Things people HATE about gaming that you don't mind at all

I love everything, every game, I don't understand why people need to *hate*.
I understand if someone dislikes some features in a game (Qte, linearity, etc), but I think it's easier to avoid the games with those features and go to play something different.
I will never jump into a thread and start to sissy all around about a game I don't like.

Nice thread !

I agree.

Unless it's something objectively bad, I usually just write it off as not appealing to me and carry on. No need to say it's 'shite' or whatever just because it's not my cup of tea.

Grinding in RPGs. I feel that if I grind and become stronger than current level enemies, there is nothing wrong with that since I put in the effort to become stronger. I also like grinding for items, skills, magic, etc.

Also, collectathons. I don't know, I just find them fun and don't mind them at all, especially in Zelda games.

A lot of stuff I think. Most things in general I guess actually. I am a pretty laid back dude and most things in games don't really bother me.

I'm just here to have fun and shit, so what if 1% of a game is some QTE button prompt, nothing to get upset about (unless it's legit a terribly designed QTE). Sometimes they even feel satisfying if it's like the one in vanquish where you spam a button to punch the crap out of an evil robot spider.

lol Losing in any video game. "Dude it's lag!" and "C'mon dude you can't even do that in this game".

FPS that don't deliver a trendy life bar. I also feel like a game shouldn't just magically play the way you want it to. Don't get me wrong because there is a such a thing as bad controls. But I've seen people bash on games just because they couldn't get past the difficulty and its hilarious.

Backtracking is a big point I see mentioned as a negative all the time. I love revisiting places with new abilities, opening up new possibilities. It's detrimental to the creation of a living, breathing world to me. My favorite games, Metroid Prime and Majora's Mask, both heavily rely on backtracking and they both end up delivering outstanding game worlds.

Technical shit,

-jaggies
- clipping
-sync
- frame rate drops
- screen tearing
- pop ins

All that shit. Mans just don't care. Only thing I really care bout is load times.

Online passes.

They add value to people who would buy original, and do not impede the person who buys used/borrows, and presents a more fair share of profit to the devs for the people who buy the pass from a used game.

I dont get the hate.

Almost everything people on GAF hate I like.
DLC, QTE's, Cutscenes etc.

I like most games that have come out TBH, I don't know if I just like most games for some reason or what.

I can think of something I hate that I never seem to hear anyone gripe about - the "mash this button to complete this task" gameplay mechanic.

Mash this button to open this door. Mash this button to turn this valve. Mash this button to get guy off of you. Repeat. Just make it automatic for fuck sakes, I'm not getting any satisfaction whatsoever out of jumping through this gameplay hoop for you yet again. I don't understand why it's being added most of the time. To add a few more seconds to the gameplay? The only time it kind of makes sense is when you are trying to open a door or something and someone is chasing you, it does (somehow) add a bit of tension to the moment. Or the moment near the end of MGS4, probably the best use of that mechanic ever I think. But you see it over and over again, even in otherwise amazingly designed games like The Last of Us, where it simply isn't needed.

Edit: I feel this is different from true QTE's, which I really don't mind all that much when used sparingly. You want to show me an awesome cinematic & I have to press a button or two to do something? Sure, you can't do it in your game engine. But opening a door?

Main character having amnesia. It's been used a lot, but figuring out who you are is a pretty good game premise.

Red barrels explode.

Sequels that are a lot like the previous game, only fully 3D and full of small refinements.

Escort Missions - Not only do I not mind them, I actually really like them. They're one of my favorite gimmicks in game design. I love the feeling of accompanying and interacting with a friendly AI character. They develop a distinct personality, not all of it intended (bugs).

Screen tearing...repeated frames...I never notice these things.

Resolution below 1080p....as long as its 720p+ I can't tell from my viewing distance and I don't care.

-30fps
-Nintendo using the same characters (actually prefer it)
-"bad" graphics. There's an unacceptable bottom line that no developer should fall under like if it looked like a Ps1 game while I'm playing it on say the PS3; but who cares if it lacks AA, ray tracing, or other big complicated words that don't make sense.
-Linearity in Zelda. Just make sure it has a big overworld.
-backtracking
-Motion controls
-unrealistic art styles
-Anime art style
-lack of online
-only single player
-so on

Honestly, I still don't know the difference in 30 / 60. I guess it's 50% not paying attention, 50% not giving a fuck. If the game is fun, it's fun.

Yeah I don't see a difference between 30 and 60 tbh.

Add screen tearing, frame rate drops etc...

-Violence (hate people whining about violence in games. It's not real life guys and gals!)
-FPS with a controller (m+kb is superior but i 'm comfortable using a controller)
-30fps (60fps is great but every game doesn't need it)

30fps
QTEs as implemented in GOW (not a fan of instadeath QTEs in any game)
lots of shooting in a shooter
violence/killing as primary mode of interaction
gratuitous head explosions
ludonarrative dissonance
linearity
non-ultra-high-res-textures
playing FPS with a controller

I don't know if HATE is the right word, but at least someone out there feels that strongly about these things.

I am nearly this guy except for the ultra high res textures thing. I just started gaming on a fairly decent specced PC and I have fallen in love with decent quality AA, high res textures, and anisotropic filtering. Image quality is now king for me.

The whole ludonarrative dissonance thing never really affected me since I don't take the story in most games seriously and just view them as a vehicle for presenting game mechanics I want to use to have fun playing the game.

