Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection review thread

Hmm, seem a little lower than I was expecting. GTA V Current Gen and Last of Us Remastered are like two of the highest rated games ever, and yet this gets docked for being a remaster? not complaining just find it a little strange considering the praise these games have got in the past.

I haven't seen a review complain about this being a remaster yet, just that the games haven't aged that well. Maybe the narrative about this being "the big PS4 exclusive" of the fall could impact that though :P

No, but it would make sense to let a person who has either not played the games or played them and liked them review it. This remaster wouldn't have changed his mind.

In the latter case, you'd just get the opposite kind of review, a gushing, overly-appraising PR piece.

So games should only be reviewed by people who are already fans?

There's probably a discussion to be had about who should review remasters, specifically.

I guess it also depends on who you think this game is for. If it's for fans of the series, then, surely, you'd want a fan's perspective.

If it's for people who are new to the franchise, then it might be good to get an outsider's perspective.

Any dumb reviews mention that Drake's a serial killer?

Because you aren't a games critic if you don't say that at some point.

Videogamer.com did! Their reviewer isn't really a fan of Uncharted to begin with either.

"Outside perspective" doesn't mean "person who is known to not like franchise". It's "person who has little to no experience with franchise". They're not the same thing.

I was all over a TLOU remaster so I'm not sure why I'm not interested in this at all. Maybe because there's so much to play at the moment.

I think it's because of the disparity in quality on Uncharted 1.

But then again if they DIDN'T include it then they'd certainly take criticism for that, so you really can't win. I think it's just the nature of remastering a years-long series in one box. I wouldn't worry about the scores though as by all accounts it sounds technically more-than-competetent, which is really all most would hope for.

Steve has the fans covered though. :P

for those of you with an inclination to love Naughty Dog's trilogy no matter what, even if Drake himself had snuck into your house and choked your dad to death before nicking your mum's pearls and calling your dog 'pal', you'll be delighted with how his adventures have been rejigged and upgraded for PS4.

Seriously. No way I'm paying full for this.
OK, that's fine, but you sound so dismissive. This is one of the best remasters of any game to date. It looks AND plays better in every way. Uncharted 1 feels like a whole new game.

Wait till you play it. The changes they've made to UC1 result in a really good experience. Many of the rough edges and annoyances have been removed. It plays really well now and looks a lot better.

I dunno. These games have already been widely reviewed. It seems like a remaster collection is begging for more of a review about how it comes off as a remastered collection instead of simply rehashing the same gameplay reviews that these games have already gotten years ago.

But I guess that's the weird place remasters find themselves, being rereviewed as if the game has never been played and reviewed before.

Not only did both of those teamsters keep their multiplayer, it's the best version of it.

The things they did to gtav make it more of a port than remaster imo. Last of Us is lost on me too

PS3 and X360 reviews didnt count GTA Online, and they have a 97 Meta sooooo

You're wrong there
Good thing we're talking about the one and ps4 versions right?

lol

Remove the online mode from GTAV and watch the scores drop a tick.

EDIT: And the Remasters Meta are actually lower than the originals as well

You're kinda wrong there

7 out of 10....

Game reviews have completely gone to hell.

To address some of the criticisms:

"These games have aged badly."

I played the unremastered version of Uncharted 1 last year, and while the graphics weren't up to par with 2 and 3 and the shooting was weaker than 2 and 3, the game was still fantastic. A year later a remaster of it is bad? Worse, a remaster of 2 or 3?

3 of the best action games ever are lovingly remade and some reviewers yawn? ....20 year old games get HD ports and people lay eggs.

"The shooting is terrible" I hear this about the Uncharted games, and you know who I hear it from? People who are terrible at TPS games. Period. When probed it always comes down to "bullet sponges" and being "unfair." I never say this (aloud), but: get good. Uncharted shooting is fantastic.

I know, I know, reviews are subjective but man, I'm just so sick of the hipster review culture. Just wait until the first clickbait 2/10 drops...I may actually scream out loud.

Each of those titles plays like a modern game and, in my opinion, represent the pinnacle of their respective studio's efforts, at least where gameplay mechanics are concerned. Uncharted was never the tightest experience around and the intervening time since the last title hasn't done the series any favors.

A 7 from Videogamer lol, of course.

Looking good. I've had it preordered for a while anyway but good to see all 3 hold up. The demo was a good indication of the quality.

edit: "Note: if you're just here for an appraisal of the remaster, feel free to make yourself feel better and add two points to the score." Good to know. So Videogamer gave it a 9/10. Ignore the babbling crap the rest of the article spews.

In the latter case, you'd just get the opposite kind of review, a gushing, overly-appraising PR piece.

Ok, then who the heck reviews Mario games? Do you get the guy who likes platformers or the guy who hates them? I mean, it is common sense that you get the guy familiar with the genre, yes? Otherwise your review doesn't tell potential customers anything except "I don't like this type of game. Fans of the genre might, but we didn't get one of those to review it. Guess if this game is for you."

Steve Burns isn't a great Uncharted fan so that's a weird choice of reviewer, believe he only rates Uncharted 2 8/10 and hates the third. 7/10 expected.

Why should only fans review games?

I'd rate those games the same as him, yet I'd be in the market to buy this game (and be looking forwards to UC4) if I had a PS4.

Anyway, this genre isn't something that only a very particular type of person can enjoy. Uncharted appeals in even a mild way to as broad an audience as you can get.

About what I expected, even though I'd imagine my personal score will be higher than the average (UC2 is in my top 5 of all time, and I still greatly enjoyed the other two). Bluepoint really do deserve massive credit for their work on this collection, multiplayer or not.

Is it just me who thinks that Videogamer review reads a lot lower than a 7/10? Other than a few graphical effects and the craftsmanship of the port, he seems to nothing positive to say about any aspect of the game at all!

That doesn't excuse Drake's Fortune being a mechanically weaker experience in comparison to Uncharted 2 and 3. Consider that the only thing to compare Drake's Fortune to at the time of it's release as a TPS was Gears of War, and as a whole GoW1 kind of made DF's controls look incredibly bad. It's a shame that some of the controls in DF weren't refined a bit, but it's nothing to get upset about.

You also have to consider that DF wasn't exactly about 'shooting' and that the game kept a lot of the design principle seen in the Jak series in it. There's a bigger emphasis of exploration/adventureing in DF than there is in any of the other titles (What I mean is, DF feels much less 'linear' than 2 and 3.)

You can be terrible at third person shooters and still criticize the gunplay of a shooter. Do you see anyone praising Mass Effect's gunplay? Or Spec Ops for that matter? Bullet Sponging is a huge issue with the AI in 3 and makes the experience a slog, and the lack of proper feeling kick to gun fire in the entire series (even in 2 :c) makes the gunplay kind of a drab. Yeah it improved in sequels but overall as a TPS, Uncharted is very...workhorse.

Which again, is not a bad thing.

I know, I know, reviews are subjective but man, I'm just so sick of the hipster review culture. Just wait until the first clickbait 2/10 drops...I may actually scream out loud.

Just...don't read the articles??? lol

Don't need reviews. One of my favorite franchise amid all time, at 1080p and a solid 60fps with numerous other graphical and gameplay enhancements.

Take my money.

Also, even the photo mode in the demo has me toying around endlessly.

Only complaint is the lack of cutscene models in gameplay like TLoU:R. At least seemingly from the demo.
