Things you DON'T like about GTA IV

That when you jack a car you have to watch a sort of cut scene that does nothing but waste time and annoy you. Take the fucking car, don't change camera angle and shit.
The display of physics is nice, but some of the character animations take too long imo.

If this game is a 10 out of 10 than we are all in trouble
Just stop...

When we consider what other games have received the same sort of praise, GTA IV deserves its 10s.

After playing more, I definitly like the combat system now. It's definitly an improvement.

So my biggest gripe right now really is the lack of mid-mission checkpoint.

The cabs are a big plus.

Get a best buy card and pay it off in installments. That's what I did with my TV and PS3. All paid off.

Firstly, i'm in Australia and we don't have best buy, 2ndly i'm in a fucktonne of debt from my last USA trip, so unless a moneybomb goes off in my wallet, it's a sad time for me...

-Lack of mission checkpoints.
-Inconsistent graphics. Some times I'm amazed and other times I'm disgusted.
-Weak gunplay.
-Poor soundtrack. The talk radio stations are superb as usual, but everything else is pretty meh.

Is it me or is it always night in Liberty City?

like 70%

Are you use the safe houses to save your game? That advances the day cycle by six hours, I used auto saves for most of the game.

Having finished, I still don't like how scripted many of the chases were, particularly
the last mission if you took the revenge route. It doesn't matter what you do until the two helicopters touch down, you aren't going to kill the guy before that. I'd prefer a cut scene that throws me to where I can actually accomplish something rather than driving so much just to wait for a certain sequence.

Like I said in the big thread, I wish it didn't default to auto saves after some of the branching path decisions are made.

Anyone else disappointed with the soundtrack?

And no, I don't want some smart ass xbot remark about your in game music feature...
Yeah, the soundtrack kinda sucks. I dig the Classics, modern rock, and Fusion stations. Everything else I'm not a fan of and the music on those stations could be better.

I haven't been a big GTA fan but I figured I would give it another shot and sadly I really dislike this game even more so than the others. The missions are so boring and I got really tired of driving back and fourth everywhere. The cars handle sloppy, the hand to hand combat is awful and I guess GTA isn't for me because I honestly don't see where any of the fun is in this game. The multiplayer is ok but not that great at least not something you can play for a long time.

Jeez, going through this thread, you would get the idea everyone at NeoGAF hates the piss out of this game.

That's why gaf is fun before big games release. The hype is always fun. Once they get reviewed highly and the hype is over... the hate begins. Don't let it fool you, these games don't get reviewed well because every single site and publication gets moneyhats, it's a genuinely amazing game.

the soundtrack really grew on me. I'm so surprised by the hate it's getting. Stations that I'm a fan of

- Fusion Jazz (biggest surprises, incredible tracks on this one)
- Classic Rock (shame for Queen, otherwise pretty good line-up)
- Indie Rock (Rapture, Savy Fav, LCD Soundsystem, Tom Vek, !!!, Unkle, what's not to like?)
- Ambient (this has Philip Glass, JM Jarre, Aphex Twin... so awesome)
- Funk
- All talk radio stations
- Vladivostok (also one I frequently pick)
- The daddy yankee stuff when I'm in the right mood

The only ones I really don't like: Dancehall, hardcore punk and Electro.

If you don't find anything you like in all these stations, then I weep for your taste in music :p

The single most irritating thing for me is the really really low master volume in the game. Even at max, it's not that easy to hear. I have to turn my TV volume up, which makes everything else really loud when I change channels. :(

My sentiments exactly...

Last mission:
the helicopter part
and no checkpoint before it, died 5 times now, and it takes like 10 mins each time to get to that part. FUCK.ING.HELL. Game design for that part needs to be shot, its needlessly infuriating.

wait, wasn't the last mission in GTAIII also like this?

If so, that is one of my favorite missions/levels in any game ever.

So far . . .

The cars are a little squirrelly . . . so easy to spin out.

The soundtrack blows compared to San Andreas and Vice City.

But overall I'm loving it.

Well, I don't have the hate some of you seem to have, but I'll put down something I've hated from all the GTAs: racing. Can't stand it. Ruins my fun in the game. If I never had to bother with (non-side missions) racing again in GTA I would be grateful.

I can't even pass the first one I've come across. :/

Except now it's 10 times harder with the shitty driving mechanics.

Of all the complaints you guys have, the driving complaints make the least sense to me. I just don't understand how you guys are having so many problems. The handling and physics of the cars are pure awesome.

* The soundtrack pretty much sucks. It's better than having a bunch of no-name rappers in SA, but it's nowhere near as good (and varied) as VC's.

* The driving physics. Wow....... so damn bad. I've never seen a car, or driven one, that controls so terribly as EVERY 4-wheeled vehicle in this game.

* The shooting controls. Why the hell they decided to adopt MGS's terrible pressure-sensitive shooting is beyond me. Maybe I just have bad dexterity with my fingers, but having to apply various levels of pressure to a trigger to pull out my gun + shoot my gun + put away my gun is a major pain in the ass.

* Why do I have to press A repeatedly to run? Why not just hold it down? Or better yet..... why not just let him run quickly?

