Tokyo Xanadu (Falcom) coming in 2015

It has been two years since I've played Xanadu Next but back then I did describe it as Souls-like. So it is nice to see that other people have the same impression. With that said, it for sure not for everyone. I personally recognized that it is a good game, I wouldn't call it great. At this point though, I wonder if it was the fan translation job or that I didn't truly understand the game mechanics (I don't recall ever doing a whole room lightning attack. That's badass).

Regardless, I welcome a new Xanadu title!

Is the PC version of Xanadu Next playable with a controller?

Yep. And unlike JoeFenix, I thought it worked very well -- the only issue is, you really can't do EVERYTHING with the controller, so when you need to do inventory management, it's usually more convenient to set the controller down and switch over to the mouse for a bit.

For regular gameplay, though, it's totally fine.

You probably just never learned that skill or spell. Xanadu Next has a crazy number of skills and magic spells -- the former of which you learn from new weapons, and the latter of which you buy from the store in town.

There is actually only one hub town in the game, and the camera is NOT movable therein (maybe inside the buildings, I can't recall), but it is almost everywhere else in the game, including inside dungeons. There are set rooms here and there that use dynamic camera angles for effect (like the town), but like, 95% of the game allows you to adjust the camera.

Awesome thanks!

What... is this game? Where did it come from?

You've definitely caught my interest!

Get this: Kure Eiji's the mind behind a line of ゴチャキャラ (gets translated as Gocha-kyara, or multiple/mixed-up characters) real-time strategy games expanding on the old ASCII/Koji Sumii game Bokosuka Wars. Around the time Herzog Zwei was becoming a cult hit for Mega Drive players, Japanese computer gamers playing Silver Ghost and then First Queen had access to an interesting mix of tactics (battles, exploration), logistics (army management, buying items), and strategy (moving armies on top of a board game-like world map grid, keeping multiple enemy armies from taking over points on the map). Here's some videos of the Windows version of First Queen IV, and the first Gocha-kyara game Silver Ghost also; FQIV's PS port got released (untranslated) by GungHo recently. You can see just how large-scale, hectic, yet manageable these battles are (players can manage entire forces via the leader or switch between individual units to manage them one at a time). On top of a battle system that provides both macro and micro, you have high-fantasy war plot-lines, catchy music from Masaaki Sasaki, and spinoffs like Dark Seraphim (KE's whack at a CRPG-styled gocha-kyara game) and Duel Succession (admittedly one of his most overlooked, a rare Western-style RTS from within Japan).

Kure Soft's website and contact info
Vector.jp / Rakuten digital download store

The First Queen Windows ports/remakes, as well as First Queen: The New World (his last big RTS) are ideal for sale on GOG or Steam, as there isn't too much text needing translation and, given the low prices on these stores, KE would likely want to price them low so more people could give it a shot and drive word of mouth. As for the legacy games (aka Duel Succession, Early Kingdom, Silver Ghost, Duel), they'd be out of consideration unless GOG wants older Japanese PC games, lol.

Can someone explain the battle system in Next....its a arpg but can you perform different melee attacks, dodge etc

Very straightforward. You can perform a melee attack chain, or use your equipped skill or magic. I don't recall there being much more to it than that, but there really didn't have to be -- the skills and magic are incredibly diverse, and learning enemy AI patterns in order to pick the best approach, avoid getting surrounded, etc. is surprisingly strategic.

The game is centered less on combat, though, and more on puzzle-solving and exploration.

Again, very Zelda, but dark.

It's like Diablo. You click on an enemy to attack. The only way to "dodge" is to click somewhere else on screen. Combat is really simple. It's the spells that mix things up.

It's the extremely well thought out, polished, clever mechanics and puzzly world that make this game. Think Zelda mixed with Metroid, mixed with Oath in Felghana mixed with Diablo (as others have said)

I'd love for someone to recover and preserve the original Xanadu plasticine models and scenery, mainly because they could be recast and then modified so they could be posed for a stop-motion ad.

Never played a Falcom game.

As a person with a username such as mine I suspect I'd be heavily interested in such a game.

Japanese game development revived?

Oh nice, Xanadu next is easily one of my top games of all time, so this has a tough act to follow. I'm a little nervous about platform but can't wait for more news.

Sacre bleu.

Well then. Interested to see platforms for this, but PC/PS4/Vita seems likely, judging by recent Falcom. And that's fine with me!

Never tried this series before, but between the Ys and LoH games I've played, Falcom can have all my money.

Falcom hasn't developed a PC game in years, I really doubt it will have a PC version. As long as it isn't mobile I'm good, but I guess PS4 would be preferable.

