Unpopular Star Wars Opinions

While not a bad movie, I think The Empire Strikes back is where the franchise took the wrong turn.
I can really go into plenty of details here, though I expect anyone who remotely care is already seeing red (though as I enjoy talking movies, I’ll go into details if anyone gives a fuck), so I will talk in broad strokes –
This is when the franchise moved from a simple, silly and fun space romp to “serious” and “dark" saga, not to mention the first of many retcons, specifically, pretending the Star Wars was not a standalone adventure but the 4th episode of the 2nd of 3 trilogies.

I never really watched the entire series until I was 24, obviously being into nerd culture I would come across how much of a badass Boba Fett was, but he just gets killed off without ever doing anything cool. Never understood the hype.

I'd like to hear more, because I felt that Empire was actually one of the most light hearted movies.

Empire was definitely the double-edged sword. Much in the same way Wrath of Khan was for Star Trek.

It annoys the hell out of me when people have issues with the movies that make sense to the story. For example, "Han shot first". He's a smuggler, not a cold blooded murderer. He looks like a bigger badass killing Greedo, but it does not fit his character at all. Nowhere else in the films does he even appear to show that much disrespect towards life.

What he does in that scene is not "disrespect towards life," it's self-defense. He's got a blaster pointed at him and Greedo flat out says he's going to kill Han. You say yourself, he's a smuggler, and smugglers have to protect themselves and their cargo with lethal force. He also threatens Luke when escaping Tatooine, pulls a blaster without a second thought when under threat, and is willing to stand by and do nothing and let an old man get him out of the Death Star until Luke appeals to his greed.

Shooting Greedo establishes that Han Solo is a man not to be fucked with, and that he belongs in that "wretched hive of scum and villainy." You're not supposed to know if you like or trust him yet at that point, and indeed he's not particularly likeable until he and Luke are really in the thick of their rescue efforts on the Death Star. By the end of the film he softens and allows his moral center to dictate his actions by coming back to save Luke in the trench run. The whole point of Han's character arc in the first film is his development from a hard, selfish person into a person who allows himself to believe in other people and an ideal for the first time in probably years.

I think I'm starting to agree that Boba Fett has just coasted on his cool design and lack of dialogue. If you rewatch ROTJ, he's not that threatening, and goes out like a punk

Nope man, I don't care. I am not going to change my opinion on my love for the Prequels.

You should at least watch the TPM review for the funnies.

You should really just watch the first one. It's infinitely more entertaining than the movie.

Seriously, it's a really fun review. Even if it doesn't change your opinion, it can at least help give you a better sense of why people disagree with you and give you a laugh or two along the way.

That's exactly the problem with Boba Fett. He's shown in ESB just standing around, then he flies to Cloud City and stands and walks around. Shoots at Luke a little bit, and then flies off like a bitch. Then in RotJ he just stands around some more, and then when it comes to action he gets his ass kicked by a blind man and falls into the sand vagina.

Some of the Jedi power levels in tie-in media (e.g. clone wars and force unleashed) are ridiculous. They can beat Superboy Prime, Nathan Drake and Madara Uchiha.

Him fighting with a lightsaber is the main problem. For a character that was built up to be one of the most powerful Jedi ever and to then have him hopping around swinging around a mini lightsaber is downright offensive.
I'm not huge into star wars so I guess I'm still not following. I mean aren't all the other most powerful Jed I ever (namely Anakin) doing the same thing?

Watch the Anakin/Padmé stuff on a loop and get back to me

I'd rather watch that on a loop than the Luke/Leia treehouse scene in RotJ.

While ESB is my favorite of the six, this is a valid and very interesting perspective on it. The notion of a Star Wars series that kept the lighthearted space adventure romp aspects of the first film leads to some pretty cool ideas.

hehe

Out of 6 movies, only one of them is good. It's the only franchise I know where video games are better than most of the movies.

darth vader vs obi wan in a new hope is so fucking bad
i can't help but cringe when i see that shit
edit: i also didn't mind the prequels

If you sat me down right now and asked me to either watch the prequels or the originals, I'd pick the prequels.

I'd rather wait the modified originals than the untouched originals. There are a lot of changes for the better, including the new ROTJ celebration scene.

Dooku was cooler than Maul. Refined. Regal. Maul didn't talk... or do anything ever, actually.

Jar Jar is pretty cool, honestly.

The podracing scene is probably one of the best things this franchise has produced.

I'm more comfortable with Greedo shooting first than Han. Han never gave me the impression of being a psycho.

C3PO is Star Wars, at this point. I hope he's in 8 and 9. It's the only constant.

