Im in the uk. And it's all over the news all-the-time.

I am in the uk too and work in news, not on output just technical side, but on the news room floor so I hear all the output editors getting hyped as soon as anything is on the wires.
Reporters talking about this etc.
After a while you can get caught up in the atmosphere and the buzz
I am a worrier too.
Did three 12 hour days in a row and this was all I heard in the background..

so? He is not the "kanzler" anymore…

It was pretty shady. One of his last actions as kanzler he got a gasprom deal for germany. And then he got the job. He is pretty coruppt if you ask me. He lost all credibility with that. He is basicly a russian lobbyist now.

We need another Reagan back in the white house. Last time I felt like this country really was the leader of the world, and we were a beloved nation.

Why do these former Soviet states always think western Europe is going to come to their rescue? If anything don't put all your faith in the west.

"Who cares that the EU and IMF fucked over the Balkans, Syria, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Greece? They're just lazy. No way that'll happen with us."

No way they go to war over an Eastern European country. Georgia and a few other countries come to mind. All of them hoped the west would come, but they never did.

Sanctions, what sanctions against Russia? Gerard Shroder is on the Gasprom payroll

We made sure The Braves stayed in the MLB. We loved Georgia.

As a non-American, trust me when I say electing a neoReagan would be the worst possible thing to do if you wanted to make America more popular abroad.

Reagan cut deals with terrorists, financed the global cocaine network, and financed Burst-into-Your-House-at-Night-and-Chop-You-to-Death Squads.

He also, you know, invaded countries because he didn't like who was in power.

Reagan was our Putin.

... he was one of your worst Presidents of modern times with disastrous economic and foreign policy, what on earth are you even pining for outside of nostalgia?

No, and I am glad W or Palin are not in power

Sorry hocuspocus, you are talking mumbo jumbo

I dunno if that phrase is deemed rascist, my bad if it is.

In this exact day in 1942...

So Aleksandr Dugin was at it again, in Russia's largest newspaper Pravda. Just another statement from the man who is partly responsible for creating this Eurasian ideology that is mainstream:

-"Right now Putin is one step away from being a true world leader, the personification of Russia being released from the hegemony of the United States. He is passing a historic test, this is the moment of truth for us Russians"

One day Russians will have to deal with a real war again and see just what their super power status is in the 21st century.

Reagan was our Putin.

Conversely, we elected Obama, who's a mix between Reagan and Nixon, so there's that.

In terms of general popular nostalgia, Reagan is one of the most well regarded US Presidents, even though the history books certainly paint a different light.

As if they had capability to do that. Because they don't. Not even close.

And what is stopping them.

Once they have the Crimea. The rest of the Ukraine will be next and so on and so forth. The west will talk about sanctions but they are too shit scared to talk of using the military as they know they will get a spanking.

In Pravda [truth] there is no news, and in Izvestia [news] there is no truth.

Chinese and Russia foreign ministers met and Russia made the claim they have Chinese support in Ukraine but I'm not seeing this echoed by the Chinese. Is there confirmation the Chinese are backing the Russians in Ukraine, or is it simply misinformation?

1) Occupy Crimea
2) ???
3) World domination

1 million Ukrainians? That's just for Ukraine too. If we want to use the broad definition (or not, it doesn't really matter) of former Soviet States then they simply lack the resources to take over them all by force. I don't get this illusion that there's only two armed forces in the world.

Besides Putin (as a person considering that his goal is probably to say at charge) just can't afford a full scale war with just about any nation in the world.

You are aware a number of former Soviet states are members of the EU and NATO.

Russia wants nothing to do with NATO.

There's about 45 million Ukrainians. 20% of them are Russian, either ethnic Russian or Russian nationals. I don't think it would take a lot of force to take the Ukraine once the Crimea is taken.

From what I understood, this was reported in the Chinese State media (Xinhua), so it appears to be true.

Even if they do manage to conquer Ukraine the conflict would exhaust a lot of their military resources for years. And that's not even approaching the problem of having to occupy the place. The US occupied Iraq for close to 10 years with over 100,000 soldiers and still didn't manage to control the country, despite the Iraqi insurgents being as busy fighting each other as they were fighting the US.

Ukraine has 15 million more inhabitants than Iraq and is almost 1,5 times the size. It took Russia close to 20 years to get Chechnya somewhat under control, and that control is tenable at best. And Chechnya is tiny in comparison.

Russia wants nothing to do with NATO.

Which may be one of the reasons why Putin wants to re-integrate.

I think neither me or you has the expertise to really comment on this but only one is talking completely from his ass here. You seriously think Russia could roll into the rest of Ukraine like they did to Crimea? What makes you think that?

Which may be one of the reasons why Putin wants to re-integrate.

What's the point in having NATO if they would just stand idly when Russia starts to "re-integrate" their member countries?

At least something a bit more heartening to read are all those reports about how fast Putin can lose support within Russia if the economical side effects of this Ukraine crisis start to fall through.
Considering just how fast this uneasiness is tanking their currency, I can't imagine that, even he, can keep this going on for long.

West should follow with financial sanctions to further worse this situation in Russia as soon as possible.

What are these "reports"?

I thought he wasn't too popular to begin with, doesn't he get booed at the majority of his public appearances already?

There's no need to start the "talking out their ass" line here. It's all supposition and discussion at this point, no?

I agree that neither of us knows anywhere near enough. I'm just learning as I go. But Putin is a very clever man who knows exactly what he's doing. I just happen to think that just getting Crimea is not the endpoint of what he's trying to achieve here. I think a lot of it depends on how much resistance he gets from the Ukraine and Western countries and how much support he gets from China. If he can keep going with relatively little collateral damage then I think he'll continue.
