Tokyo awarded 2020 Olympic Games

Considering that this is more than half a decade down the road, anything could happen to mitigate any excitement I've got for whichever site wins. Japan's got more than enough problems to deal with, and the ruckus in Syria's going to bring some trouble to Turkey. I'd rather it got to Istanbul based on the nation's current economy (that and Tokyo's already had its Olympics in 1964), but it's difficult to decide.

—Of course, I just want to see a less Western-based set of Olympiads, though that's never going to happen given the costs of the event.

I like Japan but it would be awesome to have the Olympics in Turkey.

Well, they are having a good economical phase now and they have big staidums, and all the swimming pools ready. That's a plus.

Yeah. They could totally play up the "Games on TWO continents!!" thing.

I'd certainly be happy with either option. Istanbul is such a wonderful city, I was only there for a long weekend in 2006 but there was so much to see and do. I'd love to go there again and I think an Istanbul games would be excellent. Equally, I'd love to see what Tokyo would come up with. The thought of how they'd do their opening ceremony is very appealing.

Istanbul pros:
  • It will put a lot of scrutiny on Turkey and will probably make Erdogan do something spectacularly stupid that ends him once and for all.
  • Maybe shit will turn out awesome.
  • Olympics can do wonders helping to put a country on the map in more ways than one. See: Barcelona.

Istanbul cons:
  • Erdogan is a douchebag and I'd hate if he turned this into a personal victory to push his agenda.
  • Turkey is in a geostrategically complicated location. Plenty of bad people could use the Olympics to make themselves heard.
  • I have to deal with a couple of Turkish gents who are overtly nationalistic even by Turkish standards. I don't think I'd be able to restrain myself for the entire duration of the Olympics.

Reading about Erdogan has reminded me how little I know of world politics. Eternal vigilance, I have failed you.

But yeah, Istanbul for sure. A shame there may never be an Olympiad in Africa (who knows...).

I'm happy we didn't get them too, Olympics are one of the coolest things ever, but this country needs a lot of things before that.

Olympic games in Tokyo sounds awesome.

Ill bet on toyko. I wouldn't bet on istanbul due to politics. having it in toyko will not only bring money in after their whole nuclear thing. it really puts pressure on them to clean up their mess.

I wonder how their tourism market will handle the business though.

Istanbul is one of those iconic cities that deserves to host the Olympics, but there is probably a more compelling case that it should be in Japan.

Istanbul deserves it. Tokyo already hosted once and fuck being a nuclear mutant.
GO ISTANBUL GO. Fascist Erdogan haters are gonna cry tonight if Istanbul gets it.

Come on Tokyo. The way we're going, who knows if there'll be an Istanbul in 2020.

That's a joke, before someone replies with a serious reason why there'll be an Istanbul in 2020. Who knows if it'll be a safe place to travel in 2020 is a more apt question.

Such a stupid comment makes me wonder if you have ever been outside of your hometown.

And very glad of seeing Madrid out of this contest, by the way (I'm from Madrid).

Yep, it's a relief. More useless construction projects to funnel public money into the dirty hands of our corrupt politicians... yuck.

I do think they'll keep trying it, they need to keep wasting our money in order to fuel the brown envelopes.

But meanwhile, gotta enjoy these jackasses got some egg on their face. Fuckers on TV were even talking of Madrid going ahead with a full majority vote, lmao.

I'm for Istanbul, european city but in a secular(until now and i hope it will remain like this) eurasian country and it's a beauty.

Germany has officially backed Turkey up.

Put together, they weight 160M inhabitants. That's half of the US and 1/4 of continental Europe. On the other hand, Japan seems isolated.

The Olmypics 2012 opening and closing... I thought it's going to be embarassing, but it was magical. I have to watch them again.

Hopefully Tokyo can put on a similarily spectacular show. Go Tokyo!