I'm still trying to figure out if driving is just a difficult skill or if you're being handicapped. I can't figure out how to powerslide into a 90 degree turn. If it's just really hard then I don't really mind. If it's impossible then that's a problem for a game where high speed chases are the norm.

... Just turn auto aim off then. There you go. No more pressure controls.

It's pretty simple. Hard right turn + Handbrake -> Hard left -> Apply gas -> feather the wheel to control.

Those who complain about the driving haven't given it a chance. I've almost mastered GTA IV's driving now. I can powerslide like crazy, turn, and everything else exactly how I want to.

My friend says the driving is more realistic. Then I'd like to know why I can drift on Gran Turismo but when I try it in this game, going half the speed, I start spinning wildly out of control for 3 blocks.

Bonnet view also helps a lot, it did for me.

Yeah, I had the feeling that driving was a skill that had to be mastered. But even then, I don't think you can get away with handbreaking at full speed as much as you could in the previous versions, or even other games in the genre. I'd have to put some more hours into the game before I could decide if it's better or worse, but it certainly is different.

I have some issues with the game, just like every GTA. One things for sure, there's FAR less problems in GTAIV compared to previous games in the series. It's the best game this gen by far, and it's going to take a lot to top it on X360/PS3.

If GTA4 isn't severely patched I doubt it will be hard to top, Its a great game but no way is it a 10/10.

Multiplayer has become shit to me on this game.

People knock Halo's community and every match so far, I've been called everything in the book. And I've only played about 12 multiplayer games.

As for the gameplay elements:

Turn off the stupid "show me where team A is" unless it's something like Cops 'N Crooks. So I get rocketed (oh boi!) and I spawn. What's that? Another rocket? Thanks, I was hoping I'd spawn here to die only a second time in a matter of 5 seconds.

Auto-aim needs disallowed and no option to change it. What the fuck

Weapon placement needs fixed somehow. A team can sit by an auto-rifle or rockets and just sit there the rest of the match. No need to move. Why should you? The enemies spawn with a puny, worthless pistol and you have the BFG's.

And I've encountered lag in every one. It's as bad as Saints Row's when it released.

As for single player, good time so far. I've only completed about 8% though.

multiplayer

but maybe I need to give it more time.
I'm not saying its perfect, but..

Yes, give it more time.

The online multiplayer is completely different when you play with people who have a clue what to do and/or have mics.

I played online with some gaffers tonight.

It was a total blast.

I have the PS3 version and maybe have to start adding people to get a good gaf game going, but I jumped into four different games and the three free roam ones sucked while the chase stuff that someone tells you to do game wasnt bad.

I think free roam really needs everyone to have a mic or at least the game could have quick commands mapped to L1

Where are the missions that make me blow my load? GTA4 really works because of everything other than the game play - not that the game play is bad or anything, just that it's far from where the series has gone since GTA3. Why can't we have variety in the missions? Everything is essentially the same and we've already done most of it in GTA3, Vice City & San Andreas. How about utilizing the city for some new game play concepts. It would be cool to see something along the lines of an on foot chase mission, some stealth missions and so on. I'd love to see a mission set on the highway where the whole thing is jampacked with cars that are just standing still.

I've put about 10 hours into it and I find myself fighting with the controls more and more as I play it and I'm getting frustrated with it.

I've tried playing with both auto-aim on and turned off and it doesn't make a lot of difference. I always seem to be hitting the wrong button to try and duck into cover, or I hit the wrong button and exit cover and get blown away.

I just played 45 minutes and it was a complete waste of time. I failed both missions I attempted.

The first one was one of Little Jacob's first jobs he gives you. Drive a helluva long way to pick up a package, drive a helluva long way back, stash the package under a garbage bin, then 6 rival drug dealers begin to immediately unload on you with automatic weapons.

The next one I keep failing in one of the early Faustin missions. I've given it 4 chances now. Its the one where he wants you to kill a guy standing on a train platform. When you get to him, his friend unloads on you, so I finally figured out to kill him first, but then when I chase this guy down the stairs of the platform, 2 star wanted level goes off and I got cops chasing me, I either get shot by people behind me chasing me, get arrested by the cops as soon as I step down off the platform, or the guy gets away because I can't get to another car in time, fight off the cops and chase him down.

Is that Little Jacob mission the one in the park? I had literally 10% health and I managed to win. I ran as fast as I could up to the first guy, popped him in the face and kept running for like 100 yards. The enemies just stood in that spot, so I just sniped 'em. :lol Just use the godawful AI to your advantage.

The twist in the story at 25%...fucking stupid. Basically the exact opposite of what I would want to be doing in a GTA game.

This thread should just be that picture of a crying baby because that's what most of you are , whiners.

In a way this is a fresh start , the controls are different, the graphics are better, the scope is far larger and there are actual honest to god physics now instead of simply having very basic gravity and speed math. As such you practically have to relearn how to drive and such in the game but what I've noticed with each additional hour I put into the game you slowly figure out how to drive better. You still can hit the high speeds but the movement must be more sublte and breaking is almost completly different then the older games as well. I guess it goes without saying that biggest complainers are going to be the ones that loved the last 3 the most because they didn't have a problem playing the older ones.

If I actually had to register a complaint I'd simply like it if the voicees had a seperate volume tab so I could turn it way up without having the other sound effects become louder.
