which calls the user to implement a specific battle strategy, they do so, they win.

It's still call and response game design, it's just abstracted to the color being an enemy and the button command being a response.

Clicky sticks are the worst addition to game controllers ever.

Square Enix is still an excellent company. They release their best games on handhelds, so unfortunately nobody notices them.

Handhelds deserve far more attention from the press and game publishers than they currently get.

Nearly all game stories are bad. They may have depth that causes us geeks to gush over their finer details, but that does not make them good.

nah man, dungeon crawl stone soup may be 10x as complex and interesting as a modern bioware game but it's just way too archaic with all the randomization and options and shit

The problem here is that Bethesda hasn't made a good game since 2002 and Bioware hasn't made a good rpg... ever.

Modern Warfare 2 had the best SP campaign. I played the Ranger missions, god knows how many times.
With the exception of PDZ and COD2, the 360 had no good games till Gears
GTAIV was dreadful. Who the hell puts realistic driving in a GTA game? Fuck that. Arcade all the way.
Call of Duty will not die anytime soon.

The argument on whether games are art or not is incredibly stupid. People care too much about a friggin label? Nothing is going to play differently if games become accepted as art.

The only good western developers are Sony's first party studios, Insomniac, Valve, Bioware, Rockstar and RETRO. Everything else that comes from the west is overrated, over hyped and boring.

FF XII has a piece of shit battle system that needs prescripted commands to run well and can't make up it's mind if it's an MMO or single player game.

Street fighter in it's current form is a steaming pile of shit in terms of mechanics. No use in painting a turd with pretty colors if it's still a turd.

Anyway, yeah you are. You must have played a lot of FPSes recently to know that that picture is only true in the most rare circumstances. Believe whatever you want, but that picture has hardly any truth to it.

Nintendo makes stupid games these days, but they are still head and shoulders above everyone else.

Valve makes trashy games.

Warhawk and KZ2 were the only games worth a damn this gen.

SE is mentally retarded but they made one of the greatest games ever a few years ago.

Sony sucks. Microsoft sucks. Nintendo sucks. PC gaming sucks.

The current handhelds are outdated crap with shitty controls and worthless displays. Nintendo makes the worst handhelds ever. The 3DS looks like an overpriced piece of shit.

Video games are WAY overpriced.

Yeah, this is where things go off the rails.

It becomes less "What opinion do I have that is not really mainstream?" and more "SUCK ON THESE EGGS, GAF, WOOOOOOOOO"

Halo and Crysis bring nothing unique or new to the FPS genre and I dont feel they warrant as much love as they are given

No matter what people feel I still think Tekken is inferior to Virtua Fighter, even though I play both

Kingdom Hearts is fanfic garbage

FFVII and VIII ruined the Final Fantasy series

EDIT: I agree with DJtiesto, the Xbox felt incredibly crappy save for a few games, namely Gunvalkyrie, Outrun, Ninja Gaiden Black, Phantom Dust and Panzer Dragoon Orta. As a result I never owned one nor had the desire to.

Now keep in mind I DO have a 360 but that's because they've more than made up for good software output, and no I'm not counting Halo, COD or other generic FPS dreck.
