Titan Souls is an indie game from three-man development studio Acid Nerve which began life as part of the Ludum Dare Game Jam #28 from 13th – 16th December 2013. Over the months that followed, the concept was expanded to twenty titans instead of the original four, and the original Game Jam prototype was remade in the new engine and released as the above demo. The game’s central conceit is that both bosses and the protagonist only take one hit before they die, but in order to take down these giants you’ll need to work out their weakness and penetrate their defences. The hero has only one arrow, and he needs to stand still while firing it – he can collect the arrow or ‘summon’ it back, but again needs to stand still to do so. The overworld is devoid of life besides these monolithic foes, and it evokes a similar feeling to Shadow of the Colossus.

About the game:
Between our world and the world beyond lie the Titan Souls, the spiritual source and sum of all living things. Now scattered amongst the ruins and guarded by the idle titans charged with their care, a solitary hero armed with but a single arrow is once again assembling shards of the Titan Soul in a quest for truth and power.

Thanks to flashbandit16 for the excellent tagline

Thanks for the OT, game will be in my Vita tomorrow, can't wait. Any impressions/report on this version's performances?

You should feel ashamed for that title.

Will buy it as soon as PSN updates. I get the impression it won't be as open or deep as I wanted it to be but I'll probably enjoy it nonetheless.

Oh my, dat title, I see what you did there. Premise looks so interesting, still undecided wether to get it now or later.

That LP settled one of my issues with the Steam demo (which is a remake of the prototype) in that it seemed like a really long walk to get back to some bosses. LP seems to show that design was largely for the prototype and demo, and most walk backs are not nearly as long.

You should feel ashamed for that post.

Also, there is a demo on Steam if you want to try.

Just played through the demo, it was pretty fun. I'll definitely be picking this up but probably not today, need to finish a few other games first.

Great title.

Planning on snagging this for Vita when it drops today. I've been pretty excited for it, but have purposely avoided watching videos or reading previews. It looks like the kind of game best enjoyed as fresh as possible.

I also want to know this. I plan to get it on Vita but I need to know how that version runs/performs.

This has only boss fights like SotC? And you only have one life?

I'm so in.

Yup. One arrow (you have to pick it up or 'call' it back with Jedi-like powers), only bosses (more than 20 I think). You have one hit point, bosses have one hit point.

And OP.. great title!

God-tier title, OP. I can't think of a more perfect pun for the OT.

Having followed this game from its game jam origins to being able to play it on my PS4 tonight has been a real treat. I'm extremely grateful Devolver continues to partner with devs like Acid Nerve to bring these games to a wider audience.

Went to the Steam store page to check the countdown despite knowing it'll be a few more hours. Saw the Play Now button. Playing now. :)

Devolver is indie Jesus. Everything they've been putting out recently has been amazing.

The fact that they published Hatoful Boyfriend in the west is hilarious to me.

Just saw the quicklook of this game, seems pretty interesting. I am not sure how I feel about having just one arrow, but I guess they designed the bosses around that mechanic.

Cute thread title, just beasted the first four having already played the demo. I do agree with a handful of commenters and critics that it should be tap to roll, hold to run. Would be nice if the game went to titles instead of showing the splash screens when you quit. Definitely going to play some more tonight. The way I enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus was to beat one Colossi each session so I think I'm going to do the same with this game.

Really enjoying it so far. It's basically an indie version of Shadow of the Colossus or just the boss battles of games like Dark Souls or the Ys games boiled down to the essentials.

2015: the year of the perfect OT titles!

How long is the game on an average run? I think depending on the answer I'll decide whether or not to bite the bullet at that price.

Had a look at the sprite sheets, I'm working on a little mod to swap out the Xbox buttons for the PlayStation ones. If you rename an and devolver \Titan Souls\IMG\TITLE the logos don't show on the splash screen every time you load up but sadly the game takes just as long to load.

Been playing the PC version for a little over 2 hours now and so far I've taken down 9 Titans.

So far I'm finding the animation and art style in general to be very fluid and appealing. Theres some great use of colour, especially against certain Titans.

Controls perfectly. Your movements are tight enough that you never feel like your character is being unresponsive, but you still feel the effects of your momentum as you move.

The Titans themselves are all very unique and while some have been more challenging than others, the satisfaction I've gained after landing the killing blow on each one has been great.

So far I'm yet to come across any real narrative, but this early on in the game, I wasn't really expecting to find any.

My one real criticism thus far is respawning. I think this game would benefit from a system more like Hotline Miami's where you can instantly retry. I've found it to be a little bit irritating having to trek all the way from the checkpoint back to a Titan's room every time I die, but then this game doesn't have the same pace or atmosphere of Hotline Miami, so maybe it's actually a good thing that you have to take a short walk back to restart. Gives me time to gather my thoughts and analyse the reason I died, so I can plan quickly before trying again.

Anyways, really liking the game so far and look forward to seeing everything it has to offer!

I think this game has the potential to have some really nice experiences, but also some really frustrating ones depending on the person. I agree with one of the reviewers that said defeating a boss can come as a surprise. This can be both good and bad (wow through to is that it?)

I think there is a nice rhythm to the way the character moves in some fights.

I modded sprite sheet. I didn't do it all because I think the game only uses X and O in the menus and tutorial. Place it in Titan Souls\IMG\TITLE\fontsmall.png

good god, tell me you don't have to run all the way back to the boss every time you die in the second area? That's more crushing than the fights themselves.