When I heard Lucas added the much-hated Vader "Noooooo!" to one of the most important scenes in the franchise, I thought, "Ok, this man is a genius."

I love the back half of Attack of the Clones, starting with Anakin going back to Tatooine.

...

I'm sure there are more.

I actually really like the prequels, and I loved that they made yoda a badass when he is forced to get serious.

My unpopular opinion is that it's fucking embarrassing to hear grown adults talk about Star Wars as much as they do. I liked the originals when I was a kid but I really wish the cult following would die already. We are talking about space muppets and interplanetary LARPers. There is no genius here. There are so many better stories being told in our era; including those of actual space exploration. I feel the same way about the glut of superhero movies in the past decade.

Obviously, people are entitled to like whatever they choose but if I find myself in a bar or at a friends' house and the conversation turns to Star Wars, my immediate reaction is to give up and go do something else.

Anakin had the most Force potential, but he still wasn't more powerful than Obi-Wan. Plus Yoda is like 900 years old and has literal centuries of experience. His knowledge and understanding of the Force is so extensive that the Force is his primary means of offense and defense, not a lightsaber.

The way I envisioned it was that the Emperor and Yoda were both so powerful in the Force that they no longer needed a physical weapon and simply utilized this mystical energy field for their own.

Okay, now I know you're trolling.

What the hell is this nonsense that keeps popping up? Greedo has a fucking gun pointed at Han and tells Han his plan is to kill him and take the Falcon and the reward. What Han does is unquestionable self-defense, no matter how suave he looks when he does it.

The whole point of Han's character arc in the first film is his development from a hard, selfish person into a person who allows himself to believe in other people and an ideal for the first time in probably years.
Yep, that one change (apart from being a really fucking insulting excuse for a special effect) mangles Han's entire character arc.

That's a huge development for a character in the span of a few days and one movie. It's unrealistic.

Han is easy to convert to a "good guy" because he already was one. He was threatened multiple times in the movies, and always in rough spots. He never attacks first. It doesn't fit his character. He is a smuggler and a thief. He'd much rather avoid the confrontation than attack it head on. He has a hint of sympathy in him throughout the entire thing. He wouldn't kill someone unless he had to.

I liked the originals when I was a kid but I really wish the cult following would die already.

It's not really a cult following. It's just a really popular thing that's pretty much everywhere, and has been for 25 of the 30 years it's been around.

You're right though - it's not some sort of super-deep piece of storytelling genius. Conversations about super-specific minutiae regarding characters who barely have one dimension, much less the three needed to justify all that minutiae can get pretty tiresome.

But conversations about cool looking things that go "vwoom" and "Shwomp" in movies they remembered as kids can be interesting. Depending on how they spin out, I guess.

Black and White is all some people see. What can you do

Here we go.

Episode III is better than Episode VI. FUCK EWOKS
OT Special Editions are better than the original versions.
I don't care much about Han at all
Lightsaber duels in the Prequels are better than duels in the OT
C3PO is more annoying than Jar Jar

Plinkett is one of the worst things to happen to Star Wars related discourse because it removed the need for people to form or articulate their own opinions and instead turned into "the prequels are bad (youtube link)"

Also I'd like to say that the prequel backlash was somewhat unfairly amplified by the astronomical hype for TPM, and the subsequent hyperbole pretty much poisoned the well and primed the most vocal fans to hate the other two as well. Every flaw was put under a death-star sized microscope in a way that the OT was and still mostly is never subjected to, and its been spiraling into this vortex of irrational hate within the fandom to the point where anything associated with the prequels is now considered horrible. Special effects that were great for its time? Crap now, apparently. Lightsaber fights with more acrobatic moves? Utter shit, just look how choreographed they are in these slowed down, overanalyzed gifs (ignoring the fact that every sword fight in every movie ever looks fake as hell under the same circumstances)

People really thought/wanted Disney and EA to completely ignore anything prequel related in the upcoming movies and games, like the fact that vocal fans on the internet not liking them matters in the face of an entire generation who grew up with them and spent a shit ton of money on the toys, games, tv shows and books that were spawned from the prequels. Even the worst reviewed Star Wars film (TPM) still has a 57% on RT (though I consider AoTC to be worse)

I'm not saying the prequels are good, and there are a number of valid criticisms that can be levied against them, but I personally love them because they're Star Wars and I love Star Wars. I just get tired of the 24/7 circlejerk. Label me an apologist if that's what you need to do, but I stand by all of this.

I really dislike the overall structure of star wars. Specifically, I dislike fantasy/sci fi which emphasizes a "chosen one" or "destined one" who is fated to save the universe, typically near single-handedly, and typically using innate, inborn gifts or powers.
