US-led strikes kill 35 civilians in east Syria: monitor

US-led strikes kill 35 in east Syria, just days after monitor reports highest monthly civilian death toll for coalition.

US-led coalition air raids killed at least 35 civilians, including many women and children, in an eastern Syrian town held by ISIL, according to a war monitor.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the strikes on Thursday hit a series of residential buildings in Mayadeen, a town in Deir Az Zor province.

"Among the dead are at least 26 relatives of IS fighters, many of them women and children, including Syrians and Moroccans," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of SOHR, told the AFP news agency, using a different name for ISIL.

"The other nine are Syrian civilians and include five children."

Thursday's toll brought the known deaths from two days of coalition bombing raids on Mayadeen to 50, the SOHR said, after 15 people were killed in US-led strikes on the town on Wednesday.

The Britain-based monitor tracks developments in Syria's conflicts via a network of contacts on the ground.

This week, it said a total of 225 civilians were killed in coalition air raids between April 23 and May 23 - the highest monthly civilian death toll for the coalition since it began bombing Syria on September 23, 2014.

....

On Thursday, a Pentagon investigation concluded that at least 105 civilians were killed in an air raid on an ISIL weapons cache in Mosul in March. Reports at the time said that more than 200 people had died in the strike.

....

It said it had seen civilian fatalities surge since US President Donald Trump came to power and gave greater leeway to battlefield commanders.

Airwars' figure and its claim that fatalities had risen under Trump were denied by Lieutenant General Jeffrey Harrigian, who heads US Air Forces Central Command.

Are they just fucking aiming at civilians at this point?

This is a big reason why this fucker needs to be removed from power. His bumbling is literally killing people.

Then get surprised when violence follows you back home.

I wonder if there will be any tributes, social media support groups or hastags, or the eiffel tower lighting up to some colors in memory of the lost souls here.

lol nah because brown people don't matter.

Let's see if the western news stations run a week long story giving the names and ages of everyone killed, with politicians and citizens alike arguing over the best way to stop this ever happening again. Don't forget the evangelical christians flocking to news and radio stations to let everyone know that not all Christians support the bombing of innocent middle eastern children.

I'm sure it will happen.

Aaaany day now.

We've been doing this on a pretty regular basis ever since the war in Afghanistan began. Wiping out entire civilian families in airstrikes so that we can take out a couple Jihadi fighters. Just doesn't get reported on enough.

I completely understand it's impossible to avoid some level of collateral damage, but the US has a very long history of this now and it feels like we don't take the necessary steps to avoid it all costs.

Let's be serious, Trump didn't develop the technique to go after families related to terrorists and non-combative civilians in general.

The US has been bombing civilian facilities, children's birthday parties and schools since the start of the gulf war.

It's just Trump very much approves of this while past presidents distance themselves from these (intentional) military "fuck ups".

"26 relatives of is fighters"

Trump is just doing exactly what he said he would do. This one is on everyone who voted for him.

I imagine it's semi-accepted tactic that has formed over time as US has realized that no one is going to keep them accountable for their actions. When fighting enemy like terrorism cells and groups there will be civilian casualties, but intentionally targeting civilian heavy gatherings etc. just to take out few terrorists never should be acceptable.

Assuming they specifically targeted relatives of is fighters and this wasn't an accident, then this is something new and all Trump.
Yes, the thing that is different with Trump is that he has said before that we should target families. Which is fucking disgusting and more disgusting that people voted for that.

But I very much doubt that's what they actually did here. Trump isn't ordering these strikes himself.

my thoughts exactly. It's disgusting that these deaths are never addressed in a serious manner by our politicians.

US has been doing this for decades now. Not Trump specific. One of the biggest criticisms of Obama was using drones and how lots of innocent people were killed.

Few other articles I saw about this mentioned strike was targeting ISIS fighter within this town, but heavy civilian presence was known by US forces so they knowingly bombed city with a lots of innocents just to maybe kill few ISIS fighters.

Articles mentioning this were from less known or not so reliable sites so take it with salt.

Also read something about US urging coalition to be more careful and mindful with what targets to bomb so civilian casualties wouldn't be as high. Then proceeded to make this run.

You are an idiot if you think a change in power to anyone else will change this. Hillary would order the same air strikes, obama ordered the same air strikes, any active president we elect will ok they same air strikes. I get the Trump hate, he deserves it, but in this case you are just projecting your hatred directly onto him with a false sense of "its all his fault, no one else would do this".

Sounds exactly like what we've already been doing for 15 years.

Again, not new. We have a disgusting disregard for human lives in that region.

Remember that video during the Iraq War of an American attack helicopter mowing down an innocent film crew? And then mowing down the people that showed up to rescue them? There is actual video evidence of us already purposely killing innocent civilians.

Absolutely pathetic, especially in the wake of the Manchester attack. People were already freaking out because a teen concert/arena was targeted, but imagine having to live out an existence in a war-torn region with this constant burden hovering over your heads? As others have said, I doubt anyone cares about these poor, innocent brown folk getting murdered.

And the hypocrisy and just everything about it makes me fucking sick. RIP to the victims, especially those children. One wonders what the reaction would be if these were kids in middle Murica getting wiped out by the dozens.

Continued cowardice from our military leaders. Absolutely pathetic.Someone should tell Trump that Obama was too much of a coward to use ground forces so he'll stop the airstrikes.

Business as usual then. We shrug with apathy when precision strikes coldly wipe out seemingly faceless and anonymous foreign innocents but then react with shock when retaliation hits us where we can see and feel it, unable to understand why collectively we're so hated. And all the while our leaders from Trump to May continue to curtsy in front of a Saudi absolute monarch whose nation has long been the prime exporter of Wahhabism and as Riyadh continues to be armed to the teeth to do its own attacks on Yemen with a tonne more civilian casualties.

Antipathy for human lives in the region with profit from the military industrial complex over principles. Trump certainly isn't the first, nor will he ever be the last to oversee these kind of atrocities. But he's the first guy who flat out said during the campaign that he would commit a war crime by targeting families too, so let's not be quick to file him under the "oh well it's a normal thing that US presidents do now" cabinet yet.
