Underrated Games That Had Their Sequels Canceled

One of the greatest fps franchises of all time, rip

Twisted Metal Black.

It's underrated in the sense that you never really hear people talk about it when the PS2 comes up.

This was canceled for a pretty terrible reason. A lot of the designers died in a plane crash during development, and the game wasnt looking too great to begin with. You can play a few of the levels though in the PS2 version of Twisted Metal Head On.

Zombiu, great atmospheric survival horror, where dying matters and some interesting game mechanics. A sequel could have been awesome.

Does Zombi U count here?

I know Ubi have since said there will never be a sequel as the first game didn't turn a profit, but I'm not sure if it was ever "cancelled". It's a shame as it's an awesome game, and there was a lot of scope for a follow up.

^^ dammit

Blur was a great skill-based take on Mario Kart, though unfortunately it didn't sell very well and Bizarre Creations had to close down. I believe a sequel was confirmed in development (with some leaked screenshots), but was cancelled.

Prince of Persia 08

We'll never know.

Brave choice, but I agree.

In 1997 X-COM: Apocalypse was released to very mixed reaction as they took X-Com from pure turn based to a real time hybrid. It was a pretty cool game and had a lot of cool concepts, but the core fans never seems to embrace it. Unfortunately, we never go to see The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge, which was cancelled.

That was just a lie to give a suitably dark reason to cancelling it; maybe the dev team's way of trying to make an urban legend. After all, I'm pretty sure the news of the deaths of six of Sony's first-party developers wouldn't break in the bonus content of Twisted Metal: Head On.

Gonna have to say Xenosaga 3. The game was supposed to be a 6 game series but had to be cut short so they just jammed the rest of the content into 3. And regardless of what I think about 1 and 2, 3 has been a solid game so far and is a pretty underrated game compared to its other xeno companions.

Crimson Skies very much deserved a sequel, what an absolutely fantastic game! Also agree with the Getaway and Advent Rising love as I enjoyed the original games as well.

Was going to mention Legend of Legaia from PS1 but it got that sorta sequel on PS2 sadly.

This was an amazing ass game! I remember sequel was in the works and was going to be called Imperial Commando but was cancelled.

Brought this up when talking about licensed games in the [AA vs SoM Biggest Surprise?] thread. Short game that, iirc, sort of stumbled at the end with a cliffhanger to boot, but it was quite an amazing shooter.

^There are books, but that really doesn't replace what could have been a great, Empire-centric sequel.

Given that there was never a sequel announced, it doesn't have a place here. I agree that Ubisoft was too shortsighted given that the game wasn't the issue.

I sorta liked the first Getaway, but it always felt to me like an open-world game that didn't need an open world. I think the game could have been just as good and cinematic as a level based shooter.

Gladius. Oh, lawdy, Gladius.

I must've sunk over 100 hours into this. It was a wonderful strategy RPG with a somewhat mythological Greek/Roman theme in which you traveled the land recruiting, customizing and battling with your own team of gladiators, both realistic and fantasy-based. It had a really neat battle system with some real-time elements, and a lovely, very cinematic score, not to mention a great multiplayer mode in which you could battle your friend's gladiator team.

This was a LucasArts game, and at one point a sequel was in the works before quietly disappearing (long before the demise of LucasArts). What's worse is that it was on every console at the time, plus PC, so I imagine a lot of folks like me were pretty damned disappointed. I still yearn for a sequel, or even a remake.

It's really a shame. I would have loved to have seen what the devs could have done with a sequel, but Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, basically said there's no chance in hell for a sequel.

There was a listing for ZombiU 2 on some French retailer website a while ago and just out of curiosity I checked to see what the ZombiU team was up to.

A handful of them are now working on (surprise) Assassin's Creed games. The lead story writer went on to write for Valiant Hearts and after that left Ubisoft. Another handful of them left Ubisoft to help form an indie studio and are working on Wild for PS4.

So yea, pretty much zero chance for a sequel. Depressing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the sequel to this game was at the very least discussed by the developers. Considering how this game had a major cliffhanger, the only explanation I can think of is that a sequel was definitely planned at one point. The people behind this game have since disbanded, so a sequel is most likely never happening, which is a shame.

I remember trying to play this but the lighting was too bad. Why did all gamecube games have such bad lighting?

Whilst the game isn't the best I enjoyed the time I spent with it when it came out, it has aged horribly and I would've loved to see the way the sequel would have improved things.

My 2nd choice is Darksiders.

This.

Reminds of that other gem, Second Sight (although no sequel was announced).

You wait your whole life for a game that let's you play as a telekinetic and then two came along at once.

It was funny, but I remember the Second Sight guys saying, while he story in Second Sight was great, they agreed PSI Ops had better gameplay. The games cannibalized each other, so neither got a sequel.

That's a damn shame. They're right though, Second Sight's controls were unadulterated gash.

I thought PSI-Ops didn't get a sequel due to the copyright infringement?
