Unaesthetically pleasing games?

Several, but thinking on my feet, I'd say I always found everything about the modern Fallout games by Bethesda unbearably ugly.

Played this on PS+ and it was super off-putting.

There's no accounting for taste I guess.

I don't think it's a terrible looking game. But for Nintendo, it's clearly a phoned-in effort.

Wtf, amazing looking game considering the resolution. This is coming from someone who didn't have a PS1 growing up. Even VII still looks a million times better than a bunch of bland looking RPGs like Suikoden, almost every Falcom game, most DQ games, etc

I think those retro styled indie games with less detail than 8bit look terrible, Nidhogg and such. No amount of modern graphical effects saves those

Gears of War, all the character design just screams "this is dudebro land". Super off-putting. The 3D models in the 3DS Fire Emblem games, God are those awful. Bethesda games in general look ugly as sin.

I love this game, but the environments aren't anything to write home about and old-man Nier looks like he was beat with an ugly stick (to his credit though, his father-saving-daughter tale is totally better than boy-brother Nier fighting for his sister).

While the art design and aesthetics for Nier is hit and miss, I like the very unconventional look of Papa Nier. His face might not be pleasing to look at, but it's recognizable and memorable.

And many more, of course ;)

We really should disqualify resolution problems. That's a technical issue a lot of PS1 and N64 would look fantastic if they had been made on superior hardware. It's not intentionally ugly.

Yeah, that image has become pretty notorious, but VIII is one of the best-looking PS1 games. IX is even better. Even compared to VII (which basically took the SNES games' approach for overworld models, but in 3D), it's practically night and day how much more advanced VIII's models are.

Disagree. I've found that 3D PSOne RPGs aged poorly. Maybe they looked great in the late 90s, but playing them now, I'll take the Grandia or Xenogears style of using sprites in a 3D environment. I haven't played VIII but IX does look a lot better than VII.

You just passed stupid and went beyond it.
Minecrafts looks is a masterclass for art direction.

Apparently Mojang don't agree as they're redoing every texture in the game.

But personally, I do enjoy the coherant, unashamed Minecraft look.

Zelda BotW's washed out foggy environment with low res blurry textures.

As much as I like the game, it's certainly not pleasing to look at.

Now I've read it all.

The mention of Braid also make this thread proof that taste is a very subjective thing.

Edit: Also love Minecraft.

I submit Fallout 3 to this thread. Looks so ugly.

They just did that color correcting.
Hardly a redo mainly rebalancing all the added content.
Making something that looks like it fits in minecraft is not easy at all.

If you are talking about the superduper gfx its just an texturepack with added light etc.
It's just another skin for minecraft not a remake.

Every single art asset needs to fit in the overall design of the game.
Blizzard are kings at this.

Wow is a great example.
So is diablo 3

STALKER games are pretty damn fugly. You can't really see that from screenshots or youtube, but they aren't easy on the eyes. Yet somehow that kinda suits them just fine.

Dissidia NT and Type-0 HD. While the Dissidia games and Type-0 represented impressive technical achievements on the PSP, the HD titles just make everything look like cheap plastic in a way that's just really visually unappealing.

No no, they hired a pixel artist to go over every single texture and redo them. They keep tweeting what they're working on. Crafting bench, birch wood, obsidian... everything is up for change. Jeb has said he wasn't happy with the current status of half Notch/half Jeb textures that were made as and when.

Warframe

I just started playing a few weeks ago, and I firmly believe that, as big as the game is already, it would be even more popular with even a hint of charm, character, atmosphere, sleek and interesting design.... idk something. The entire game looks like space fungus. How can the concept of "space ninjas" go so incredibly awry. It's all just a blob of biomech, but not in a grotesquely beautiful HR Giger way.
