Because it looks like a fun game.
Forgive me if a similar thread may have been created recently, but I wanted to get a few things off my chest. Titanfall is a game that's been making a lot of noise as of late, with multiple E3 awards and all manner of praise from gaming publications. I just don't see the real reason for the unanimous praise and enthusiasm for this title.
Why is everybody so excited about it?
You know the game was hyped to death before the alpha right? It was crowned the next CoD since it was reveladed. I'm glad playable impressions have been good, but even before that Titanfall was being lauded as the next gen game.
This is another thread where people get together to bash titanfall, are there any other games that get these coordinated de - hype campaigns?
I feel this thread is kind of endemic of most active GAF posters starting with console gaming in the SNES or PS1 era and associating either old Nintendo or cinematic, story heavy singleplayer games as the prime example of what gaming is, and then not getting that people who do multiplayer gaming first might be very excited for something that looks like it tries to blend popular multiplayer shooter trends from gen 5-6 and gen 7 together in a way they feel looks engaging.

Like I don't see any threads ever asking "Why is The Order 1886 exciting people? It's a linear cinematic corridor shooter." because we just gave GOTY to TLOU. Similarly, people getting confused about how a character from a game that has 27 million daily players beat Link, a character from a series that never even remotely approached 27 million units sold, because it's a multiplayer PC game that's notably more popular outside the US and Japan ("the gaming countries") than within them.
I am excited for the game. I think the problem some have is the weirdness of saying things like "next gen doesn't start until Titanfall", a cross-gen game running on a modified Source engine that doesn't look particularly incredible and has a low player count.
I honestly think the backlash has more to do with the tone of the hype, especially among certain games press figures, than anything to do with the game itself.
To note I don't think there's anything wrong with not being excited or thinking they're not qualified.Well I thank you for your astute observation, but I don't think Respawn Entertainment is worthy of blending these popular concepts into their own title. There have been plenty of F2P games that used these mechanics extremely well and didn't receive the attention or praise they deserved. Now suddenly somebody leeches them for their own personal gain, makes it an accessible game to purchase and everybody is suddenly amazed as to what developers are capable of doing. Besides, this happens to be my first thread, so I think I'm allowed to express my views regardless of popular sentiment.
Who gives a shit about other developers' efforts? Apparently, RESPAWN's effort is really good. Everyone who's played it has had nothing but good things to say about it. Countless awards and superlatives.Well I thank you for your astute observation, but I don't think Respawn Entertainment is worthy of blending these popular concepts into their own title. You'd be surprised how transparent things get when looking over post histories. Then again, I'm quite sure that wouldn't surprise you at all.To note I don't think there's anything wrong with not being excited or thinking they're not qualified.
That statement wasn't targetted at you so much as the fact that this game seems to have the largest number of "Why are people excited about this?" threads and posts ever, even pulling ahead of Minecraft and LoL, and me speculating as to why.

People think it looks interesting.![]()

companies pay for forum posters and postive press, no way to know if the hype is real. The hype well has been poisoned.
Like I don't see any threads ever asking "Why is The Order 1886 exciting people? It's a linear cinematic corridor shooter."
That's very much the reason. It get's annoying when all you ever hear about is Titanfall, Titanfall, Titanfall. I'm going to buy, I'm going to play it, and it'll be a lot of fun but man, I can't wait till it's out so I can finally stop hearing about it. Maybe the Press can finally move on and start covering other games. So yea, I'm excited for it, but I'm getting sick of the constant coverage. I know people will just say "Why not ignore it" but come on, it's damn near impossible to avoid it.
This point actually does interest me although I'm probably going away from your actual point.
When I don't care about something I generally don't bother talking about it. There are plenty of popular games on GAF that I just don't give a shit about, but I can accept that my tastes are different to others and leave it at that. Given that I always find it interesting in Titanfall threads, like this, where people feel the need to state they have no interest in the game. Well if you're not interested in the game, why bother entering a discussion about it in the first place?
I dunno if this outlook makes me wierd or something. I mean I wouldn't bother going into a thread about Infamous SS or Dark Souls 2 and question people as to why they were hyped about the game when I wasn't. People can like whatever they want.
I'll tell you why I usually show up to try and combat the hype. I think infinity ward figured out an amazing formula for getting people hooked on a game. There is nothing else like it. Even though tons of people still play CoD, lots quit when they realized the emptiness and pointlessness of it. Now Respawn is here to do it again, and I think it's gross. I feel like a lot of people who already broke out of the CoD cycle are about to get sucked right back in. I'd rather that didn't happen.
I feel like we've had this same thread like six times now.
I thought these threads would end once gameplay impressions flooded the web. Guess not. It's one thing to not conceptually understand others' excitement (even for a game that - as its elevator pitch - is a fast paced shooter from the makers of the most popular fps ever, with giant robots and jetpacks), but if you can't grasp that people are genuinely having fun with it, maybe it's just not for you.
Right, I feel most of the time people understand why someone might be interested, but when something is popular among core gamers and they don't get it at all or understand the underlying industry movement, they might get confused enough to ask. This point actually does interest me although I'm probably going away from your actual point.

So you don't want people to enjoy games?
What?

Like I think if Bungie and Ubisoft did more to communicate that Destiny and The Division were largely MMOs we'd get more questions about why people are excited for them too, but they intentionally don't shine a huge light on that so people not comfortable with it don't ask.

1. Excessive publicity and the ensuing commotion: the hype surrounding the murder trial.
2. Exaggerated or extravagant claims made especially in advertising or promotional material: "It is pure hype, a gigantic PR job" (Saturday Review).
3. An advertising or promotional ploy: "Some restaurant owners in town are cooking up a $750,000 hype to promote New York as 'Restaurant City, U.S.A.'" (New York).
4. Something deliberately misleading; a deception.
Why there is minimal hype on GAF...
1. It's not coming out on PS4.
2. It's Origin exclusive on PC.
3. EA gonna EA.

BRB going to make an anti-hype thread for every big name game that I don't like because how dare others like something that I don't. Totallyserious.not

It does, but they still seem to have raids and random people directly falling into your play session which feels like how you'd make an MMO that has to function on gen 7 consoles.Destiny looks more like borderlands/diablo with guns than an MMO though.
Sounds pretty much like what 'people' have been saying about this game.

Like I don't feel you would ever be in a play session in Diablo or Borderlands and hit a point where other players you didn't invite in are already fighting the boss battle like the E3 demo.
Oh for sure, I was singleplayer only back until the notably late 90's.I think even old timers like me can have a change of interest when exposed to different games. For example, I'm more excited to try out EverQuest Landmark when I get home tonight than many future games. Of course, I grew a PC gamer first so I generally lean towards that platform in the first place.