The playing FPS with a controller thing is huge for me since I've been gaming with controllers all my life and have years of muscle memory built up to where I can be pretty decent with it. I'm still learning how to game using mouse and keyboard and can appreciate people's preference and the improved aiming capabilities provided by the mouse but I have a hard time keeping the mouse on the mouse pad in fast paced games and my fat fingers keep hitting keys on the keyboard by accident where I never had an issue pressing the wrong button on a gamepad.

I think it will take some time for me to fully adapt to MKB but for now I think I will buy competitive shooters that are available on PS4 for that console since the new consoles should result in versions of these games that aren't that much more deficient from how my PC would run them. Hopefully by the time the console versions start to look like shit compared to the PC version, I will be able to at least put up a fight using MKB so I can switch to the PC version. I really do hope Battelfield 4 is 1080p as well as being 60fps on PS4 as I might really be tempted to get it for PC and get my ass kicked by KBM jockeys to experience it in its full glory.

- "Tank Controls" (Classic Resident Evil/Silent Hill)

- Huge maps that take a long time to explore (Wind Waker's Sailing)

- Cutscenes (Metal Gear Solid)

- 30 FPS
- Any type of post AA (FXAA, SMAA etc)
- Linearity
- Cutscenes
- Oversexualizing
- FPS with controller (I like both KB/M and controller)

QTEs in GoW for example...
This, QTEs on GoW never felt out of place for me but I think people hate them basically because many games tries to mimick it and fail at it.

I don't understand why people hate trophies/achievements you can easily ignore their existence.

And I am not bother by linear games while I enjoy more sandbox games I understand that a game like The Last of Us or Halo benefit from being linear and I enjoy them alot.

A mess of stuff I thought of:

DLC (Don't want it? Don't pay for it)

QTE (God of War style, where you can recover from a fail)

30 FPS (Played Crysis 3 locked at 30 on PC so I could use 8x AA with 1080p for clear picture, it stayed at a constant 30 FPS with no drops and loved it)

60 FPS (Some if my friends think 60 FPS looks too smooth! Others do not notice a difference! I can easily tell the difference and I prefer 60 FPS when it's possible and able to be kept locked)

ME1 Mako Missions

Mass Effect 3's Ending(s)

Dualshock 3

The entirety of MGS4

Games that are easy, even on hard

Stealth gameplay

The Vita

A narritive/story attached to the game (I need something to keep me interested, even if the story is predictable/mediocre)

Tacked on MP (Somtimes it's pretty good!)

Linear games

Set pieces

Origin (it's actually pretty convenient)

GFWL (My XBL account works on PC and I can talk to people on my Xbox with private chat. It's very useful for when I cannot use my Xbox to chat but still need to talk to people.)

Controller for gaming (Sometimes when I don't feel like sitting up or flouncing over my kb/m I hook up a 360 controller to play. It's great for most non multiplayer games.)

There's more but yeah I think people get the idea.

Low frame rates. I see it gaf a lot. "How can you play that game with such low frame rates?" By picking up the controller and playing.

Like others have said, controller for PC FPS games. I use controller or kb/m depending on the game/where I'm sitting. I find the controller more comfortable for some games. Can't stand playing third person action games with a KB/M either.

The non-consensual online in Demon's / Dark Souls, i.e the possibility of getting invaded while you are in human/body form. I've heard lots of times in many threads that some people want to just be able to co-op with their friends and turn off invasions. Nah.

- Random encounters in RPGs. I actually greatly prefer that to having to bump into ennemy models to start the combat.
- Turn based combats, when well done like in skies of arcadia. You have complete strategic control and all the time to plan, it's great. I prefer it much more than any action hybrid POS system (I hated Tales of, Star Ocean and FF13 for those).
- Linearity, when it's well done. I prefer a perfectly well crafted one main story than several meh half-assed possible stories. With that said, a few secondary side-quests are still very welcome and sometimes necessary.
- Short Games. I value my time and I appreciate when game makers do too, as long as the game is priced accordingly. I still love some long games, but then I'm much more selective on those.

nonnative res on pc. Well its a rare case where on a 1440p monitor, 1080p with healthy amount of AA looks fine and maybe even a bit better than native res for me (wish games were actually designed for higher res, but alas). Also games tend to not have option to scale UI which sucks with higher res monitors :/

Funny thing is I hate most vita games because OF nonnative res lol.

I don't mind 'easy' jrpgs lol. I play them mostly for the flash and story anyhow. They are rarely balanced anyways and most you can exploit somehow.

I don't mind parts in games where you aren't murdering people, aka walk and talk, or slow walk for w/e.

Tutorials, expecially those in the Zelda games. Wasn't bothered in the slightest by the SS one, which was over before I could even realize it...people like to overblow things

Pretty much everything. Not saying anyone is wrong for having a grievance about a particular area of the industry, but in general I just focus on playing games and enjoying them.

A lot of people say : 30fps (steady) and I agree.

And anyway, I just loved DmC from NT. I don't get the hate for the *game*, it's such a good game!

i agree with quite a lot in this thread (minus 30fps and grinding; can't stand those), but one i didn't really see mentioned was short games. actually, i kind of prefer shorter games.

30 FPS
-I don't think every game needs to be 60 FPS.

Fighting Games

Going outside the game for information

Practicing

Losing

"Bad story"
-I'm a gameplay above all else kind of guy

Design that isn't gritty, brown/gray, realistic, and macho

Weird looking, obscure, absurd, "only from japan" crazy and bizarre

Fixed camera angles

Outrun and Space Harrier stages in Bayonetta

DMC4
-Quite frankly, the gameplay and mooks are my favorite from any of them. All those nuances, on the fly style switching.

Replayability leading to the game being short.
