Totilo: The PS4's Cloud Save System Is Inadequate

I agree the cloud save situation is bullshit, really need to be unlimited.

This was a really strange sentence though
This is, perhaps, a niche problem, one that will only bother people who are rich enough to own multiple high-end consoles or charming enough to have friends who will let them visit their homes and resume playing in-progress games there

Is there really no way to manage your saves from one console on another. So I can't clean up my PS3/PSV stuff on my PS4? I don't get what kind of cloud system has such crappy management options.

Yeah the Vita save system is great, I'd prefer to see PS4 move in that direction (and stop having bloated as fuck filesizes!)
 
Yeah, it's bullshit. They also should have some server space to upload screenshots and video too. The screens never work on the What's New section.
 
I assume they are working hard on an update or even a new PlayStation Network and if they are, it will take some time. It's a very large software project, including simple functions like cloud storage.

It probably won't compete with whatever Microsoft comes up with, though (except UI).
 
Xbone cloud saving is fantastic but does anyone know how much space you get?

Looking on Microsofts cloud FAQ it sounds like you get 512MB and once full it automatically deletes the oldest cloud save.

As far as I know it's unlimited.

If its 512MB, that's terrible.

aren't those dependent on your social media privacy settings? speaking of which...there's that playmemories service/app for ps4. why not leverage that for cloud storage for the people who want to upload the raw video or image files somewhere? although i'd prefer something more people use like google drive, drop box, box.com, etc.
 
Yeah, the PSN cloud save system is a weird joke.

Steam has spoiled me but how about this:

  • Per game caps on saves (e.g. 1 GB of saves per game, not per account)
  • Cloud save sync after quitting a game (e.g. upload new save to cloud storage)
  • Cloud save sync before starting a game (e.g. attempt to download cloud save if a user is connected to a friend's console with no save and there is a save in the cloud)

I guess its like Phil Spencer getting a thread every time he acknowledges a tweet even though his response is just a lot of fluff? They are the faces of the company, therefore we need to assume what they say or dont say is sacrosanct?

Anyway, I repeat what I said earlier in this thread and others have echoed:
Fix the atrocious save file size on the PS3 and PS4 (outside of the odd game, Vita is pretty exceptional here).
Either make cloud storage unlimited OR drastically increase it.

that's not correct. its unlimited. they probably pulled that from the old 360 faq. for some reason they have a ton of duplicated pages with contradicting info

Yeah that link does say very clearly that MS offer 512MB of cloud storage. From that link:

It's strange that XBone users don't seem to be complaining about running out of space though, given they only get half as much. I wonder if that's because XBone game saves are much smaller, or if users on XBone tend not to play as many games on average (free PS+ games would be part of the equation there I imagine)?


EDIT: Looks like Microsoft's Xbox One cloud game saves FAQ is wrong, or maybe unlimited storage is only offered in some countries (not Canada).

They have contradictory information lol. If I had to guess it's something like 512MB per title. All my games combined (including Minecraft) are only ~300MB total so I have no idea if that's the actual limit.
 
That and the whole "can't delete alphas/betas/P.T. from my library" issue annoy me the most about the PS4.

I pretty much have to block any fighting game or games like LBP3 from cloud saving and doing it manually because they love to try uploading 100+ MB saves to the cloud.
 
This wouldn't be such a huge problem if PS4 game saves werent orders of magnitude larger than they are on other platforms. Yes, the upload system needs work, but they also desperately need to shrink game save file sizes. AC Unity on PS4 takes up something like 20MB, where the same game on the XB1 takes up about 100KB. The difference in size is absurd and it has made the 1GB cloud save storage unusable. For comparison, the PS3 has the same limit, but even after more than a hundred games I still have more than 800MB left.

It is such a disaster on PS4 that I turned off cloud saves altogether and bought a 32GB flash drive for a game saves backup.

That FAQ is just nonsense, which is probably why it was fixed in other regions. 512MB was from the 360. The answer doesn't even make sense. It says you have 512MB local cache and 512MB cloud but not to worry when you run out of local space because the deleted data will be stored in the cloud.

Anyways, per the leaked XDK, each title gets 256mb per user and then 64mb per device for device-wide user-independent storage. There is more to it but that is the gist. May have changed since though. There is also global storage for things like rosters that are not user or device specific

LOL no way it's 512mb on the Xbox One. Every screenshot and video you take is automatically uploaded to the cloud, there is no way Microsoft let that pass while skimping on the saves.

X amount of storage per title seems like the best solution, same way that Steam handles cloud storage.

I've got 78 games installed on my XB1 and as far as I know I haven't reached the limit on cloud saves. But I also do need to note that PS4 saves are idiotic huge, why does a game need 325MB for a save file, why even need 10.49MB of space for a save file? That's a big amount of data.
 
Remember that Greek metroidvania PS-plus game, Apotheon.
I played it for a couple of hours and then forgot about it.

It had 250MB of save data on PS+ cloud.

The worst part is the constant messages that save data failed to upload. Of course, the messages don't say anything helpful like "you've exceeded the maximum permitted storage".
And the lack of "copy all" for save data is awful. I had to updgrade my HDD, and copying save files one at a time (with very slow navigation lag in the save game menus) made me question the sanity of the OS designers*.

*insert stability joke here.
 
It looks like the burden of this whole thing should fall harder on the developers' side, judging from the info here. Seems like save file size jumped exponentially this gen, where 1 gb limit was never an issue during the PS3 era.

So what's happening these days to warrant quarter-gb save files for even the simplest of games?

I got 10 terabyte of onedrive space with office 365 for like $5.90/month.

The funniest part is that the space you use is directly proportional to how many games you've bought. No reason to have a limit when the people using lots of space are funding you heavily.
 
At the absolute minimum it should be something like 1GB of storage PER GAME.
It's basically useless as is.

Not even worthy of a bulletpoint on a feature list.

Oh it's far worse than that. There isn't even a way to see how much cloud space you're using on PS4. I literally have to use my phone calculator if I want to know how much I have left. That's pretty mindblowing. If I recall even the PS3 give you that info.
 
Bottom line, Sony need to figure out how to vastly decrease the size of PS4 save files, or give us more storage space. It's one or the other.
 
I always wondered why Sony limits it to 1 GB. From an infrastructure standpoint data dedupe should make storing this data cheap as hell.
