Yea that gameplay video reminds me of why I wasn't so hot on gameplay. Even with a stylus, it was super easy to get snagged up with the controls with stuff get crazy. Having movement and attacks being tied to very similar gestures is probably the main con I had.

Probably why I kinda stop caring about being technical and just spam shit for most of the game.

Not trying to be condescending, but did you know that you could different sets of pins at the same time? Basically if you had different pins activated by the same command you could have one that wouldn't work unless you held down L or R. I used this a lot, 'specially in the end-game.

So how did the battle system work and why were multiple screens important?
On the bottom screen you controlled a battle with stylus gestures, on the top screen you controlled a simple DDR-like mini-game with the dpad. Careful play and sync of both of these simultaneously passed a power puck back and forth between characters, which enabled stronger/more efficient attacks.

If they do, they'll be missing out and missing what they're looking for.

But I'm not dumb. You were expecting something else.

No, you're fucking dumb.

Ugh, such a disappointment.

You know how to have completely saved your social network presence for this game? NOT have done a stupid fucking countdown clock.

I get it, iOS ports are easy, low budget, and reach out to a wide audience. However that large audience is NOT who you're reaching out to with something like an online countdown clock. The fans are mostly the only ones who cared. This isn't what fans expect from a hype countdown clock.

A surprise announcement would've prevented the insane backlash and dislikes.

It was also kind of important to the narrative, what with Neku having to learn to cooperate with people.

Ugh, I think my mind blocks out just how bad that first cutscene is. Thankfully it gets a whole lot better as you go along.Thank god for the localizers who did their best to trim the emo stuff.

Some things said still make me cringe though.

Interesting looking combat for the iOS version. Will be interested in trying it out if someone I know picks it up.

.
Seriously. First time I played the game I put it down for three months after the first few chapters because of how much of an ass Neku is in the beginning.

Awesome, will buy for iPad! Very thankful to have everything condensed on one screen.

This will sell well, and S~E will laugh in the face of the vocal Internet minority (aka NeoGAF).

As interesting as the single screen combat looks I really do hope this isn't some sign of them moving away from the double screen combat in the hypothetical sequel.

That would make me very very sad.

Totally understandable. He really is such an unlikable douche.
Funny how that ends up being part of the reason I found the game so charming in the end! I wouldn't exactly call the story amazing or great, but watching his redemption is part of the reason I found the game so charming in the end. I do think the game does excel in it's world building, however (which I personally differentiate from the actual story being told). I think I might still be missing a secret report or two.

Arrrgh, I'm getting that urge to play through the game again. I don't even have a DS anymore to scratch this itch. :(

So for anyone that didn't play this on DS, could you recommend this version?
I don't own a DS but am willing to try this on iphone 4S.
Also how long would the game take to complete?

It's hard to say because we still don't know the severity of the compromises made to the battle system. But the game itself takes about 20-25hrs for the main story, howevere there's plenty of more hours if you want to do the extra post-game stuff (which is highly rewarding).

I don't think anyone can give you an honest recommendation until the iOS version is actually released and people can actually play the thing.

The iOS version is actually released and people can actually play the thing, just not in the US yet. NZ and Indonesia and plenty of other markets have it already.

Ya know, internet rage aside, I can almost get behind this. From all I can see they have actauly re-drawn most if not all the sprites (or uncompressed them, it could be ether/or) however, SE seriously need to find a decent compression setting for their music. I don't have gigs to give up on stupid shit like that.

Oh. I didn't know that (clearly).

Well, then maybe someone in those markets who has played both can pop in here and give him a proper answer.

holy shit. I vaguely remember the tutorial for that but never actually used it.

mind is blown.

Wonder how that would work on ios though.

To be fair, in your quote of yesterday's twitter it's missing the part saying "People may write it off tomorrow anyway, if they do..." which implies it's not the sequel people were really expecting since otherwise he wouldn't be acknowledging the possibility of disappointment. But yeah, it was poor judgement on his part anyway.

Now that I think about it, would anyone be THIS pissed off if that idiot on twitter didn't open his mouth?

I wouldn't be, that's for sure. That tweet made me think that, while probably not being a sequel, it would at least be marginally of interest. I might be more annoyed at him than at Square Enix.

Any lower budget than the original?

I mean the completely redrew all the art and the combat system is redesigned for the platform.

Isn't there new content and music in this as well?

I think it's a bit unfair to write it off as an easy cash-in. They seem to have put some effort into this release

I'd agree if the countdown clock was for anything but the launch of the game.

and I think any other audience would be kinda interested in playing a new version of a game they like.

Look at Persona fans.

I really don't understand the mob reaction to this at all. It looks pretty cool to me. If I was a fan I'd be pretty interested in going though the game again on my phone at work.

This looks hot. I'll wait for impressions though first, if it works I'll bite, otherwise I'll hunt the DS game again. I've been meaning to do it for a while but I'm dreading boosting time and WiFi reliant pins, which I'm now hoping the iOS version simplified somehow.

It is "pretty cool". It is not worth the countdown they put up. It is not worth the tantalizing hints. This is something that is neat. It is not something fans were going to get extremely excited about

It is not something fans were going to get extremely excited about

Why not?

I'm just curious why people are so angry towards it.

Is it because it's on IOS?

I don't see how this is any different than something like HD remasters or even something like Persona 4 the Golden. and fans seem pretty excited about those kind of ports/re-releases.

something i just realized. Fans complain when a game gets zero marketing, but fans also complain when marketing goes to work for stuff they weren't imagining.

Was thinking of applying for marketing job... maybe not.

It's because fans have already played the game AND it seemed a dead franchise until Square Enix started to tease something more concrete (Nomura's word, characters in KH3D, the countdown). I could have justified the porting if TWEWY would have been a famous IP that already had some sequels and more consideration, but that's just trolling, come on.

Well, not entirely, but I do think that if this was announced for Vita some (not all) reactions would be very different.

Yeah, it's like they were looking into the future. With Streetpass and Spotpass, it would be much, much better.

Oh god...street passed characters taking places on the map...oh god...ENNNIIIIXXXXXX!!!

;_;

S'cuse me whilst I go play Yoshi's Island and hope for a Yoshi's 3D Island... ;_;

People don't like paying premium prices for enhanced ports of five year old full fledged games.

can't think of many enhanced ports where gameplay seems to be entirely different. And this is SE we talking about. They aren't shy to repackage chrono trigger or FFT or w/e and well it to ya for full price.

I do think it's more price and cuz it's on ios. Heck if this was a brand new ip at the same price, people would still complain.

I don't understand why these developers don't bother making iOS/Vita multiplatform games. Doesn't the Vita basically have the same hardware as an iPad.

I think it's partly because the original game was renowned for its unique twin-screen battle mechanic. Taking that away is removing / butchering a huge part of what made the original game great.

Its not necessarily because its iOS and more because I'm really not sure what the game gains from coming to iOS. The improved graphics are nice but its not like the game is that old. It might go over a bit better if they did this years from now.
