Twisted Metal retrospective with David Jaffe

Really well done and actually learned a bunch of things I never even knew about the game especially the first one. Fruits and vegetables instead of rockets and bombs? 🤣🤣🤣Part 2 isnt out yet.

This is one franchise I want Sony to bring back. Especially with Shawn Layden's talk of understanding that PlayStation has been lacking in multiplayer for too long now.

lmao we had a bunch a bunch of street fighter guys coming in to do focusing testing and these guys were mean as shit old school neogaf had nothing on these guys. :messenger_tears_of_joy: 9:13 time stamp

I really liked this franchise I personally think the ps3 game just felt out of place they were making a ps1 game on the new engine and not actually taking in all the QoL changes that happened in gaming over the decades.

After how it went with the PS3 one I doubt the franchise is ever coming back. I always hoped for Twisted Metal Black 2 but unfortunately I don't see it happening.

TM on the PS3 i didnt even bother trying. Thing is, today more than ever the multiplayer focus would be very popular. But for the love of God, DO NOT touch the roster. Even if its always online I want my full roster and theres no better time than now to get a reboot. I have no idea what they were thinking of having only 5-6 characters on the PS3. It looked half baked.

But yes, TM Black2 would be amazing. Just add some color, the original was a bit of a drab. I liked the vibrance of TM2. Grungy yet colorful.

This was a really good watch.

I completely forgot they even made TM3. I remember seeing it all over my local Blockbuster at the time too and still spaced on it. I legit had no clue they made TM4. That game looks absolutely awful. In my mind the series went straight from TM2 to Black. TM1 and TM2 still hold a lot of memories for me. Many nights spent with friends playing those games.

Eagerly awaiting the second part of this.

Loved me some tm2 and rogue trip back in the day but much like socom the series lost it's way. In all honesty a lot of the features that the latest twisted metal toted were in rogue trip which was like what 15-20 years earlier. I wonder what happened?rogue trip developed by the real innovators behind twisted metal? I get it, sweet tooth, Spectre, blah blah blah but these games are not about story or characters but gameplay and level design and something was lost after tm2.

This was a great video. Loved TM1 and 2 back when they came out. Really looking forward to part 2 and 3 of this video

Nice post, OP. Twisted Metal: Black was the entry I played the most.

I read a while back that they developed a sequel (Harbor City) but it was cancelled.

You guys really fucked up if you skipped TM 2012, outside of connection issues it was incredible. Best multiplayer, controls and gameplay in the entire series.

I'd do anything for a remaster or new entry.

It's interesting listening to this bit. Jaffe relates how he was forced to remove the FMVs in the original due to opposition from religious conservatives. They objected to the women prancing about in their underwear, but were apparently fine with the murder and destruction in the game itself. Same shit, different prudes...

I thought they were bikinis, not underwear?

Those FMVs were actually included with the PS2 re-release of Twisted Metal: Head On, they are good cheesy fun.

That was an excellent video by the way.

Are these videos uploaded a month apart, then? So far it's been two weeks. I'm eagerly awaiting the second part when they supposedly talk about the PS2/PSP generation of Twisted Metal games.

With a decent story mode to play through and a well thought out multi-player, another twisted metal could do for that franchise what God of War did for its own.

  • TM: Black was freaking awesome.
  • I'd love a new gen TM release.
  • Not sure it's possible for Jaffe to speak a single sentence without a swear.
  • Lol...they mentioned Warhawk in this; loved that game.

Man it's hard to listen to the developer. It's like he can't say a sentence without extreme profanity. Makes listening to him off putting and he just sounds like a tryhard.

Yeah it sucks to wait so long between 2-3 parts but if its one hour long then I guess it was worth waiting.

Wow. WTF. From Kotaku:

"Sony is working on a Twisted Metal TV show. The chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Tony Vinciquerra, confirmed it was in production during a Q&A with investors earlier today. Hopefully it's a reality TV mockumentary about a contest where everyday people battle in deadly car duels in pursuit of the American dream. "

I will love to see TW back again.

I remember back then also that the music was awesome to. My favorite was the Pitchshifter - "Microwaved" (Washington D.C.) from Twisted Metal 3.

I don't get why 1 bad game equals the death of a franchise (wasn't even a bad game, just wasn't received well), especially considering how many solid entries there were. This formula can work again.

I was referring more on how the game performed sales wise. I imagine Sony would be very cautious on greenlighting another entry after how the previous entry underperformed.

I think he got all the Jaffe stuff from old vlogs by Jaffe and an interview that was in one of the games. I've never liked Jaffe's self centered "only the Twisted Metal games that I worked on were any good!" stance, or that a lot of fans seem to eat it up. Twisted Metal 1 sucked, it was a terrible game that only passed as good because early PSX games were pretty much universally garbage. Twisted Metal 2 was good, 3 was good, 4 was great, I never got the chance to play Small Brawl (but the reviews were bad), Black wasn't good, the PSP one that got ported to PS2 wasn't good, and 2012 needed a lot more polish. In a series that made it to 8 installments only by the skin of its teeth, of which only three were good, the guy who made 5 of them but only managed to take part in one good entry isn't the person who gets to say what the series is about. And I say this as someone who likes Jaffe's influence on the games that he makes.

QoL changes that happened in gaming over the decades.
Reducing control customization options really hurt the PS2 and later Twisted Metal games.

Don't believe Jaffe's lies or this fanboy's bias. Twisted Metal 4 was great. It had great controls, cool levels, fun weapons, great graphics for the time, and a cool soundtrack. It's the best Twisted Metal game.

I remember being pretty psyched for that game and the MP just didn't work at all. Killed the game right out of the game. It was a disaster.

Still I find it hard to believe that this series can't find a place in today's environment.

I don't know if Dave is interested anymore. He often has great ideas but lacks the funding to really drive it home. I'd love to see a bigger budget Twisted Metal game.

One of the game(s) you instantly thought of when you heard the word "multitap".

Jaffe helped grow the PS brand with all his great game(s). The franchise needed a retrospective because it gave gaming one of its many different unique personas. I had the best time with Twisted Metal Black.

Damn, this is way more interesting than I thought it'd be. It's normally kinda hard to listen to Jaffe talk for long periods of time, so having this guy cut it up and briefly describe things helps the flow.
