UK: Investigatory Powers Bill gets royal assent

Not open for further replies.
The home secretary, Amber Rudd, hailed the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 as “world-leading legislation” that provided “unprecedented transparency [of private citizens] and substantial privacy protection [debilitation]”.

I added the [REDACTED] bits there.

No doubt that also covers their homes and spouses.

"A Member of Parliament (MP) is the representative of the voters to a parliament"

Clearly, the voters demanded this legislation, and despite the MPs resistance it was passed to please the masses. This must be why they amended it. Makes sense. ":D"

I'm sick of the corporate dictatorship that the western world has become. Not that the world and human behaviour hasn't always been that way. Only now replacing the sword and shield with a cheque-book and pen. Capitalism and the abuse of power that comes with it sucks!

That saddest part is regular people have long been conditioned to be largely accepting of it. As if it's the right and only way. To the point where intrusive 'laws' like these have become easy to establish. Slavery by consent.

The Mrs and I are fortunate enough to be on track to retire at 50 and then we are leaving the bullshit behind. We are off to enjoy ourselves and hopefully help some less fortunate people along the way. The inappropriately named 'United Kingdom' shall not be missed.

Honestly I kinda feel like the bigger hope would be for the EU to use it in negotiations with the UK over Brexit. As in, they need to compromise the spying capabilities in some fashion if they're to get any kind of deal.
This would be funny - read: depressing - to see, because we'd get MPs, the press and probably most depressingly of all, the public, outraged by the fact that the EU was trying to prevent the state from enacting these powers, when actually the EU would be trying to help UK citizens.

We have the thickest citizens.

Yep, need to get a VPN service and I need to understand which one to go for :)
NordVPN or Private Internet Access.

Nord are currently having a sale on.

I'm considering writing a protest script for UK internet users that runs in the background and sends tiny header only requests to random websites every second 24/7.

Good fucking luck to the snoopers requesting and then trying to make sense of those logs.

I like this. Nice.

TBH the government has done a fantastic job getting the people to give little to no shit about politics nor the bills that are passed. At the same time, making sure they only get riled up about immigration or taxes.

Basically the rightwing dream that is about to be the next four years in the US.

This would be amazing.

What a shitty year.

Fuck this country, seriously.

I'd absolutely love this.

Keep us posted dude!

Social correctness has traditionally had nothing whatever to do with reason, logic or physics. In fact, in England it is generally considered socially incorrect to know stuff or think about things. It’s worth bearing this in mind when visiting.
-Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

... but that's none of my business

AFAIK you can avoid this with a VPN, but you shouldn't have to pay extra for privacy. It's like a tax for wearing clothes in public. Some people might not care at all, but it's nice to have standards.

This idea is beyond hilarious, do it!

Man, fuck this Cuntry, seriously.

No that is not a typo BTW.

I really fucking hate this country, what a joke. I think I might look to move to North Korea, I think I have more freedom and rights if I live there.

Is this compatible with the freedom of information act? can I request access to my own history if I forgot that amazing porn site I found a few weeks back?

Hell, what about the data protection act? Can we gum up the system by asking our ISPs for all our usage data?

Fuck this country, I've been mulling it over for a good while now but I think it might be time to save up and move.

This is just the base law too, who knows what amendments they'll make after the first terror suspect gets away and they need more powers.

When does this go into effect? Or is it already law? Is it retroactive?

*EDIT* Ah, 31st of December, with some provisions coming later. Still, last question still stands.

Not sure if posted yet but they have responded to the petition, it's quite long so not read it all yet. Still no date for the debate (if it happens)

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/173199

The first bloody paragraph of that response is bunk. How long are governments going to lean on 9/11 as an excuse to do anything they please? I swear, when I die of old age they'll still be playing the "In a time of heightened security" card. Somehow we got through the entire cold war and the troubles without resorting to spying on everyone, how long is this going to go on

I really, really, hope that somebody hacks this bollocks (or whatever) and finds all kind of sordid shit on these fuckwit politicians and leak it all online.

