UFC 145 |OT| A Special Night with Jon Jones

Jones needs to spend more time wearing the belt in public places and choosing walkout songs to troll Rashad with and less time complaining about Rashad pimping in the VIP suite whilst he was stuck queuing at the bar buying drinks for everyone from Jackson's who got carded at the door because their idea of dressing smart is a button down Affliction shirt. When you've got the skills to back up almost anything you want to say you shouldn't be actively telling people how beta you are and how desperate you are to be loved.

Too bad that last sentence describes Rashad to a T more than anything else.

It is too bad because in an ideal world it wouldn't describe either of them. Don't mistake what I said as me rooting for Shad. I just feel that if a fighter is going to use their personality to hype a fight it needs to be consistent, otherwise people don't know what to think. GSP is humble and boring (and "dark"), Chael says whatever he wants, JDS is the nice guy who flips a switch in his head when he throws down the gauntlet, Lyoto is the elusive samurai and Anderson is apparently insane.

In this instance, we have some bizarrely personal trash talk that sounds more like the fallout from a divorce than pre-fight hype. People call Jones cocky and fake, but if he embraces being cocky it becomes entertaining and less people will call him fake for it. He doesn't need to become a full blown heel when he's the devout company man, but if he focuses more on showing people he's having fun being at the top as opposed to harping on about his destiny and how beloved he is I think he'll have a better chance at converting the haters. It's not like he's a boring fighter, so this seam of dislike extending beyond just fans of people he's beaten speaks volumes.

Just as bad, Rashad has gone from doing Mike Tyson impersonations, dancing in the cage and flashing dough in the club to some lost and bitter soul who needs to be placed on suicide watch if he loses this fight. Have you heard all this Kafkaesque stuff about changing Jones' life that he's been preaching to a camera in his giant house that he shares with his disabled dog? What kind of message are we meant to take from that? That there should be an ethics committee hearing before this man is cleared to fight?

It would have been better if this fight happened when it was supposed to. 9 months down the track it doesn't have the lustre of a fresh rivalry. If it's manufactured then it's just plain strange and if it's real it very difficult to empathise with either side.

I believe that the reason this feud sounds like a divorce is because these two were closer than they're letting on. I also believe that Rashad really feels hurt about Jackson pushing him to the side when he knew Shad was going through hard times.

does not compute.

Preview of Jones Shad.

Sorry for not Denzel.

So whats the general conensus on Jones/Rashad? Is anyone else thinking about throwing cash at Rashad? He seems hungry and odds were great last I checked.

Put it this way, the odds don't matter if the guy doesn't win. As far as underdogs go, I like Makdessi over Njokuani.

What about the GRAVEDIGGER?

I mean look at his wiki, "In his spare time, Griggs enjoys hiking into the mountains and hunting coyotes."

Jones has to lose some time.. What better place than ATL, what better time than now.

Um, no. What gives you any indication that he stands to lose this Saturday night?

It's possible that he might one day lose, but "what better time than now" doesn't apply here. He's unstoppable at the moment and only getting better.

If he's still undefeated in a few years, the "what better time" argument might apply.

Everyone picked Bonnar in a tune up fight. Oh my, how times have changed.

Thanks, browsing though all the predictions that a future champion was going to be TKO'd or sub'd by Bonner is laugh-out-loud material in hindsight.

Bishman was the first one after two-hundred fifty-ish posts to even consider Jon Jones coming out on top. Unless we include this prediction:

I've tossed around this idea, but never actually tracked how the results turn out... so without further delay, here are picks made entirely based on who Dana was looking at when the official weigh in pictures were snapped:

Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones
Good job, Dana.

As far as UFC 145 is concerned, I may stumble into a pub halfway through the PPV to witness the carnage firsthand. It was going to be hard to top UFC 144, and like yacobod I'm not feeling this one aside from the main event.

Not so sure why guys are giving Rashad no chance. He looked real good in his last fight and his mentality right now seems to be at a level of professionalism I've never seen in his career. The loss to Machida was bad but at the time Machida was unstoppable...you know how that can be in this sport sometimes.

The good thing is that Shad doesn't seem like his chin got weak over that loss and he's still a gamer. One thing I've seen out of Jones is that he's gone a bit soft over the last few months. Appearing on TV for the Fox show, the commercials, and he got rocked a little bit by Machida which kind of makes me feel blood is in the water.

I'm actually really liking Rashad here.

You thought he looked good? What fight were you watching?

I'm not saying it will be a complete blowout.

I just don't think he's going to take the belt away from Jones.

Fine. I'll be the lone operator of the delusional rashad express.

Im with ya bro. Im holding out hope for Suga. He's much more likable since his loss to Machida. Hopefully he can humble Jones just how Machida humbled him. Evans has been class these days. Like Machida hes also a solid bet. Dropping a bill on him.

Also Hendo/Evans is a better fight than Hendo/Jones. If the planets align than hopefully we can see Hendo beat Evans for the title than retire as the GOAT. My hopeful outcome for this is that Hendo will H-Bomb his way to finally winning a UFC belt. WAR HENDO!!!

Hendo/Evans would be horrible. No one wants to see basically Hendo/Shields 2.

Look everyone is beatable. Jones has holes in his game like everyone else but Shad isn't going to be the one to take advantage of it. Shad's only chance is to wrestler Jones and put him on his back. Won't happen though. Jones knows his weaknesses and he knows Shad knows them. Too me that makes him more of a threat than ever.

Rashad's gonna have a big problem in that fight. Jones not only has that reach, but he knows how to use it superbly well to stay out of danger while picking his opponents apart. His distance game is good enough that it also has the bonus of making him difficult to get to the ground, and in the clinch he tends to simply overpower his opponents.

In the Bader fight, Bader tried to shoot for a double legger in the first round, and Jones not only stuffed it easily but just used it to end up on top for the rest of the round. Rashad's the best wrestler he's faced yet but the only way Shad wins the fight via takedowns is if he consistently takes Jones down throughout the 5 rounds and basically lays-n-prays it up, cause he ain't gonna do any damage to Jones on the ground.

A lot of people have been saying that Rashad's got the ol' puncher's chance but even that will be tough, since he has to actually hit Jones with a square shot to make that work, and Jones' chin hasn't really been tested yet (mostly since people can barely get a decent hit on him). There's a silly vid out there with Rashad calling the Jones-Rampage fight and basically saying "you gotta get inside and hit him!" like it's actually that simple and easy, heh. Rashad has good movement and is pretty light on his feet, but Jones just controls the distance game too well.

You mean Jones right? Kinda confused me, you said Evans won't do it twice, but then said 'he' is more of a thread than ever, so I assume you mean Jones.

That's probably true. You won't see the Gawd and Condit bickering like this because they really weren't friends at all.

Drama filled presser starting soon.
