underappreciated horror movies

Caught this on Netflix one night and I actually liked it. It was like Open Water, but not boring.

lots of great ones mentioned in here
Black Water is the only great horror movie i know that hasn't been mentioned, I think
It's a very minimalistic film, most of it is 3 people hiding on a tree from a crocodile that lurks below.
But the realism of it all is very unsettling. I love plausible horror films.

slightly off-topic: is there a site for movies similar to the backloggery?
i want to have a comprehensive list of movies i want to watch sometime in the future

? You don't say.
And this isn't even the dumbest thing about the movie!

Razor sharp wire inches thick say wha?

Someone recommended the film to me and needless to say, I wasn't too impressed.

Does Ils (Them) count as one of those types of films? It is largely set on the grounds of an estate in the woods, and they don't venture out of it until near the end. I was really impressed by that one.

I feel like there's a difference between being trapped by an intruder versus being trapped by dangerous environs...but yeah it probably is me being anal about subgenres that barely exist anyway. (Maybe it's 'cause horror movies are so cliched and conventions are repeated over so many times that one can microorganize them as such...)
True enough, but sub-genres are at least important for those not as versed in a particular genre. If someone asks me to recommend a horror film to them, I always ask them what they're fond of. Not that I'm trying to stifle the broadening of their horizons, but I doubt very much a normal film watcher would have the same zeal for Santa Sangre or Videodrome like I do.

Two underappreciated genre entries which are probably behind only the original Halloween for my favorites in the genre:

Sure, its sort of a road movie/black comedy/exploitation/70's homage/horror hybrid, but its goddamn great.

B000FAOC2M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Quite possibly the best horror remake ever. Its better than the original by a fair margin.

Is that the one that was supposedly one continuous take? If so, I'm intrigued.

I just watched Without Warning for the first time in a loooooooong time.

It's hella out of date now, but I still find it quite chilling. Doesn't help that it's almost 4am and I'm all alone here. I remember being freaked out by the ending when I first watched it in the late 90s.

If you've not seen it, it's a "mockumentary" style news broadcast regarding the aftermath of an asteroid hitting the Earth.

Apartment 1303. Its on netflix with subs, and is also being remade in English. Never heard of it, just played it while browsing horror section on netflix and holy shit, this is Ju-On tire. If you like Japanese horror do not miss this.

No, that's something else that I can't think of right now. It's the film that was sorta remade into The Strangers in the US.

Devil's Rejects is even better in comparison to the film it followed up, House of 1000 Corpses.
I disagree with The Hills Have Eyes though. Didn't like it or the original. The remake looked good, but was otherwise forgettable.

Ils and Session 9 both amazing films, though for completely different reasons ("Gordon, I need you to wake up!"). To the guy who asked about Hardware: Unless you consider The Terminator horror, it's not. That being said, it's a fun little flick to watch.

I'd personally recommend 'Monsters' and 'Ginger Snaps', along with 'Peeping Tom' to anyone looking for underrated, but quality horror films.

it's very boring, the monsters play a minor part in the film, it's mostly travel arrangements, moaning about paying bribes and a really lame romance between two unlikeable characters

It's ok as long as you're not expecting anything like Cloverfield or something. The titular "monsters" have a very small part in the movie.

Watched this last night, it was surprisingly really tense and nail biting. That end bit was chilling and yeah not to spoil it all, but it was a good take on the subject matter.

The TCM remake gave me nightmares alright...

When I first saw the TCM remake I hated it. But I have to say, after a while it grew on me and I finally started looking at it as a generally well made film. The cinematography is really good, none of the actors do a bad job, the characters are shockingly decent, and some of the deaths on the uncut version are great.

It wasn't exactly a necessary film to make, but as far as remakes go, it's pretty top-notch. Just saying, give it another chance. There's a lot of good qualities about it. It doesn't have that gritty atmosphere of the original, but the remake had the same DP (Daniel Pearl) resulting in at least some similar color tones and that "peak of summer heat" atmosphere.

Somebody almost talked me into watching the remake of Last House on the Left. What say you guys, worth it? Y/N?
I actually enjoyed it more than the original (saw the original AFTER the remake). Remake is a solid movie, and doesn't haev the camp of the original (unless of course you like that). One of the rare modern remakes that I actually enjoyed.

I see session 9 was in here a bunch already. That and Frailty go down as my hidden gems. Session 9 being the better of the two.

I saw this and it was awesome.

House of 1000 Corpses is also severely underrated. Almost everyone I know hates the movie. To me its TCM on an acid trip.

Three... Extremes
Dumplings - An aging actress wishing to reclaim her youth goes to a woman who makes dumplings that supposedly have regenerative properties; however, they contain a gruesome secret ingredient.

Cut - A successful film director and his wife are kidnapped by an extra, who forces the director to play his sadistic games. If he fails, his wife's fingers will be chopped off one by one every five minutes.

Box - A soft spoken young woman has a bizarre recurring nightmare about being buried in a box in the snow. Searching for her long lost sister, she realizes her dreams and reality may possibly be connected.

There was nothing on TV tonight except "Frozen."

How anyone could consider that a horror movie I have no idea.

The irony is they are hubby and wife irl.

Correct though, a pretty film with good music but almost no real meat to it other than "people are bad and space elephants are misunderstood".

Larry Fessenden's Habit, one of my favorite films and easily the best vampire movie next to Romero's Martin (another underappreciated film) and Let the Right One In. More of an existential drama than horror, but it still fits within the genre and it's a bloody masterpiece. Sadly, not a lot of people have heard of it.

Based on a short story, really awesome film.

A Czech film that's really weird and bizarre lol, but entertaining. Watch it.[/QUOTE]

I wasn't big on Midnight Meat Train, was ok but nothing special but I think I had high hopes as I loved the story on which it was based.

Get where you're coming from, since it was disappointing to those who have read the 1984 short story, but nonetheless it's still a good horror B-movie and it deserves more popularity.

Anyway, if you guys like horror/comedies, check out Re-Animator. Funny ass shit.

Haven't seen that film for years, loved that film ever since my Grandad showed it to me in the eighties.

Its a shame all the movies that scared me as a kid just make me laugh now :(

So much awesome cheese.

Session 9 is deeply flawed, and it's something that could have been fixed with literally 5 minutes of backstory for the characters. Otherwise a great film. (Well, I am not a fan of the soundtrack, but...)

I really need to see that. Lance Henriksen is one of the most underrated actors of all time, IMO.

I watched it on Blu-ray a couple of months back, first time I had seen it in years. I had no idea Vasquez from Aliens was in it and quite sexy too.

Watched "Don't Wake The Dead" some time ago and laughed my ass off with a buddy. Great shit horror movie to watch with friends. Hilarious concept, shitty acting and bad special effects. Some of the deaths are so fucking ridiculous and the actresses can barely speak english. So bad it's actually good.

If you like a good haunted house story, this is one of the best:

If you liked that, you'll like this:

and I'll second The Innocents mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Both are above-average haunted house tales, well worth seeking out...

I really enjoyed Monsters - bought a copy on DVD release for my collection too... It's kind of like someone dropped The African Queen, Jurassic Park and Final Fantasy The Spirits Within into a blender...

I'd also like to recommend the Master of Horror episodes Family and The Screwflly Solution (lots of others worth seeing from that series as well)...

Lastly, I've got a soft spot for this :

Yes! Re-Animator is one of my faves. The sequels don't really get a lot of respect, but I think they're great too. The 2nd one has some amazing practical effects and the 3rd's ending is batshit insane - a must see.
