Usage Based Billing approved, Canadian govt shoots it down, more developments to come

I agree the 25 GIG cap is ridiculous,i`m sure they will have better plans for that...do they know that just firing up OnLive for example, once a day, uses 8gig right there or if you buy a Digital game, like Rift for example, that it`s close to a 20 gig download? what will the Steams and the like think about this for their services up here in Canada...they will lose customers...

With multiple people on a home network, streaming and gaming alone would probably max that cap out, let alone downloads

Paying more for regression, only in Canada

Caps? In 2011? Holy shit, I'm in Poland and caps were scrapped in 2005 I think. How many Internet users in Canada are going to be affected? All of them?

All of us.

We're getting fucked hard...so hard.

the big 3 operate identically, there is no escape

So... isn't this collusion if all providers come up with the same restrictions *coincidentally* at the same time?

it is, but since they aren't organizing face to face meetings between execs to plot this stuff and instead going by a wink wink nudge nudge gentleman's agreement they aren't risking legal action

So what, is this going to be just the base-tier rate?
Do I still get to pay lots of money for increased speeds/cap in which case nothing would change?
On Cable btw

What the hell?? What I don't understand is how we already have caps and limits in place for bandwidth on Bell. How is this going to change anything?

This is fucking outrageous. What are the chances a new government can change this (after the election)? I would jump on any company that offers reasonable limits/price/ping, fuck Rogers.

This applies to all DSL companies now, not just Bell.

Before, you could just switch to Teksavvy or any other company and be free of their gouging. Now you can't.

Wow, that sucks enormously. My condolences to all Canadian GAFers.

Don't listen to those net neutrality people, they are crazy commies!

Current Net Neutrality plans have specific provisions to allow bandwidth caps.

-bell is not the only isp
-less competition
-this just makes their monopoly stronger

Your positivity is charming, if ineffectual.

Welp, my ISP is going to have to do a major remodel of their website. Especially since they also have just listed Cable internet service as unlimited as well.

So at this point, will Teksavvy cable be affected March 1st, 2011? From what I read in your post, it only sides like DSL.

iirc, Rogers is moving to UBB in July or something, I wouldn't be surprised if it happens sooner so they can take even more money from you.

My ISP offers an MLPPP internet service. I'm not really sure what that even means, but is that effected by this CRTC jackassery?

this is depressing.

I'm with videotron right now and they're upping their bandwidth caps in february. but if these types of changes end up hitting cables services later on, i'll be curious to see how this affects top tier packages.

CRTC sucks and I have yet to see them make any decision that was in favor of the general public. waste of our money.

So brutal,

I remember when my cable plan went from unlimited to 100GB a month without any form of rebate.

Oh Canada indeed

My "Extreme" service from shaw has a 100GB limit. Should be enough for me.

Is there any way to check how much of my limit I am using now?

I love how they market blazing fast download speeds.. not on 25 gig your not. Im with Rogers and it sucks downloaded DCUO and Last Remnant and i generally watch a few videos each day and yesterday just into next billing i have my 75% warning already

This has to be the greatest day for Bell, Rogers and the like in Canada. First this and now the conservative idiots in power are giving out corporate tax cuts.

God this is pathetic... why do we always have to make the same mistakes as everyone else in the world - six to ten years after everyone else has made them? Can't we learn from what's going on around us?

Maybe WIND should get into the ISP business - then the Conservatives would intervene to clean up this stupidity...

And it's only going to get worse before it gets better - with the West hell-bent for leather on voting "Right", and the Left completely shattered by the Bloc, the Greens, the NDP and the Liberals, the only hope we have for a truly "representative" government is a left-wing alliance of some kind, but most Canadians are so stupid that they actually believe Harper's bullshit about that somehow being anti-democratic (when in fact, it's the exact opposite)... God help us... (but I don't believe in God)... ah fuck...

So are grandfathered accounts like Ultra going to be affected by this? I find this most disturbing.

Bell told me in an E-mail that my unlimmited would stay that way but it would cost me 5 bucks a month more starting January...I think this will stay, this new thing only affects resellers...

If Bell screw me, I'm switching to Videotron (cable). Until I have no other choice...

I'm in the unique situation of having both at the moment (thanks to RFD I got Fibe 16 free for 4 months and I wanted to compare)

Videotron >>>>>>>>>> Bell

Since when is Canada turning into the US? This thread feels like it should be linked to the baby boomer thread.

Great. Just great.

This is SO obviously bad... how could the crtc possibly think this is good?

Many of those who hold power at the CRTC once held power at companies like Rogers, and Bell.

I don't understand how Bell thinks this is a great idea.

Obviously they will loose a good chunk of consumer that will opt for a cable internet provider.
Even the resellers like Teksavvy. I guess they will offer their consumer to swith to cable based services, also affecting Bell revenues.

I guess they are keeping stats that makes such a decision profitable. Maybe the majority of their consumers are really small bandwith users.
Having unlimited caps was really their only saving grace. They are factually the worst company in the whole Canada for client support. Their speed offerings pale in the face of competitors.

What I believe this will do is make their only competitor, Quebecor's Videotron launch a vast campaing to leach their consumer base. They have already hurt Bell a lot with the phone fiasco. I can't believe Bell is ready to suffer more :S

EDIT : I just remembered that Videotron has actually upped their Caps accross all their different plans effective in Febuary. This might actually be a strategic move to entice more consumer to jump boats.

I have a feeling that the next two decades will define us as a generation. Our kids will look back and they'll either love us or hate us for our reaction to something major and I think this is it.
Thing is, most people don't even understand what a "gigabyte" amounts to. It's just too nuanced to become a major consumer issue like, say, bank fee gouging or high interest rates.

I mean, people didn't even know what packet shaping was when that was introduced a few years ago and that is arguably worse than UBB.

Damn, you are turning into the US where former company execs are put to run agencies that regulate said industries.

So how do I cancel with Bell and find another ISP? Or do I have no choice in the end because independent ISPs will basically be forced to implement UBB?

Whatever the case, I want to cancel with Bell and get a cheaper ISP. I'm in Montreal.

if I switch to cable (Videotron) I'm fine?

Videotron is Cable and is not affected by this (for now)

Videotron also has caps. There's a way to bypass it though by paying a few $ extra.

Depends on whether or not your cable provider there is planning to introduce UBB themselves.

If they are, you're just buying yourself some time more than anything else.

if you switch to videotron you're fine for now. I don't know if they will end up getting a similar CRTC deal later on and then cut their current bandwidth caps. If you don't sign a 12 month contract, you could cancel with them at any time and not pay a fee (but your monthly bill is 10 dollars higher)

FWIW, Videotron has increased its bandwidth caps across its packages twice in the past 2 years.

are you talking about lifting caps or extending them? I know about the 12 bucks for 30 GB extension but if you know of a way to "bypass" the caps entirely, please tell!

I've had a 60GB cap forever and never hit it, even with Netflix streaming, demo downloads, etc.

Same here. 60GB cap (Rogers), and I think 40GB is the closest Ive ever come.

It's only a matter of time for this to happen everywhere else and is clearly why a DD-only future is non-existent.

We're most likely in for a repeat of the disastrous policies enacted by the food industry and bank industry then.

I myself knew very little about packet shaping(I'm only 23 years old) until I googled it and found out it was just another way of controlling traffic and I consider myself relatively good with computers and the internet in general.

We're probably screwed...
