Uh oh, PSP preorders already exceeding $400 on eBay

Indeed, since it looked like several of you were "trolling" before I ever registered here. More than enough next times to go around.....

I point out truths. You don't even know how many companies I'm angry at. I'm angry at Sony, Nintendo, SEGA... Microsoft.

I'm just angry at everyone at this point.

The blood is upon my dagger.

An inferior version of Ridge Racer when compared to its console iterations apparently isn't enough to get my brain to cough up the cash.
Perhaps if you reduce your plural to Ridge Racer V only, and even then, I think RR on PSP will end up looking better than RRV (because of RRV's ultra jaggiez), have more tracks, and probably play about the same.

But anyways, I'm not importing it either but for completely different reasons.

gamergirly: "Hey, what are you guys doing? Jumping off a bridge? Me too! Me too!"

Hike the prices biatches - my chances to get my two PSPs increase a lot.

Not sure if I really figure out the genius of the Sony business model: produce something expensive and desirable, then sell it with considerable loss at small quantities so that random grey import vendors and ebay entrepreneurs can be arbitrageurs?

Kinda sad, but my chances of getting mine increase as well because I'm not going anywhere

It's a good way to create an excitement that will last into the money making years. It worked for PS2 (albeit inadvertently as I don't think Sony were actively trying to mitigate their beginning-of-cycle losses as they are now).

I feel like I was the only one bringing up the price hike in previous PSP threads. ^_^

Does this actually surprise anyone? With 200,000 units at launch, I'd expect $400 to be the least people pay for them. I'm betting importers will sell the systems for $450-$500 in December.

Remember:

-Dreamcast Japanese launch prices, November 1998: $1,000+
-Playstation 2 Japanese launch prices, March/April 2000: $600-$1,000

Keep in mind these were prices IMPORTERS were charging, not the actual price of course!

Prices did fall quickly though. I got a Japanese PS2 for about $500 at the end of April 2000 and bought an import DC in December 1998 for around $500 as well. I won't be paying those type of prices for the PSP, however. :)

Looking at more recent systems, the Japanese PStwo STILL goes for around $265 at some importers!

That situation looks increasingly more likely. Since there are only going to be 500k for the entire month of December, I'm going to take the risk and allow myself to be gouged a bit in the hopes that I can flip it in late February for what I paid for it.

*Glances at prices tosses around, realizes he is about to get fucked, goes to store to by K-Y to ease pain*

Ok, I'm reloaded. I'm ready for whatever they throw at me

I've pretty much set a limit for mysellf at $300-$320 MAX, no more.

the analog nub is the sort of functional, understated innovation that nintendo just isn't interested in anymore. they prefer loud novelties.

By "understated", do you mean half-ass, or perhaps inadequate? That's right, it's today's generation in a handheld. (provided you love prerendered backgrounds and hate modern first person shooters)

What?

a mid-November preorder with Lik-Sang

You are hopeless ;) my preorder is from March. Your doubts and lack of faith are your sins and you won´t see the face of the holy PSP (includes malefic laugh here)

Nah, seriously, hope you are able to get yours.

I´m doubting between Ridge Racer and Lumines...

Shit. After that news article where they state that they have 5k orders but can't even source 500, I knew the writing was already on the wall :(

As far as the games are concerned, I'd get both somehow. I always make the mistake of only buying one game with a console, then end up rushing out and buying like three more within the next couple of days.

People paying attention to the Ebay thing should pay close attention Sunday morning in Japan. Those who bid on the PSP for the auction will get their system on that day, and I'm sure a few will put them up for auction.

Is it me, or does Speevy makes less and less sense with every new post?

By now, most retailers have either started and finished their PSP pre-order programs (true of chains like Sofmap, Tsutaya and Yamagiwa Soft), or have announced that they won't be taking pre-orders at all and people will have to queue up on launch day (true of chains like Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera). By searching through Tokyo, we managed to come upon one exception: retailer Sakuraya, a rival to Bic and Yodobashi, will be taking pre-orders starting 12/4.

At the time of this writing, it's nearly 2:00AM on 12/4. IGN swung by the Shibuya Sakuraya shop at about 1:00AM and found the scene pictured above. That's right, it's a line: a line of people willing to wait all night in order to pre-order a system

What's interesting is that Sakuraya wasn't very public about the pre-order date. There were no signs at the stores, and the only way we found out about it was by asking the clerk when they'd start taking pre-orders for the system. There was a similar scene at Sofmap, which took pre-orders on 12/1 and, despite no loud announcement, managed to draw long-enough lines so that it had sold out of its pre-order stock before it had even opened its doors for business.

Wow. That is impressive. BUt then if you gauge the number of consoles for sale vs DS. You'd want to queue up early to buy a PSP. Bodes really well for PSP sales - I wonder what will the handheld market be like in 1 year. Them Japanese gameboys sure like Sony.

If they weren't hyped into thinking that the PSP will be extremely difficult to get on launch day (which is actually true!), there probably wouldn't be any lines for preorders. +1 for SONY. I guess a few of them are also gonna sell PSPs for 500$ to stupid gaijins on eBay :)
Could be that they just like the product.
That sounds like a fair bet.
