Things you should not buy on the cheap

LASIK.

Seriously, I heard an ad on the radio a couple months back advertising "Only $200 per eye!" and then finished up with, and I'm not kidding... 'Results may vary." If there's one thing on this earth you don't want the results to vary on, it's surgery. Seriously, what the fuck?

Me and my boss (we've both had it done) just looked at each other and shook our heads. I paid ten times that much for my procedure, and I don't regret it for a second. You don't shop around for a "good price" for something like that. I shopped around for a good doctor... the price was irrelevant.

Going into more day-to-day stuff, pretty much any home electronics. Friends of mine used to buy those no-name super-cheap DVD players for twenty bucks, and it'd die just as soon as the 90 day warranty was up. And they'd go and buy another one just like it, over and over again. I got them a name-brand Blu-ray player for Christmas a few years ago, just a mid-range model, not even one of the fancy ones, and it's still running like a champ.

It's cheaper in the long run to get something that will last.

Toilet paper just because I can't stand that cheap-ass sandpaper like they use at the office. Same for paper towels.

so you're saying be rich or have a good job or else you should die

I am far from rich. I would rather save for a longer time and buy quality products. I try to educate myself and buy cheap when I can on things such as hdmi cables, where it's wasteful to spend a lot of money on.

Anything you use everyday. Toilet Seat for example. Spend $10 on some cheap plastic hinges and you'll be back spending more soon enough. Just treat yourself, that's your personal throne.

Pickles. When I was in college I bought a jar of pickles from the dollar store. I got the shits before I finished eating them and made a dead run to the bathroom.

Didn't make it.

Honestly, don't cheap out on almost anything. Cheap shit is cheap for a reason and few things are worse than buying something twice. Buy what you want the first time you buy.

Phone charge cables.

First thing that comes to my mind.
Charges faster and more reliable everytime.

It's not even that much, ever since I bought this $20 USB cable I no longer worry about chargnig problems outside.
Sometimes you think your powerbank is weak but it's actually because you got shitty cables that only charges at 10% rate when the wires are bent in a certain angle.

This, especially for small things the moment you have to replace it you've lost money. If you had bought the quality version at the beginning you would have come out ahead.

If they're anything like $1 cans of Vienna sausages, I understand.
Trying to get some stuff on a budget, but $1 cans of Vienna sausages are awful.

Oh yeah, and $1.40 Totino's pizzas are a huge step up over $1 Celeste pizzas.

Tires. The few square inches that your tires cover on the road bear all the difference between a safe drive and disaster.

Shoes. You should spend more on well fitted, comfortable shoes.

Task/Computer chairs: like many of us here, you probably spend a sizable amount of time sitting in one. Purchase something that will at least assist your posture.

Cheese. Velveeta isn't fucking cheese, godammit.

Office chairs, fucked up my back really bad for awhile using a cheap chair from the walmart website.

Agree on toilet paper, cheap garbage leaves shredded paper sticking to your ass and you have to use more to make sure it doesn't rip and send you hand straight into the shit.

sex toys are something you don't want to cheap out on, some cheap ones are straight toxic because there's no formal regulations for that stuff.

Cookware/utensils is another, i've been poor as shit and some of the cheap stuff I bought in early fall is starting to get rust spots on it. Gonna be a month or two until I can get something better though.

omg, creepingfear, i wasn't taking to you. i love you.
Yes you were. Now kiss.

Screwdrivers.

Ecigs, they tend to set on fire.

Mattress. I've bought cheap in the past but its a false economy and they're also not as comfortable when in use. Be kind to your back and wallet in the long run by getting a proper one.

There are quite a few items that I prefer to buy the cheaper options that have just as good or better quality than their more expensive counterparts, but I suppose that's for another thread.

To add to this thread I'd like to add :

Speakers. It's amazing the difference a good set of speakers will have.

Soft drinks. Is there any store brand cola that comes close to Coke or Pepsi?

Toilet paper.

Okay. Get the cheap stuff. I'll just use 4 times as much.

What about you?

The act of even buying toilet paper is being cheap, and gross.

Time to step up to flushable wipes, like the truly enlightened. It's 2017, stop being a savage.

Beer

You buy Steel Reserve, you're throwing up after the first can. If not, you're a fucking demon.

I used to drink 40oz of the stuff.

Do you hear the voices too??????????

You'd think so, but there are some cheap knives that are highly recommended.

America's Test Kitchen is very high on https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000638D32/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Less than 40 bucks for a solid chefs knife.
I have this knife after watching some random YouTube review of it. Can vouch this is the holy grail of kitchen knives at that price. I've always used whatever knives we have around but this is literally another level

Thanks for clogging our pipes and sewers with your not-really-flushable wipes.

Good trash bags are well worth the extra cost, just once having a trash bag break on you is enough. Especially since good ones are still only like 20 cents each.

Weird answer, but Cheetos. For some reason off-brand Cheetos are always pretty bad. Not sure of any other junk foods where the off-brand product is as vastly inferior compared to the actual

You obviously do not have a plumber acquaintence.

I've had first hand experience declogging toilets and drains. DO NOT put anything else in your toilet besides bodily wastes and toilet paper. That means: wipes, paper towels, tampons, maxipads and condoms.

Power tools. Don't buy the cheap stuff unless you want things that are often dangerous and frustrating to use and produce poor results. Spend a bit more and get tools that will last for years and produce excellent work all the while.

(I started building a deck last year with cheap Craftsman power tools. I finished with Bosch.)

I agree BUT it depends on how much you need the tool. I needed an Oscillating multi tool for a house project and I could not rent one so I purchased one from Harbor Freight for under $20. It complete the job fine.

Craftsman tools are often rebranded Dewalt/etc. It is worth checking out what the Sears brand is vs the retail brand. Just today I had to replace our water softener and the Kenmore model was $150 cheaper than the Whirlpool and they are the same machine.

How low they have fallen. Craftsman was a premium brand.

Also the budget brand of Bosh (Skil) is pretty good. I bought a hamerdrill about 9 years or so and still as great as new.

BTW, they aren't premium but Rudgid are good tools too.
