So I wanted to start off by saying, I think the moderation team has done a pretty great job with the changes of titles on NeoGAF. They are diverse, interesting, and compelling. From the Batman v Superman RT thread, to the PS4 bears thread, and to the Time Cube Redux - the title changes reflect a large spectrum of personalities and senses of humor from the NeoGAF usebase.

With that being said, lets talk about this thread. From a moderation standpoint, the title is the star of a thread. It's a great attention-grabber. When we look at the way threads are portrayed here, in community subforums, and off topic, we know a few things about them...

They're satirical.
They're silly.
They're not meant to offend anyone.
They're friendly to new users and old users alike.
The titles seem to be comprised of about 95% spunk.

Almost all of NeoGAF reflects this. We've had hilarious changes: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=375000

We've had fun changes:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=386274

We've had amazing original titles free of change:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=654903

All of this reinforces the great character you've built around the forum.

Then, out of seemingly, nowhere we have this change:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1201738

WHAT? What about this change has anything to do with the character you're building in forums? It's not fun, its not silly, it has nothing to do with memes. It just reduces the thread to another bland item on a list.

We aren't looking at a reddit submission here, this isn't a thread that is in part defined by taking itself seriously. This title says to the userbase, oh we've got all these cool diverse title changes, but at any moment we are willing to reduce them to newsletters to help boost our credibility as a website.

Getting changes into a major thread isn't a small task, it has to go through a report, a moderator, an admin, and finally Evilore. This is a team effort. And I believe the team is responsible for upholding the great example thread titles can set to the rest of the industry for creating a strong meme-based community.

I have a young Dennis Dyack fan that everyday when I wake up wants to browse the front page of NeoGAF again. He knows what threads have had their titles changed, and as he grows up, he can grow up alongside these jokes.

What I'm asking is that as you continue to add to the moderation staff and investment elements, you double down on your commitment to create strong meme titles. You've been doing a good job so far, but making a change like this to a title undermines so much of the good you've already done.

Keep it in, but make it optional. Then everyone is happy. Looking at Blizzard's forums, it looks like they made far more of their fans unhappy, so this may not have the been the best decision overall.

Are they going to censor her butt on the cover too?

It's not worth complaining about...and yet someone complaining was what got this whole thing started. Especially over something as benign as what her pose and her butt actually looked like.

Yeah. The difference is that one argument is basically "Aw man I liked looking at dat ass".

And the other is "this doesn't fit her character and is kinda uncomfortable, don't you think?".

ITS OK EVERYONE. VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT SRS BUSINESS

But for reals that's just a terrible thing to say given that the medium pushes new ideas and experiences now more then ever. They're not just video games.
You don't even have to argue that the medium pushes new ideas or experiences. The fact is, video games don't exist in a vacuum like a lot of the community think they do.

Holy shit this is amazing.

They put it in.... Look I don't really care either way(tracer has no butt to even get mad about) but anybody thinking they did this because they specifically wanted to is naive

You think developers never second guess their own choices and you're calling other people naive.

I think the interesting part about the efforts to make things "inclusive" for all is that theven changes brought forth typically end up excluding someone with a different view.

People's opinions are completely subjective, so it seems fruitless to try and please everyone.

It's just sad that in this day and age that people can't stand behind their decisions any longer without fear of being mobbed by the internet.

I'm not saying I agree one way, or another, with the change to the character. I just feel like, as a culture, we've already fallen on our asses and are speeding down so many different slipper slopes.

Between this and Mika, ass fans keep getting officially BLOWN THE FUCK OUT

Its glorious. Titties forever. Know your place.

Here we go :D

Now I'm even more unsure if you think Buzzfeed is a legitimate source or not.

censorship tho

There isn't a problem, it's just a particular vein of people who get mad about changes to games.

A bunch of other people cited it as well. It's legit. It's fuckin' WEIRD, but it's legit.

Yeah. The difference is that one argument is basically "Aw man I liked looking at dat ass".

And the other is "this doesn't fit her character and is kinda uncomfortable, don't you think?".

Mine is like... sitting over here, working on my own game, writing about games, having a lot of people try to backseat edit me... I rankle at the thought that anyone should ever listen to their community's demands. Make what you wanna make, y'know?

Keep it in, but make it optional. Then everyone is happy. Looking at Blizzard's forums, it looks like they made far more of their fans unhappy, so this may not have the been the best decision overall.

Evidently, everyone is NOT happy, so the thread happened. Let's have a hypothetical. Say there was a model viewer in the game with a BUNCH of risque poses and costumes. None of which appear in normal gameplay, none of which you can cause someone else to view intentionally. It's all 100% optional, no one who doesn't want to see it ever has to, but it's still very deliberate, yeah? This is basically that, except it's just the one pose. Just as I think you can reasonably imagine getting someone uncomfortable with the model viewer displaying Tracer in a light they're not comfortable with, or don't feel is appropriate to her, I think it's not unreasonably to see why this made them feel the same way.

if this happened after full release I'd be upset

but it's a beta, and a closed one. the whole point of that is to make changes on the go like this as per suggestions of users. if the removal is truly an issue they'll just put it back as suddenly as they took it.

Who's being excluded here?

It seems super insignificant. Who cares that it's gone but also who cares that it's there. She just looks like a girl who is owning her sexuality. Doesn't seem provocative, it seems more taunting.

Yeah changing this pose when the box art has Tracer twisting her spine to near breaking point to get both her ass & chest into the same picture... Crazy.

Haha I just went and looked that up. Pretty hilarious that it's not an issue, or even her yoga pants design, but one over-the-shoulder pose is the thing that'll corrupt the OP's daughter.

Either way I don't really see what this changes one way or another. Overwatch will be big or sink no matter if you tried to get some GamerGate or purity boycott going.

This is the biggest non-issue I've ever seen here.Being upset about the pose seems stupid and being upset at blizzard changing the pose seems even more stupid.

But then, that person is still going out of their way to get offended and then complaining about it. Fuck that person.

Also, technically, it would be impossible to make everyone happy, but what about all the people complaining about the change. Don't they deserve the same kind of consideration as the person who made the original thread?

Just remove all sexy poses from the game. It's not like people aren't alt tabbing to masturbate to SFM animations anyway.

It seems like the "sexiness" of the shot is really only an issue because she has super-tight, ass-hugging bottoms. If they just gave her some damn normal pants, it would hardly look that sexualized.

As for the change though, that's fine. I'm not that ecstatic or disappointed either way. The appeal to the poster's daughter in that Battle.net thread is just weird though.

The R. Mika thing I was thought was a bit disappointing, because the butt slap was fun and suited her character.

That doesn't apply here. Nothing about Tracer's character warrants blatant sexualization, and the victory pose doesn't really seem fitting. Developers like Blizzard are becoming more guarded against the impulse to pander to straight males as the default, and outside the context of that impulse, how does it make sense to put Tracer in that light?

She's still sexy, and some sexualization still exists in the game. By doing this, all they've done is polish the characterization a bit.
