Things people HATE about gaming that you don't mind at all

I'm much more lenient when it comes to QTEs and the good ol' 30fps vs. 60fps argument (Obviously 60fps is always better, but I'm not bothered in the slightest by 30fps).

Turn based combat is a big one. It makes the game more strategic. I'm not saying it's inherently better, but basically I think of turn-based games as more strategy and real-time as more skill and reflexes (think "twitch" but turned down a notch.)

Also. Linearity. Whether something is linear or open (or some hybrid) doesn't correlate at all to my enjoyment of a game. Some linear games have complete appalled me at the lack of freedom. Some more open games have bored me to tears with a lack of direction or motivation to head in any direction. Some linear games enthralled me from start to finish, some more open games have left me lost (in a good way) and immersed for hours on end.

I recently put over 80 hours into Gothic 3 and loved every minute, so I believe I can say with certainty that "jank" doesn't bother me one bit.

  • 30FPS doesn't bother me. I can tell the difference, but in most games, I don't mind losing some FPS for better visuals
  • Anti-aliasing. Honestly do not care at all about jaggies. Sure, I'd prefer to not have them, but it's not somethign that's ever bothered me
  • QTEs, I can go either way. I don't mind them in most games like in RE4 or Heavy Rain. But I don't like it when action games are based off of QTEs.
  • Enemy scaling. Doesn't bother me in Fallout 3 or Skyrim.
  • Easy games w/ lots of save points/unlimited saving. Again, I don't mind easy games where I get to explore. I'm more interested in exploring a world these days than exploring how to defeat a certain enemy.
  • Stereotypes or cliched minority characters (ie, Cool Bad ass black guy or sexualized female). They don't bother me. I don't care about them. I hate the backlash against stereotypes much more than I hate the stereotype itself.
  • Firing with the triggers, either on PS3 or 360. Doesn't bother me.

Although I have a few things that drive me nuts that I think are uncommon:
  • The XBox 360 battery indicator "spinning" after 50%. This is my biggest pet peeve with the 360 and this generation of games to be honest. It spins WAY too frequently (like once every 20 seconds or something) and it spins for like 8 - 10 seconds.
  • Bad history in games, or games that replace history with pop history an try to pretend that it's legit. Basically, everything from Assassins Creed 1, 2, 3 and all of the addons. I fucking hate it and it drives me insane.
  • Not being able to make a historical game without some stupid scifi in it. Again, AC series.
  • Really sick of how long it takes to get into gameplay these days. I love Sports games and they're the worst offender. getting into a dynasty/franchise game in Madden or NBA 2K series takes like 5 mins from when you sit down on your couch to when you're actually playing. It's so madenning.

I agree.

Unless it's something objectively bad, I usually just write it off as not appealing to me and carry on. No need to say it's 'shite' or whatever just because it's not my cup of tea.

I totally agree with you. I would be *very* happy to read more posts like yours.
There is no need at all to be disrespectful against the efforts of a group of people (developer). I Mean, no games is perfect, some games are plain bad, but most of the time, there is no reason to "hate".

Framerate. If I like the game I'll play it anyway how it is delivered.

Region-locking. I would like everything to be region-free but I do enjoy importing games and systems as well. Something I used to do in the late eighties and nineties and only recently again started importing about six years ago.

Casual Games. I love things like the "Wii ____" series. Love a lot of iOS games.

Games that are heavily inspired by movies or feature FMV or are like Heavy Rain and/or L.A. Noire. In fact, I love all of those things.

DLC items/weapons/etc.- I eat that shit up with no guilt

$5 for Space Blaster 2000 sure TAKE IT!

Grinding in JRPGs. I don't even call it grinding, I call it training. It's a chance to learn new skills, earn money for buying new stuff, and lets me get better at combat.

Most JRPG stories, characters, and tropes. I don't let cliches and tropes ruin my enjoyment of a story. I just see them as comforting elements of my favorite genre. I don't want my JRPG stories turning into TLoU.

Linearity. FF XIII is one of my favorite games of all time. Linearity to me means that the game is probably more balanced than something that is opened world. Having the level caps per chapter meant that you couldn't become a god and destroy everything really soon like in FF XIII-2. I could see how this could feel suffocating to some, but I think there was certainly a lot of time put into the pre-Pulse sections where it concerns balance of gameplay.

Linearity. It can really help set the pace/timing of a game. You can be TOO sandbox in that spending hours between storyline missions lessens the impact of the story.

