This year is the Best since 2008?

Still can't beat 1998.
I actually looked up some games that came out in 1998

The very thought that Ocarina of Time and Half-Life were released in the same year has to be some kind of bizarre coincidence that ultimately means 1998 will never be beaten. And that doesn't even count things like Spyro, Mario Party, Unreal, Sonic Adventure (JP)

Wow...

This year has a new Zelda, so that makes it better than 2007-2010. Then add in all the other games, and it's clearly the best year this generation.

Liiiiiiiiiist waaaaaaars!

'07 was awesome, but no one ever mentions the MAIN reason it was awesome: PS2 games! Persona 3, Odin Sphere, Devil Summoner, Chulip, even if I was the only one to like the last two. Whatever though, the only worthwhile metric here is to just count up your favorites, I don't know why other folks are stressing.

'09 looks like it's my actual favorite, (EDIT: of this generation!) although no one's listing my favorite games really. Also, as soon as I get around to playing everything and assuming September's lineup doesn't disappoint, (seriously September is CRAZY) '11 won't be lookin' too shabby either.

Also StarCraft.

I prefer 2008 myself. Fallout 3 and Crisis Core sealed the deal.

Also, I must give the obligatory, -first post nailed it-.

I really couldn't understand why anyone would say that. This year is pretty decidedly middle-of-the-road in terms of recent years. Not bad like 2009 was, but 2010 and 2007 were way better, and I'd say 2008 was head and shoulders above it too.

We should probably realize DA CYCLE though, 98+3->2001+3->2004+3->2007+3->2010.
All awesome godlike years in gaming

Next one is...2013. Or simply any year when Diablo 3 gets released.

This was only true up until 2007. 2010 wasn't that great. This year is better.

I don't know if its the best year, but with all the games I per-ordered, I'm already broke.

Thus far I've pre-ordered / intend to buy on day one :

Starwars The Old Republic Collector Edition
Skyrim
Deus EX
Warhammer 40k Space Marine
Assassin's Creed Revelation
Battlefield 3
Batman Arkham City
Uncharted 3
Dark Souls

Fuck me.

Money was not an issue this time, but free time to play all of those will be.

This year is the only year where I feel like I must* buy these games.

In 1998 I had neither the means, nor the substance to get all those gems, but now...now they're mine. 2011, how you bedevil me.

Dark Souls+Catherine+Skyrim+Disgaea 4+ Arkham City+ Dear lord, please stop!

This gen I would say 2011 almost rivals 2007.

- 06 average
- 07 great
- 08 good
- 09 average
- 2010 average
- 2011 great (so far)

New BF, New Zelda, New DE. That's enough for me, and then there's New TES, New UC, Witcher 2, and others I can't be arsed to mention, I can't see how people think this year is bad.

this year has been horrible. Portal 2 and infamous 2 are the only games i even consider worth playing.

I don't know, I thought OoT 3D and Crysis 2 were great. Not to mention the slew of quality XBLA games.

So far the only games that have registered for me this year are indie PC games. Frozen Synapse (which Im totally addicted to and will NEVER stop playing) and Magicka.

But there are two games coming out that are day 1 purchases for me - Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC and Dark Souls on PS3. Deus Ex and Demon's Souls are in my top 3 all time games list along with Super Metroid, so I am expecting to be blown away by these two titles alone.

Then there the other games of the fall I plan on getting: Journey, ICO/SotC HD, Battlefield 3, Rage, Skyrim, Arkham City, Uncharted 3... Im sure there are others escaping me atm.

I really do think this fall will be the best since '07. For me at least.

Thought I'd add a few more for emphasis. However, this year really did bring about some of the best and highest regarded titles in the industry. A lot of the games released in 98 still have major influence on today's gaming landscape.

Every current year is the best. You not only have all those great games that came out previously, but you have MORE great ones that come out that year.

It would be a great year if not for my underlying dread that the games industry is very quickly turning into something I want nothing to do with.

I know, don't let the door hit me on the way out, or whatever.

It's still way too early to call for this year. For example Fable 3 looked like it was going to be great this time last year. We all know how that turned out. The same with Gran Turismo 5, Epic Mickey and Final Fantasy 14 off the top of my head.

I'm not ready to say it yet. Last December people were saying this year was going to be amazing, and the first half was going to be the best first half ever. I played all the big releases for the first 6 months and the only one that I liked a lot was Witcher 2, everything else either sucked or was just ok.

And it's easy to say that batman, skyrim, uncharted, etc will be amazing but I'm not going to jinx it.

Early PS3 Adopter? I didn't use mine much until '08.

I got all consoles at launch and there was not much I liked that year on the current consoles. All that stands out to me are Lost Planet, Mario Galaxy and Uncharted 1.

PS2 on the other hand was great in 2007. GoW2, Odin Sphere and Persona 3. I spent most of 2007 playing old skool emulators and PS2/GC and a bit of OG Xbox.

anyway this year has been damm great so far.

Portal 2
Witcher 2
Bastion
Bullestorm
Dead Space 2

All top tier games, each showcasing some of the best of each respective genre. Also winter is coming.

Pretty piss poor list if you ask me. Portal 2 is the only unequivocally good game on that list. And it was a pretty unnecessary sequel. The first game will always be remembered better.
There's a couple of good games still coming out this year, but most of em are sequels so probably not something to get your knickers in a twist over.

6 from Edge. Quite a few other review sites panned it for its broken pacing.
8.7 from Metacritic, so no, not unequivocal.

Well I know that the best games I played in 1998 will FAR surpass the best games I play this year. That even though I'll greatly enjoy Gears 3, it likely won't compare to Ocarina of Time or Starcraft/SC Brood War.

Of course they did. It's a game with combat that doesn't hold your hand. Those will always review poorly with certain magazines.

Edge is also the same magazine that gives anything Halo a 9-10/10

Is this the best year for a gamer this generation since 2007? Honestly with so many awesome games that have come out and the rest that haven't come yet, I feel like starting with next week, DX:HR, the rest of the year is going to be absolute insanity. Half of us probably won't have the cash to fork over for these games and this year's games will probably continue into the next year if we don't have time or the money. What do you all think?

EDITED: Sorry, I did get the year wrong. My bad.

Go to Unkigamer.com and make your own lists...then you'll know if you're right or not.

I think it's going to be. Dark Souls, Skyrim and Deus Ex . . . first time this generation I've been excited for new releases.
