Really the only way to attract a healthy playerbase with a rather niche MMO nowadays. Does the dev/publisher have any history with the model, can we expect something reasonable?

Well Nexon is the publisher, in Korea at least, and everything they do is f2p and they make mad bank. Dunno what they're like though, only nexon game I played was vindictus and that was all boosts and temporary costumes.
RO's F2P works pretty well I think, after they merged the premium and free server.
Yeah put more emphasis on grouping and less soloing
Then again people hate that
B> Ragnarok Online-like gameplay
Sucks about instanced dungeons though. I really miss it when you visit a dungeon and there are other players in them.
Also for the love of god I hope Nexon doesn't touch this.
As much as I liked finding other people in dungeons my experience in the RO beta keeps telling me no.
Trying to find a single place to level because every corner has people and it's a free-for-all of people rushing to the nearest monster that spawns. I really don't want to go through that insanity again.

The characters in those beta videos all look like they have a slowing debuff on. The animation speed doesn't feel like it matches the movement speed.
has anything at all been said about release date? The hype is real

The game is played via keyboard (with mouse to access UI).

New update from the main man himself!
Updates on the International Test
Translation stuff is great news: this is how you interact with fan translators and overseas markets, MMO companies. Take note.
- OTC (Open Text Client) will allow fans to edit in-game text on the fly and add new language support. Ctrl+Shift clicking on any piece of text will bring up text editor, which can be saved and then reloaded automatically by the game.
- OTC repositories will be created, allowing fan translations to be uploaded, reviewed and distributed in official patches. They hope this will allow people to experience ToS in their native language faster than any other method.
- Tests are happening to determine where international test servers should be placed, with candidates like Amazon AWS. They are working on a feature to allow players to login with Facebook or Google+ accounts. Once this is done, the test server should be launched.
- There will likely be two test servers to cover all territories.
- International tests should launch after Korean CBT2. The schedules for the Korean beta will be decided soon.
