There is no Xbox 'Series S'

I'm sure I'm going to catch some flack for this but so be it. They've already explained the Series X name and it's been easily understood for me since square one. It's a simple convention really if you look at it abstractly.

What was the Xbox One X relative to the Xbox One/S? It was the X SKU of the One branding, in that series of consoles it was the X. X is to Microsoft the peak of compute, design, there is nothing better, it is symbolic of power. The Xbox Series X is exactly that as well. It's not the implication of belonging to a literal series, it's the inference of it being the peak of design possibilities as a platform out of the gate.

Look at it this way, this is the Xbox One.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) S (SKU)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) X (SKU)
This is Series X.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) Series X (branding)

There is no Series S, Series X isn't a SKU, it's the generational branding and name of their next-gen platform. Series S is the result of people confusing what Series infers as a name on the back of the Xbox One, they're thinking of it literally as it relates to that platform rather than symbolically.

Unless you have some inside info how do you know it doesn't breakdown as

Xbox (Manufacturer) Series (branding) x (sku)
All of the material coming out makes it quite clear. Series X is the next-gen branding just as One was to the departing generation. Game case art and every bit of source material from the manufacturer and third parties already dispells this 'Series S' rumor nonsense.

Everything points to them moving to a cellphone or even car trim type mode.

Lockheart (if released) will likely be Xbox Series "something", much like we have the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE.

Series S is just what people are calling Lockhart, but truth be told we have no idea what it will be called.

We do know that Series X is the console name, and that Xbox calls this generation just "Xbox" so Series is just part of the SKU.

Maybe it will be called Xbox Digital, or Xbox Lite, or we can assume they are sticking with existing branding and will call it Series S

The way I see it is
Xbox (brand) Series (generation) X (SKU)
So Xbox Series S makes sense.

Only question is, if Microsoft will choose S as a letter for Lockhart

No, there's ghosts and whispers.
They frankly make more sense if you had to release another class of HW in the same rebranded generationless new Xbox brand though... Xbox Series X at the top end, Series S below it... like S Class, C Class from Mercedes-Benz, etc...

Another fact of reality that people are overlooking is this. They plan on supporting the Xbox One for a period of 12-24 months beyond the release of Series X.

How exactly does a 'Series S' slot into this? The Xbox One is their budget support line of hardware for games they will make available, it doesn't even have a place in the market. By the time they phase out the Xbox One the Series X would be in a position of more affordable options.

And to add to this even more they are pushing Xbox All Access hard for the Series X, making it affordable even for people who can't outright buy one.

'Series S' doesn't fit into anything they're doing, and the branding of the platform is already solidified. It's already case art.

It doens't make much sense to make an Xbox Series X Lite or whatever. I think the X is for the 'most powerful console in the world' version and we'll also see an S. It's just common sense to use the same S and X as we currently have with Xbox One.

I still highly doubt that they are going to announce such a console.

The console might exist, it is a possibility they wanted to have, but it does not confirm that it is going to be actually released.

It's pretty much confirmed at this point. Devs have already outed it.

It won't be smaller though. It will use the same form factor of Series X, due to it using the same CPU. But I predict that it will be white, to keep with the "S" branding from XBO.

What dev's? List them.

It's just smoke and mirrors, and twitter murmoring.

It is basically impossible to explain any of this XSeX naming BS to my grandma, so whoever came up with that cryptic crap and then whoever approved it at Microsoft is an idiot.

I can't think of any other thread on the gaming side this conversation would've fit in to so I commend you for creating this thread and more importantly creating the totally logical and rational discussion.

We owe you a debt as a forum, OP.

I believe this too. However Tom Warren started tweeting about it, and a vetted Gaffer did too.
I don't believe the console exists at all.

usually pubs don't like putting out promotional pics of things that have yet to be revealed.

These could easily just be placeholders and they'll add series s on the banner after its announced.

is it confusing? Yes, but it is Microsoft after all.

They haven't officially announced Lockhart, so they aren't going to spoil it. You think that they can't add a "Xbox Series X/S * Xbox One" to the graphic?

Series S totally fits into what they are doing, because it will become the low price replacement for all of Xbox in 2021. Xbox One will be retired from retail.

Do you think Lockhart is fake?

They didnt stick with that branding too hard throughout given my One X is also white... well white and black but predominantly its white.

Their was thread on here that was verified by mods and that basically confirmed it exists.

Its real but that doesn't necessarily mean its coming out.
The same mods who vetted OsirisBlack; who I argued with endlessly and resulted in me being banned for a month, just to turn around and find out that he was full of it and I was right all along about the computational standings of the PS5 vs. the Series X?

There's no credibility here from anyone, and given all the crap that came out of Era about the PS5 there's really no credibility anywhere. Stabs in the dark, misdirection and changing stances as the wind blows is the name of what happens and comes out of these "insiders" and "verified" people.

Give me a break.

I think Lockhart is and always has been a complete misunderstanding based upon some codename people dug up for something they didn't fully understand on the back of Phil Spencer saying "consoles" 2 years ago.

They'd be better off removing the X so it's just:
Xbox Series
Xbox One
Since One also incorporates X and S.

People make it sound more complicated than it is. It's simple:

Xbox One S
Xbox One X

Xbox Series S
Xbox Series X

Phil Spencer himself confirmed that the next gen console is just called the "Xbox". Meaning that the "Series" part is a sub-title.

As far as consumer confusion goes. The Xbox One hardware will be gone as soon as The "Series" line launches. The One X has already been discontinued (Confirmed that no more have been sent to retailers a few months ago).

You can think what you want, but you're wrong.

The Xbox One X has not been discontinued, this is even more BS. The individual system SKU was discontinued, they only offer bundled SKU's now.

Given that you can set your hardware profile to Lockhart for debugging purposes, it is something a little more substantial than a misunderstanding...

Debate all you want if Lockhart will come out, but there is more than enough information out there that Xbox has two working hardware profiles based on Zen2 and RDNA 2.

Something tells me this thread won't age well

Hasn't YET. Everything points to MS retiring the Xbox One hardware likely before end of fiscal 2021 and just have Zen2/RDNA 2 hardware available in-stores.

There is no reason to continue manufacturing Xbox One in any format after 2020 with the type of new hardware model they are talking about.