Unlike Tom I'm definitely concerned about it being mobile. Falcom hasn't dipped their toes in the water yet but it seems inevitable, that's where the industry there is headed. They already stuck with PC long after it was viable and were forced to move to consoles, I doubt they'll wait around again since they seem to be getting more popular.

I seriously doubt it. Falcom themselves have never developed a mobile game -- every mobile game bearing the Falcom name has always been the product of a third-party developer. And with Xanadu being a big-name franchise for Falcom (it's easily the equal of Ys and Legend of Heroes, historically), I can't see any possibility of this being a mobile title. I would be utterly SHOCKED.
THis series seems like a big deal on PC; you think they're making the exception here for this title?

Also, with the title and poster, I figure the city itself would be the dungeon. =/

Love love love that key art. Echoing the Eva vibes. My hype for this game is already maximum. Bring on your end of the world, Falcom, my body is ready.

Also:

I wouldn't be so sure. XSeed has a great track record with non-Kiseki Falcom titles.
And some Kiseki titles ARE actually coming out against all odds.
I wouldn't count this one out.=D

This is very accurate; with Brandish coming out soon, Origin having hit Steam a while back, and Xanadu Next having technically gotten that N-Gage port, the only non-Trails-related Falcom titles made since 2003 to have not gotten exported in some fashion at this point are RINNE, Vantage Master Portable, and Zwei II. The PSP version of Zwei!!, also, I guess, though technically that's a port of a 2001 title. It hasn't all been by XSEED, but that's an even bigger point in Xanadu's favor, if anything; it's quite possible multiple localizers will approach Falcom about it.

The vast majority of Falcom's non-Trails titles have gone overseas at this point. If anything, now it would be surprising if the game doesn't get exported, unless it inexplicably somehow ends up being a total disaster (hint: this is unlikely).

If this is indeed a Xanadu next in modern setting on the Vita, I'd get it day 1.

I loved Xanadu Next, I picked it up in 2007/08 while I was in my Trails craze back then. I still remember the intro music.

In fact the only games I played from 2006-08 were pretty much Falcom games only.

I painfully remember that in Xanadu Next there is an enemy that actually can level you down, you read that right, it's attack can decrease your level, since the equipment in this game has a level requirement, I remember getting almost naked by the end of that fight.

Hope its on PS4!

I remember them saying something about a PS4 title, and it was after the Y's announcement i think....

Since people are asking about it, and since I am SO PSYCHED right now that I really want to talk about Xanadu as much as possible, here's the dilly-o on the series.
Xanadu Next. Steam. Now.

Get it up there to build hype for the new game.

There won't be a better time to strike on this one.

This is very very nice :)

Really hope this comes over sooner rather then later. Now I have this weird urge to go boot up Faxandu.

I find it unfortunate that Falcom switched to handhelds far too late and by the time they pulled out a full switch handhelds have started declining while in the West PC gaming (for Japanese games) are rapidly rising.

Love that art, but I have knowledge of the series, just done a little bit or reserach and would almost like to play Xanadu Next.

At least stylistically, this looks like an absolute departure. And it looks stunning.

So now that Tom has come here to confirm that they will be translating the game, when do you guys expect a release?

=P, jk, but I guess I'll have to track down a copy of Xanadu Next now. That game got translated into English right?

Oh my god, how did I miss this? I bought and finished Xanadu Next like 2 months ago and it's easily my FAVORITE Falcom game ever. Felt like a wonderful hybrid of Ys' boss fights and storytelling, Diablo's combat and addictive skill/gear collection and Vagrant Story's atmosphere and puzzles. As long as this isn't some gunky mobage this is the best news I've heard in a week filled with good news!

Is the PC version of Xanadu Next playable with a controller?

Yes, but I'd recommend sticking with the mouse. Pad makes the game a bit too easy.

- 1987: Faxanadu
A Xanadu game sublicensed to and developed by Hudson for the Famicom -- thus the name, which is a portmanteau of "Famicom Xanadu." This came out in English on the NES, and while not technically a Falcom game, it's very much in the spirit of the series, and I've long said that Xanadu Next feels like a spiritual sequel to Faxanadu more than it does an actual sequel to Xanadu. It just has a very similar look and feel, but much more modernized. (Oh, and Faxanadu is a great game, so you should totally play it!)

I loved Faxanadu as a kid. Great game.

I've already absorbed Falcom's essence into my bloodstream, I live or die by Falcom. I've joked about getting Falcom-related tattoos but it's only a matter of time before that's totally not a joke.
