PS2 did nothing for me personally. It's game library on the whole was skewed towards casuals, those that play whatever genre is very popular at the time. Most people I knew that had PS2 just played FIFA, GTA or racing games. For me the best games that generation by far were RE4, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Paper Mario, Smash Bros Melee and F Zero GX. The lunchbox handle design and purple colour kept most of the casuals very far away from the Gamecube.
First of all, guess I gotta quote myself:
Seriously, I enjoyed my GC library, but bruh, COME ON:
Ace Combat 4 and 5
Ape Escape 2 and 3
Bully
Dark Cloud 1 and 2
Disgaea 1 and 2
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy X and XII
God of War 1 and 2
Guitar Hero
Haunting Ground
Jak and Daxter 1-3
Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Klonoa 2
Metal Gear Solid 3
Okami
Persona 3 and 4
Ratchet and Clank 1-3
Shadow Hearts 1-3
Shadow of the Colossus
Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
Silent Hill 3
Sly Cooper 1-3
SSX
Star Ocean 3
Tales of the Abyss
Virtua Fighter 4
Xenosaga 1-3
And there were some excellent non exclusive games on PS2 that never came to GameCube (Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry 1 and 3, GTA games, Grandia 2, Max Payne 1 and 2, etc.)
Ah yes, nothing but games for “casuals” up there.
Also, mind you, there are over FOUR THOUSAND PS2 games in existence (there’s a reason video game experts will often refer to it as one of the best places to find hidden gems). And apparently they “don’t exist” because your social circle played like ten games altogether between the lot of them.
The Gamecube, on the other hand, had only 652 games in existence.
And if games that apparently weren’t played by anyone since your friends didn’t play them (funny how so many of these games got sequels regardless….) don’t count by your logic, then the entire Gamecube console itself must not count since barely anyone played it in comparison to PS2: 21 million consoles sold versus 155 million consoles sold AKA the highest selling console of all time.
Also, in what universe does Zelda and Smash Bros. not appeal to “casuals”? You also list Paper Mario, a RPG, the PS2 was STACKED with RPGs. Also, LOL at calling racing games “casual”, but then calling F-Zero one of the best of the gen. Last time I checked, F-Zero involved racing…..
And you know what, I’m getting tired of seeing it listed (especially since my PS2 exclusive list excluded titles that got released elsewhere the same gen), I’m officially revoking RE 4 of its Gamecube exclusive status. The game came out on PS2 not that long after. If it released elsewhere in the same gen, not an exclusive.
Like, you make me think of the Principal Skinner quote: “is it possible I’m out of touch? ….no, it’s the children who are wrong.” Except you‘re saying: “is it possible back then I was friends with mostly normies? ….no, it’s the Playstation 2 that is wrong.”
Sorry to dump all that on you, and man I like a lot of Gamecube titles too, but at the same time claiming the PS2 library is “casual”?
