TYRANNY |OT| Sometimes, Evil Wins [Tiers For Fears]

I'm a couple of hours in, having just met the two Archons and
saved Lantry by helping him in combat
. Faction-wise, I've leaned towards the Scarlet Chorus whilst still maintaining an independent honourable stance, leading to a slightly frictional, but favourable partnership.

Impressed with the depth in the spellcrafting system and also the talent trees. Already planning my advancement in that regard. The locations seem to have much higher fidelity and 'purpose' than Pillars of Eternity did. Whereas Pillars of Eternity looked lovely but had a square mile of useless trees and grass in many locations, Tyranny feels a lot tighter and well-crafted in that regard so far.

So I was able to play after all, but all the load times take forever for me. Also once I am on a new screen I still get loading hitches when I interact with new characters. Really not a nice experience. :(

I honestly don#t know what's wrong.

Is it on an SSD,l? I don't have any issues

If the pacing continues in exactly the same way as it's been for the eight hours that I've played, it's more like maximum rereadability. It's getting to the point where I'm not sure I'm going to bother with Obsidian anymore. I'm reading a book that has a few combat sequences every now and then than actually playing a game.
Sounds great!

I'm not having that issue either. I would suggest getting in touch with Obsidian's support and see if they can do anything or work it out. I would have said to check the steam community, but there are barely any technical issues reported other than game bugs

Two people have now told me that the writers must be big fans of the Black Company books, which makes me even more excited to dive in tonight and this weekend.

It's getting to the point where I'm not sure I'm going to bother with Obsidian anymore. I'm reading a book that has a few combat sequences every now and then than actually playing a game.

I also don't know why Baldur's Gate is always cited by both them as well as cRPG fans as far as what Obsidian has been trying to make lately, because Baldur's Gate was way more balanced in terms of combat and exposition, and at times Obsidian seems to just be going overboard with dialogue because the assumption is a) Oh, cRPG players just love thousands of lines of text, where not even half of it adds up to anything truly interesting or in any way ehnaces the plot, and b) it allows them to have the "game" last 30 - 40 hours. The pacing has been as bad as Dragon Warrior VII's first two hours, and that game was legendary for terrible pacing.

Also, unless I've just been doing it wrong this entire time, even when there actually is combat, the UI and inability to rotate the screen makes it a clusterfuck for targeting more often than not, and it's a bit too busy.

They say the opposite. Part of why Tyranny is the way it is, is because they have the freedom to not be like a "classic" CRPG, like "Baldurs Gate" - which the kickstarter of Pillars ensured it would have to be, but that isn't the mandate for Tyranny, hence all the changes. IMO there is plenty of "game" for me, just as there is plenty of "book". It's a great balance to me, but then again I don't really think I've every analysed that in these games - it either makes sense or doesn't for the particular game, and in this case so far it has been pretty awesome

Two people have now told me that the writers must be big fans of the Black Company books, which makes me even more excited to dive in tonight and this weekend.

Now I want to know more about these books

sounds ideal.

Are there still so many descriptions? I didn't mind PoE's mountains of text per se, but what really annoyed me were the constant dialogue descriptions of everything like [The wind blows cold. XYZ hears something and slowly turns. Shock is in his face. He mirrors ZYX closely, and eventually speaks] dialogue option 1 / 2 / 3 / 4. Etc

(It's weird too because I kinda liked that in Shadowrun but in PoE it bored me to death eventually to a point where I just skipped most dialogue / wanted to get it over with quickly).

Actually, that is very exciting.

They are really good.

Highly recommended.

i installed it to my regular hard drive to save space on the ssd. think i might just redownload it to the ssd when i get home, it was only ~5gb and those load times were def. irritating.

i only played for about an hour but the game seems very cool.

That's strange. Descriptive writing is one of the things that made PoE one of my favorite RPGs of the past decade. The style really set it apart from most anything in the industry.

While I liked Pillars of Eternity, I never really loved it. The Story wasn't that great and the combat was less tactical then I remembered a Baldur's Gate game was. I mean, all I had to do is almost used the same spells over and over again every combat.

Is this game better?

I will definitly pick up the black company. I fell in love with the dark and cruel world of Tyranny.

If you disliked PoE combat, then you're going to REALLY dislike this combat. 'nuff said.

Played this a bit last night, but decided to refund. Just isn't anywhere on-par with PoE.

Lol. Sounds great!

Will definitely check out the Black Company books too.

e: Gotta agree with the others who mentioned it, the highlight mechanism is used in an amazing way with The Voices of Nerat

Comng from Divinity, the combat here is boring as fuck.

Fortunately the world building and story and character interactions are quite a bit better, so I like it so far.

Lol I started this late last night and just got through that choose your own adventure sequence and it reminded me greatly of Black Company. I can definitely see the influence.

I just read some reviews online and it doesn't seems like the best books ever...

Not sure what you're reading but Black Company is pretty widely considered to be a fantasy classic. And if you are a fan of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, Black Company was a big influence there as well.

Anyone know if the AI ever use any of the quick items? It's easy enough to pause the game and order your companions to chug potions, but it'd be nice if they were smart enough to drink them by themselves if they're close to death.