Likely won't be buying Ghosts, but seeing every single youtube video that's even remotely related to a videogame having comments along the lines of

"this is what real games play not like those Call of Duty kids!"

or

"CoD kids have it too easy these days! This is actual creativity. Metal Gear Solid is an emotional storyline that actually makes you think"

makes me want to just out of spite.

Shooters
Sequels
Cinematic games
Mass Effect 3's ending
Uncharted 3
That JRPGs aren't popular anymore
Call of Duty

I'm sure there are many more but this is off the top of my head.

DLC. Its optional, for one, and to me, I love that games actually have support after release now, instead of the days of the N64 where what you got is it, no chance to fix bugs or anything.

On a similar note, Call of Duty and Madden. I don't get why people have such a huge hate for it. Sure, its yearly, and doesn't have humongous changes per game. But the reason people buy those games isn't for that. Its for fun, for hanging out with friends, playing with the latest rosters or new maps. Its mindless fun, that's all. Not every game out there needs to be a award winning masterpiece of a story.

QTE's
Looting + leveling up
DLC(as long as its priced accordingly)
30 or 60FPS I could care less as long as its fun.

...actually, I'm not a picky gamer at all. I play all types of gameplay styles. Only thing I don't have the patience for is turn based games.

I don't mind 30 FPS in most cases. Especially when it's obvious it's there to take the gameplay to a greater extent. Halo 3 is runs at a solid 30 FPS, and I couldn't mind less, and couldn't be more satisfied. I know half of the big battles in that game would be impossible for the Xbox 360 to run if Halo 3 had been at 60 FPS. I'd much rather teh game run at 30 FPS and have those battles. Would I want all games to be at 60 FPS? Sure, but if it has to run at thirty then you're not going to hear any complaints coming from me. Though it was kind of jarring back in the day when I switched between CoD4 and Halo 3, once I got used to it again in Halo 3 I didn't mind it.

No problem playing games at 30fps but of course I do prefer 60fps. Escort missions are a-ok with me as well as swimming sections.

Regenerating health.

It's been over a decade since Halo made it popular, it's here to stay. Fucking get over it and find something relevant to complain about.

Escort Missions for me: I never get stuck, the A.I. doesn't get in my way, I like multitasking. I never could understand why escort missions warrant such an acerbic reaction. Oh well.

Microsoft Points - they were the best way to get stuff cheap, I shake my head at people saying "I want dollar values instead"
128k DLC keys - You would rather download the DLC instead of having it on disk? That's beyond stupid. You can complain that 'it's on the disc, I should get it' but the fact is you don't really know when the DLC was made so them forcing you to DL it just to make you feel better about your purchase is idiotic.
Ads on the desktop - I've played games I wouldn't have known about due to ads, won free Points from my first item due to triggering an AD that interested me, as long as they don't take up all the realestate

Also, I don't mind DLC at all. In fact, I like it. If I don't want to buy it, I won't. But, I think DLC is a great thing for gaming, somethign that people panned in the "Criticize this gen" threads.

-I'd rather have 30FPS with better graphics than 60FPS with slitghly worse graphics.
-Backtracking, if done right. Á la metroid prime.
-Silent protagonist
-Multiple discs
-Turn based combat
-DRM

-Backtracking
-30FPS
-Grinding levels
-Cinematic Experiences
-QTE (if done well)
-Silent Protagonists

That everything should be 60 FPS. I love a solid 30 FPS. I actually dislike the way 60 FPS looks. Reminds me of that soap opera effect you get on tv shows with the Auto-motion plus stuff.

Shooting with DualShock 3's triggers.

30 fps and different minor technical issues in games.

Most of the games' plots and story arcs.

Trophies (I quite like them actually, not a biggest fan though).

PS Plus requirement for PS4 (I do not like it, but can see the reasoning behind it and tolerate it at least).

Bungie's decision to make Destiny an always-online title (as long as gameplay benefits from it).

Violence.

I have nothing against turn-based gameplay as well (for example, Front Mission 3 is one of my favourite games).

Cutscenes, linearity and 30 FPS. I much prefer a story driven game over anything, especially when it comes to RPGs. I didn't mind the corridors in XIII, the gameplay was fun and except for some of the Hope scenes I loved the game.

I don't mind achievements or trophies really.

Most of the other stuff is a minor annoyance.

Also I don't really care about region blocking mostly.

Pay 2 Win F2P

I don't spend money on them and I can't fault them for giving me a free game to play, even if it becomes a brick wall of progression after 20+ hours..
