Trump reverses Obama policy, gives back CIA power to launch drone strikes

President Donald Trump has given the Central Intelligence Agency secret new authority to conduct drone strikes against suspected terrorists, U.S. officials said, changing the Obama administration’s policy of limiting the spy agency’s paramilitary role and reopening a turf war between the agency and the Pentagon.

The new authority, which hadn’t been previously disclosed, represents a significant departure from a cooperative approach that had become standard practice by the end of former President Barack Obama’s tenure: The CIA used drones and other intelligence resources to locate suspected terrorists and then the military conducted the actual strike. The U.S. drone strike that killed Taliban leader Mullah Mansour in May 2016 in Pakistan was the best example of that hybrid approach, U.S. officials said.

The Obama administration put the military in charge of pulling the trigger to promote transparency and accountability. The CIA, which operates under covert authorities, wasn’t required to disclose the number of suspected terrorists or civilian bystanders it killed in drone strikes. The Pentagon, however, must publicly report most airstrikes.

The CIA first used its new authority in late February in a strike on a senior al Qaeda leader in Syria, Abu al-Khayr al-Masri, U.S. officials said. The strike in northern Syria on Mr. Masri, a son-in-law of the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, had been reported, but it wasn’t previously known that the CIA had carried it out under the new authority. U.S. officials are still assessing results of the strike.

Syria may not be the only place where the CIA is now authorized to conduct drone strikes. Earlier this month, a U.S. drone reportedly targeted two men in a village in Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan. The Defense Department didn’t acknowledge conducting the operation, as it typically would.

The Trump administration is also giving the military more authority to conduct operations on its own without first getting a signoff from the Pentagon or the White House.

Then why call bullshit? This article does not deny that the Obama administration used drone strikes. It is addressing a change in that policy instituted by the Trump administration.

That is the entirety of this news though. Nowhere does it say Obama didn't utilize drone strikes. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Trump has ordered more Drone Strikes since taking office than Obama did in a year. So all those people who were critical of Obama's use of the program must be literally shitting themselves to death at what Trump is doing.

Oh of course. He gets a plausible deniability on estimates of death tolls, due to there not being official Pentagon numbers and he can further destabilize and discredit the IC should some numbers/reports on drone strikes leak. Which they will.

That's the whole point of the article. The CIA, unlike the Pentagon, has little to no public transparency about who it's striking and where. It's a civilian run agency with power to wage a war without public accountability or transparency.

Then again I don't know if he's smart enough to even raise that limp argument. It's entirely possible there's an Occam's Razor thing going on here where he's just too lazy/stupid to be assed with intel briefings so he's trying to delegate that responsibility to other people as well.

Nuance is a thing, you know. You can laud people/orgs/parties for good things they do and critique them for bad things they do. It isn't a simple black/white dichotomy.

I'm not going to give Trump credit for giving an economic shock to oil and gas industry when it means that Enviromental laws are thrown out the window.

And I don't think there's anything praise worthy aspect of this mobster organization.

RE: Trump & oil/gas, no I am not happy with him on that either, but if he were to support a policy I agree with (like single-payer healthcare), I wouldn't oppose him on Single Payer just because he's Trump (note: I know there's a snowball chance in hell of that happening, just a hypothetical)

I am no cheerleader for the CIA, but you think they've done nothing to protect the country throughout their entire tenure? I'd hope that's not the case, but I'd need to do more research.
