Ubisoft stock drops over 9% after Assassin's Creed Unity launch

The only AC game that has a MC score in the 90's at all is II and the PS3 version of Bro. None are higher than 91. The rest tend to be in the mid 80's. Anyone expecting the mid 90's for Unity has strange expectations.

That isn't to say that Unity ending up in the mid 70's isn't disappointing; it's definitely out of sync with the expectations for the series.

Honestly the most ridiculous thing about Ubi's stock dropping is people's reactions to it. A single day dip isn't going to cause them to change anything, really, and they're decent sales figures away from completely bouncing back from being "crushed" after an "abysmal" launch.

It won't make them change anything, will it? What nonsense is this.

I wonder what they're thinking over at Ubisoft right now:

A) We should've taken more time to get this game working properly.

B) We should've paid off more reviewers to keep that metacritic score up.

C) We should've threatened more review sites with pulled ads, no review copies and no swag.

D) Let's release THREE Assassin's Creed games next year!

Yes, but a website like Yahoo picking up on it might be a good sign, it might get word out that Ubisoft have been on a slide into EA-esque release of half-finished games and repulsive in-your-face microtransactions, and be the start of a trend.

At least, I hope so.

Sure, but that's still critically panned.

Unity wasn't as well received as it's predecessors but it's just shy of 80 so panned is not the right word to use it. Reviewers still sing it some praise.

It's nothing new that Metacritic scores are inflationated when it comes to video-games, this is just a reflex of how things are.
Yeah, I think I misinterpreted your post a little. I agree with you.

No, they'll put more studios to work with more space on the franchise but keep the schedule intact to keep the annual games coming.

Once it gets the annual treatment there's no going back.

So it's going to be like Activision and Call of Duty? Different studios working on the same franchise, switching between them every year?

The question is: Does Ubisoft have enough studios to dedicate the AC franchise? Are they big enough?

I'm worried...

Forgive me if I'm missing something, but these fluctuations are less than a percent while Ubi dropped by 9% in roughly the same timespan. Your examples can easily be explained as normal fluctuations, but I don't believe Ubi's case can be. Not when it's seeing 18 times the drop.

Look at the chart not the number. The number represent the value of the stock at the time of the screencap, not at the time of the event.

This game has all the markings of a 2014 Enter The Matrix. If EA could take a year off with Madden or LIVE, and Take Two can delay GTA by a year or more, surely Ubi could have gone one Christmas without an Assassin's Creed to simply make sure the game worked and they weren't poisoning the well for the rest of the series.

hope many people did what I did...picked it up and are sitting here holding an unopened package to see if anything is done in a week...if not return the POS....but I HIGHLY DOUBT anything will be fixed technical wise for this game, will probably just return it today to pre-order GTA or Dragon Age

I hope Ubi just gets the message that they need to ensure that their teams have more time to optimize their work rather than rush to meet the financial date goal. I don't want them to tank a studio and thousands of employees cause of their greed and subsequent panic.

Yet you will get the game today?

Let others "work" for you, i see.

People, the only way to stop this is to STOP buying their games.

The funny thing is they could have still had an AC this year. Rogue has been getting decent reviews and would have ran just fine at locked 30fps on both consoles since it's so similar in engine to AC4.

We'll see if it persists.

We'll note this stocks has yet returned to the highs, so it can actually demonstrate that Acti was punished for missteps.

Yea, although I do agree with your point about dropping significantly less, much less than Ubi.

You're completely right. Thanks for bringing it up. As Amir0x said, We should wait and see.

Game looks like a fucking mess. An unacceptable outcome when you consider the game's budget, how many people were working on this game, and the price tag. I really hope the sales numbers get absolutely wrecked so that Ubisoft will think twice before selling people a surprise piece of shit in a box for $60.

They should embrace all the crazy graphical glitches and say, "Surprise! It was all intentional!" like the Animus was sentient, and rename it "Beat Takeshi Presents: Assassin's Creed Unity". Starring Takeshi Kitano as "The Face":

You know, I'm glad this happened. It needed to happen. I like Assassin's Creed, I think it's a really cool franchise and I hate seeing this shit happen to it and other awesome franchises. If this gives them a wake-up call and sends a firm message to Ubisoft and other publishers maybe we can look forward to a brighter future. This kind of thing has gone on for far too long. If you can't make a polished game without needing to nickel and dime consumers to cover the budget, back off and engage in more reasonable endeavors.

Good. This means there's a higher chance they'll fix it. Or maybe not, the damage is done, word of mouth is probably bad.

They can't do Christmas without Assassin's Creed. And it's not like they had another one lying around that they can release on the old consol...... wait a minute....

Meh, I am enjoying the game, Paris is beautiful. I haven't encountered one glitch since returning the PS4 version for the Xbox One version.

I also got it for $44 with tax and all here in Canada because of E3 deals, so I can't complain about the price.

Rogue seems brilliant in comparison to Unity right now.

They should have made Rogue cross gen for this holiday season and have Unity for fall 2015.

Or March 2015.

I remember Herman Cain, a conservative presidential candidate for the US presidency last year, had a ridiculous 9/9/9 tax rate law he was pushing.

I just know he's behind this. Somehow.

LOL. Perfect.

AC definitely peaked as a franchise, with BF. Watch Doges will probably pick up the slack for them.

It seems like Watch Dogs has much less to go on as far as sequels. There's no historical value and no various nations with their own architecture. It's going to be U.S. city number 2 doing the exact same things. At least AC games have a decent setting going for them.

He stated it was barely playable. Not only is that patently false, but he's not even played it. How does that make sense?

When did I say that the hate was unwarranted? I'm talking about that users specific post, but go ahead and act like I generalized everyone if that makes your argument stronger.

20fps with lock ups and freezes is barely functional to me. I don't know about you, but I come to Gaf to hear what other people think about games. In this case, it was the vast majority that thought it was a mess. Why should I spend $60 on a game I know it would return and I wouldn't be able to play? You have to learn that people have a right to have an opinion different than yours, and generally will have different bars of tolerance than you do to many things. If you've fallen off a map and was ok with it good for you. But I can't stand that shit. Not for $60.

They wouldn't even have had to skip out on an AC this year. They could have just made Rogue cross gen and given ACU another year.

good.

i really don't like ubisoft. can't think of a game i enjoyed from them off the top of my head. just checked their list of games and nope not a single game on there i enjoyed.

the games they make could be brilliant but they go about it all wrong.

I'm pretty sick and tired of the AC Unity bandwagon... yes we get it, game is a mess, etc, etc, just don't fucking buy it.

THAT SAID, this is kind of entertaining to see. Happy that the games business is , to some degree, a meritocracy.

A bit suprised that these things actually have an effect on the company. I thought everyone just bought the game despite them, just like here on Neogaf. :)

I think Blacklist was a very impressive package, did you play it?

Glad they're getting repercussions to releasing an unfinished game. Sometimes, you just have to let your flagship title slip a few months. They even had another AC game as backup... but no, had to get it out now.

There's no real reason they couldn't besides lack of creativity. You could easily move the setting to any major city. won't have as much umph as well known historical setting but there is room to explore. Far Cry already does this.

I wouldn't quite go as far as to compare this to BF4 launch because a lot of players couldn't even play that game, however sure I would certainly think the drop has a lot to do with AC: Unity's launch.

Personally I've experienced frame rate drops and egregious loading times on the Xbox One version, but I've still been able to play the game otherwise and when it works it looks beautiful.

Ubisoft had it coming. The AC franchise has been stagnant if not regressing, all the while butchering history along the way.