Theresa May constantly watches 2 Girls 1 Cup.
Nigel Farage knocks one out to Polish immigrants having their way with Good Honest British Women.
David Cameron sticking his cock in the mouths of dead farm animals.

Tbh maybe we need a rise of hacker vigilante's to get rid of all this corrupt nonsense in the world. I know i would try to if i knew how and even if it would risk my life doing so.

You'd need to make it only create requests from SFW websites, just in case. Just constantly pummel stub pages on Wikipedia or tropes with 3 examples on TVTropes, the sheer amount of scrolling would put anyone off.

In terms of paying for a vpn, can they not link your private details to your browsing? I know they say they don't keep logs but how can you be sure?

Edit; oh interesting, seems like many vpn providers let you pay by gift card for privacy that's handy.

But, but if you have nothing to hide then why should you be worried . . . . ?

I imagine you are being ironic but just in case, you absolutely have loads to hide. You don't want increased healthcare bills because you trawl the net for unhealthy dessert recipes or you dont want to get rejected from a job for your political views or for how long you browse gaf a day lol.

Hell never mind people who don't exactly want their porn habits getting out.

Just the incredible doublethink fuckery of how this is somehow "protecting our privacy" just blows my mind.

Meanwhile, the Guardian is pushing notifications to my phone about sex offender football coaches but nothing about this.

The part about 'restoring powers' in the digital age is telling.

Sadly, the terrorists won. We've just given them what they've always wanted: a loss of our freedoms.

2016 is the year that the right-wing proved themselves to be the most anti right-wing group of people out there. They've emboldened and strengthened both terrorists and the EU (along with making it much, much harder to catch the former), divided nations, inadvertently caused future refugee crises with their total exclusion of climate change and to top it all of they've began to fuck over two major economies as well.

Almost makes you think that they're only in it for themselves and just use their rhetoric to gain votes.

They have the best version of Big Brother, too.

If by "Big Brother" you mean digital surveillance, then yes, we have it too and it's becoming more and more intrusive. This is not exclusive to the UK. We're not yet at this point, but we'll get there soon enough.

Theresa May really is a top tier cunt. They all are. Royal fucking assent. Fuck those inbred glove waving thundercunts as well. Time to exodus.

What a crazy time to be alive when both Idiocracy and V for Vendetta can be mistaken for documentaries.

The USA was is the middle of a civil war in V for Vendetta too wasn't it? Definitely set in the near future...

Had a look at the response to the petition.

Same old argument. Give up your freedom or the terrorists will get you!

Didn't explain why "In a time of heightened security" the DWP or Food Standards Agency need to see my browsing history.

To all the people saying they're going to leave the UK: see you tomorrow

Ouch.

I imagine it is just idle threat from most, but a lot of people I know have been preparing to bail out of the UK and work and live elsewhere. They have in demand skills. So may as well use that as a way out.

To those people semi serious do it. Me and my SO left the UK last November and moved to Vancouver. One of best decisions we've ever made.

I've met loads of brits over here in all sorts of jobs who just had enough of the UK and came over. In all seriousness if you're under 30 look into coming out here on a working holiday at least.

How can I effectively make a different in stopping this? Is there any way?

Funding a legal challenge. That said, I would not be at all surprised if at least one major ISP is planning on taking this to the High Court soon over this, since historically they have all resisted any increase in the length of time they have to hold browsing history of their customers.

Missus and I looked into Canada, but it seemed like a hell of a lot of stress. Doesn't help that we're not young... and countries only want older people with shitloads of cash. :(

Unfortunately it won't make a lick of difference. Someone should make a new petition "Make MPs subject to the IP Act"

I don't want to put a downer on this, but I had a look at the other petitions on the site and found one with over 4 million signatures.

The petition? "EU Referendum Rules triggering a 2nd EU Referendum"

Obviously made the world of difference.

Fuck this country. My son has to grow up with this garbage.

That's not a reason not to try. The governement would love for people to stop testing their every decision.

Well now, the more you know! Not even Canada is safe, goddammit.
