Turok: FOV Issues or UE3 Default settings strike again!

Is this the reason why I felt like backing up from the tv constantly. And my eyes hurt too.

Yeah must be it... pretty pathetic :lol

Just a heads up, now you too can join in the pain. Demo is available on silver European accounts.

After playing this game for a little bit, I have to say, I am impressed. Voice acting is nothing short of unbearable, but the game play seems solid so far. I think this game looks really good also, I don't see where all the hate comes from, different strokes for different folks I suppose.

People are actually complaining of motion sickness? Man up, sissy boys.

Better that than last-gen redux with waggle.

Both are bad you're paying for crap arguing which one is worse is like asking would you like crap or crap that smells lemony fresh.

wow, didnt any devs learn from the bioshock mess or what? not that it affects me one bit, i played through bioshock and loved every second with no motion sickness, and i actually find it weird playing it post patch now, but making people who potentially will buy your product, feel sick, isnt a great move :P

:lol When I say motion sickness that is more of a broad term that has many different affects on people. For instance, My eyes water and I get a bad headache if I keep playing with this zoomed in view. After I stop playing my eyes are messed up for most of the day.

I get a headache...and I feel like throwing up. Had this issue with Bioshock as well as Marathon XBLA. Both games were patched with an FOV fix.

Actually I had this issue with Prey as well, but I think that had to do with the artstyle. :P

*shrug*

I prefer the original FOV for 16:9 displays. I hated what they did with Bioshock and, based on the 4:3 shot, I wouldn't like it here either.

You know Gears of War does the same thing, right? 4:3 mode shows more of the screen (but seeing the full Marcus model actually looks worse to me than having it slightly clipped).

Of course, based on the demo, a wider FOV might actually benefit Turok simply due to the frantic nature of the game.

Im posting this in an attempt to get the team to hopefully change the FOV (Field of View) before release, because in its current state I'm unable to play through it without getting motion sickness from feeling too "zoomed in". Its like the viewpoint is pushed out a few feet in front of the character. Please help bish!
So cropping a 4:3 image to 16:9 is what causes this 'too zoomed in' shit? Man, I *hate* that

Yep, But I could tolerate it on that because it was a third person shooter, so the effect was minimized. Its really only in First Person Shooters that it really affects me.

In lay-mans terms, yes.

Well, your certainly entitled to your opinion but I'd have to disagree from playing the games myself. When I play a widescreen game that is cropped in this manner I get the feeling that I'm are playing from a viewpoint thats a few feet in front of where the players head is. It can be very disorienting to play this way. Having known about this issue during the Bioshock release, I checked it out and confirmed my suspicions.

Theres a nice gif explaining this. Edit: Found it:

That image is looking at things from a Y axis point of view, but if you looked at it from an X axis point of view and added more side image for the 16:9 version, the perceived location would then be pushed further back. There's always going to be some change.

Dude, that did not even come anywhere near answering my question, but uh...thanks?
I do not understand the question. You ask "Why would they do it this way?". I say "Why wouldn't they?" There's no method that's going to making things equal for different aspect ratios, so there's always going to be some complaint about something that's seen in one version but not another, regardless of importance.

Better than paying three grand for the same crap with a shinier coat.

Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade does this same bs when you set it to a "widescreen" resolution. It looks so damn good at 1280x800, but I see less screen than if I'd set it to 1024x768. Unfortunately, the Soulstorm demo has the same issue :/.

Who pays 3 grand these days for such a thing outside of a select few most pc gamers go on what they need to play at the level they want. BTW that was my point in general this gen is a wash at the very least those on the pc can change performance console gamers not so lucky.

while i fully appreciate that some people don't like low FOV games, can we drop a few notions?

A: Widescreen doesn't always mean more picture. it never has. some films are shot to be shown in widescreen, but with space at the top and bottom of what is to be projected so that it can be shown on a 4:3 tv without panning and scanning. the widescreen version has less picture but it is the picture that is MEANT to be displayed. Bioshock was MEANT to have the FOV it had. it was meant to be played in widescreen. some people didn't like it, and the developers gave them the option to change it. everyone happy.

B: a fixed horizontal FOV in 16:9 and 4:3 has nothing to do with cropping.

C: there is no such thing as 'fake widescreen' or 'true widescreen'.

carry on with your complaints about the FOV of turok.

Downloaded the demo, and it feels like I'm playing the whole game with my sights zoomed in. It just doesn't feel right. Add in the stupid little bobbing of your guns up and down, it gives me a headache. I've played shitloads of FPS's and not one has given me a headache, expect for Turok.

Other than that the demo is a fuckin mess. Fighting a group of dinos that when they attack, knock you all over the place, in a dark ass cave is no fun. I don't know if they thought that having these powerful dinos knock you around or knock you on your feet was a fun battle mechanic....it's not. Especially in a dark ass cave, with the FOV borked to begin with, after a battle I had no idea where the hell I ended up after getting knocked down and all around.

The only thing that impresses me about the demo was the button mashing minigame when you jab your knife in a dino.

To be honest, I loved how the dinos dislodged you. They don't take off too much health, and serve primarily to unbalance and disorientate you. If you are fighting humans and know there is a dino nearby but cannot see it, the hectic nature that the fight takes on is sublime IMO

Why can't every FPS have this? It would prevent so many threads...

Exactly. Many games are designed so that horizontal FOV is more important than vertical FOV, so adding some extra to the top and bottom means seeing some more sky and ground while adding more to the sides means seeing an extra three enemies. There are valid reasons for doing things this way.
