Twitter says Super Mario Bros movie is mediocre, boring, uncreative - the Live action movie was better

I have just come back from seeing it a few hours ago.

First of all, I was the only person there. No joke, there was nobody else. That shocked me a little. Because the movie is very well promoted. There are commercials. And it is a big theater, and there were ads and wallpapers everywhere about the movie.

Ok, so.. it's a good movie. It's not deep and it doesnt take itself seriously at all, but it's fun to watch. It's good to take the kids to see. It's a little bent to the young side. With Pixar movies they usually throw a little bone for the parents. This film has less of that.

I will say though, it's better than other Illumination films. It ain't perfect, but it's my favorite from them at this point..
and here is me unable to book a ticket because my local teather was sold out yesterday, so I booked for today, cant wait to watch it in a few hrs.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.

This is Brazil though. And Nintendo culture is very small here. Mostly due to videogames being taxed to hell and back. Few people here can afford them. Even with piracy.

Wasnt the Master System really popular there?
Yeah. They produced them locally, and added the games to the system memory. That solved a lot of cost related problems. The hardware being manufactured within the country reduced taxes, and the games being in the memory reduced the software cost to practically nothing.

Other systems didnt have this luxury. There is a lack of interest from the big companies, especially from Nintendo. Although that has been changing recently, slowly.

Probably was the most popular console in Brazil and South America.

This is in fact because a mix of factors, both Master System have a decent catalogue, Sonic becoming huge popular here and most important in that time Brazil was a very poor country. Master System was a cheap console for mid class families. Since this, Tectoy did an amazing job porting and localization games here. After Mega Drive, Master System price get drops and become more affordable for low class families. Most of the Master System start to come with pre-installed games (My was a Master System 3 with Sonic 1 pre-installed).
I have one photo from here showing both a localization brazilian Master System and a Mega Drive model 1.

Lol yeah. There is a lot of piracy going on. But from what I have seen kids like Sony systems more. The PS2 illegal market was huge here, for instance.

I couldnt disagree with you more. Illumination are the best animation company worldwide (alongside dreamworks). Pixar fell off a decade ago.

Pixar movies over the past decade (most of them box office flops):-

Lightyear
Turning Red
Soul
Luca

They fell off a cliff and stopped making fun interesting family movies in favor of pushing agendas.

Source: I have a 5 year old kid and have watched every single animated movie released over the last 5 years.
Oh you're talking about recently? Yeah nah illumination has yet to reach the peaks of quality of pixar in actual filmaking legacy.

I dont just consider recency bias. Because to be honest alot of animation recently has diminished in terms of storytelling

I ask myself, sure pixar is lamer now, but has illumination ever done a finding nemo in their existence? Or do they just keep it at cutesy films. Have they even done a shrek level of film?

Despicable me comes off as a saturday morning cartoon by comparison. So yeah everything got worse lately, so illumination seems better than they really are. But I typically compare one studios best work, to their best work.

On a side note, Mario movie adjacent, the only thing i've really heard about it was local business. Someone posted on Reddit that their showing of this was stopped on Wednesday and police escorted everyone out due to a shooter. This is, maybe 20-30 minutes from me? Been happening a lot lately. So now I think when I hear of this movie, i'm probably going to always be reminded of this.

If I had to nitpick one thing, and this is so minor, it would be the new design of donkey kong and the fact that he talks. The rareware design is timeless imo and I think he just works better as a silent character.

Also thought it was really touching that Iwata was honored in the credits, even after all these years. The love for him at Nintendo is real.

Sony has that cool kid esthetic. They have always had more mature, weirder stuff. Sony is very good at that.

I have always found it interesting that the PS1 and PS2 were pretty easy to emulate. Very little copy protection. They only started encrypting discs with the PS3.

Yeah I actually really liked DK being voiced by Seth Rogen. Something about his voice and that laugh he has, it just feels so "weed boy being high" kind of vibe. Always makes me giggle.

Also it was amazing having Diddy and Dixie Kong in the movie, even if for a short moment.

Was talked into to seeing this pile tonight by friends and we left a little over halfway through. So bad that its not even bad enough to be good.

Judging by the crowd though this thing is going to make money it doesn't deserve.

Why do you even see movies that you clearly don't have any interest in? I don't think I've ever walked out of a movie, because I just don't see shit movies. If they happen to be not so great, I sit through it then pick it apart.

Sounds like you just want to shit on things for mad internet likes.

I never watched a movie in 4DX before and decided to use Super Mario to try it out. I thought 4DX complimented this movie very well. The story wasn't mind-blowing and for this type of movie I didn't expect it to. It wasn't boring one bit and I was entertained throughout. Although the pacing was a bit too fast for my liking as some scenes could've been a tad bit longer and fleshed out. I enjoyed the all the voice cast except for Cranky. His voice sounded too young and didn't fit the character. In the end I give Mario 7 🍄 out of 10.

Yeah, sounds like a real blowhard.

Temet Nosce.

Just got back. I think they missed a trick with the story in some respects BUT I don't care. The platforming bits were nuts and I know I'm being manipulated but the callbacks etc. are a joy to sink into. I actually groaned aloud when Cranky Kong revealed the SMW-esque map.

Way, way better than the Minions stuff.

Also - and this is huge for me - it was just so pleasant to see something from my childhood not only treated with respect but genuine passion. We've had over a decade of Hollywood/TV doing its best to 'subvert' beloved shows, in the process shitting all over them. The people behind this clearly love Mario as much as I do.

The first green pipe reveal when Mario is looking into those depths... that captured the feeling I had in 198x when I first played Super Mario Bros 1.

So I just saw it and it was EXCELLENT!

Perfectly pace, with humour, great animation, princess is a kickass character, power ups we know, rainbow road, fucking shortcut on the rainbow road, funny nods to other franchises e.g. Terminator 2.

I don’t understand how pitiful your life has to be not to like this movie. WTF?

My kids had a blast.

All due respect, but I’m really curious what you were expecting this movie to be? It did exactly what it needed to do to please fans. Best video game movie I’ve ever seen.

I just saw the movie with my kid. My son really liked it, and I really enjoyed it myself. The Easter Eggs are fucking everywhere lol, same with the music choices. I got used to Chris Pratt's voice quickly. As a late 30's man, I just couldn't believe that a Mario movie of this magnitude would be possible.

FYI, I loved the Super Mario Bros movie (1993) personally.

Just finished it.

It was okay. It’s fan service: the movie.

Paper thin plot, nonsensical character motivations, very much so a kids movie… but it was entertaining, colorful, fun, and provided laughs.

Super safe, super focus tested, and tailor made to please everyone and make bank at the box office.

It’s a 5/10 but I had fun.

I agree, to me nobody has surpassed WALL-E, it's the greatest animated movie ever created imo. But I don't think current Pixar could ever make it now.

Movie is up for pre-order on digital outlets for $30, meaning it likely comes out for purchase within the next couple of weeks. Maybe as early as Friday.