The Malazan books are daunting as fuck lol, hope the BC books are a bit easier to read.

In the spirit of Alpha Protocol (and most Obsidian games) I'm doing a quick "evil" playthrough before doing it for real- and it's a lot of fun! After the dozens upon dozens of hours in The Witcher 3, it's refreshing to play something that clips along much faster. World feels more compact than Pillars, and I think that benefits it as well.

After Age of Decadence, I'm a little disappointed that I can't play as an even worse person, but it's still interesting to see how much you can do.

-I'm trying to insult/kill all party members, do as much "bad stuff" as I can without ever recruiting them. So far
Verse just disappeared, Barik's mad at me for ignoring him in Tunon, I abandoned Lantry in the camp, so I assume he's dead (and also a potential party member?), and I killed Eb in the spire.

-Going for
anarchist
path, hopefully killing
all archons
along the way. I'm assuming I won't be able to kill Kyros, but we'll see!

-The tutorial says that solo play is possible, but not recommended. As an unarmed/dodge specialist, the tutorial was absolutely correct.

Like Protocol, I'm pleasantly surprised by how the "hate/kill everything" playthrough is going, and I can only imagine how much content I'm missing. Plaything Protocol the "right" way was almost like a whole second game. I felt awful about
Lantry
, so I'm eager to redeem myself next round.

Black Company is easier than Malazan I would say, but maybe not drastically so. Like Malazan though it's worth the effort if you like that kind of writing and world.

Oh man, I love that you don't have to constantly kiss your companions' asses to gain loyalty. That drives me nuts in RPGs. In Tyranny I was critical of a follower's actions and gained loyalty for telling it straight up!

Is there a consensus yet on which Wiki is going to be the go-to destination? All of the current contenders (Gamepedia, Paradox, Fextralife) only have a barebones skeleton of information at the moment.

Hmm mixed feelings with regards to whether or not I should pick this up. I don't dislike heavy reading in games on principle, but there has to be a payoff. I loved Planescape, for example, but I couldn't really stick with Pillars because so much of it just felt pointlessly dressed up or obfuscated to tell, what was at the end of the day, a pretty "normal" story. Some of the nonsense words and name soup in that reached like.... Rick and Morty levels at times.

"The duc of Ergeflasz led his soulcypher battalion through the Dyrglwoods and across the realm of Sharganglen to battle with the runewizards of Err Globbenfath on the Day of Silentwinds."

Not a direct quote but like... not always super into that style, personally.

from what I played last night... this is kind of like that actually but the made up words are all highlighted and you can click them to read a background paragraph of what it means.

My patience for stuff like that is entirely down to quality. The portrayal of the world in Tyranny seems pretty damn cool so far.

How exactly do you talk to your party members in this game? I thought I saw a tutorial bubble to do it but I cannot figure it out.

PoE definitely got tiring after a some time, and I've had difficulties replaying it. Like the others mentioned, Tyranny has had some of that so far, but personally I've found it much more interesting - probably because the setting and world is much more interesting than the super vanilla stuff PoE had - and, like animlboogy said, much less dry.

Click the small speech bubble icon on their portrait when you've got the member/the whole party selected.

This game's dialogue gets a bonus over Pillars just for the words not sounding like Eir Glanfath and the various other awkward world specific lingo that game was loaded with.

Wish there was a bigger and/or less blurrier character inspection screen. My guy looks fucking badass with the new stuff I just found, but man, that tiny, blurry model viewer on the character page doesn't do it justice

Also the Scarlet Chorus are great. The best.

Really cool art style this game has, normally I like colorful environments but this makes a darker theme look cool too.

Really pleased Obsidian gets the funding to make games, given how opposite their games are to modern AAA releases.

And thank the gaming gods for that!

Unfortunately was still stuck doign work last night so I didn't get past the conquest phase. I wish I could have saved the game during that process :( Well, it was fun, so I'm happy to start again tonight.

Another thing, the trial with Junon ended up being pretty hilarious. I had killed
Fifth Face or whoever gives you the achievement
. The Archon asked for my testimony, then I lied and insulted him and everyone in the court. I gave no justification other than that I wanted to kill him, and he still says I'm innocent! Junon's such a nice guy, I better be able to ram my fist through his kind heart.

Edit: I also like how refusing to accept quests/help actually seems to have an impact. Unlike almost every other RPG I've played, they can get mad at your refusal, or you can just kill them outright and still have that counted as a way forward. Even in New Vegas, killing quest givers didn't do much beyond blocking that content off forever.

This game makes being bad feel so good that I'm starting to question my own moral compass, lol.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
So how is the C&C? Previews seemed to talk highly about how difficulty they made it to avoid mundane or systemic evil.

I'm glad that the combat seems tough enough that even Nerd_Commando is having to heavily micro through fights and still takes some losses. Hopefully it stays that way throughout the game, or at least more so than Pillars.

Given everything that's been going on, I honestly forgot it was coming out. Last night I went home ready to get to bed early and finally get a good night's sleep for the first time since Extra Life last Saturday, and then my friend texted to remind me this was out.

I stayed up until 2am playing it and it was so, so worth it. Loving it so far and it feels like I've barely even scratched the surface of what's here.
